Foul mouth
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to alyssa_vsg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It has to do with your stomach being cut, nothing you do to your mouth will really help. My surgeon said brush teeth and use mouthwash often. Just use it several times a day. That "fragrance" will improve after your insides heal--give it a few weeks. I'm 11 months out and still drink a protein shake every day. Breath is much improved from that stage. -
What Pain Meds did you get while in hospital/surgery center
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Aginn10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ten months out. In the hospital I was given a morphine drip--overnight stay. They sent me home with hydrocodone, and I took it for the entire two weeks after. I normally do not take narcotics, even for serious dental work Tylenol does the trick. However, I needed this pain killer. After the two weeks, I didn't have so much pain, but didn't feel well. At six weeks, I felt better than I had felt in YEARS!!!!! -

Poopy probs pls help !
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Amy1234's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 10 months out. My surgeon said to take stool softeners EVERY day (I take two Colace), AND take Miralax as often as needed--even daily. For extra boost when really constipated, he said take Milk of Magnesia. I've had to do all those. The first week after surgery, I had a serious plug and (I know this sounds gross but many other people have done this too) I had to use a plastic glove and actually use my finger to unplug it. TOO much strain can cause hemorrhoids or fissures. After I was allowed to eat regular food, I began eating Fiber one cereal or oatmeal daily. That helps too. I have never had another plug like that one. -
After surgery pain
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Kristin84's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry you had this experience with your doctor!!! It's so important to be able to trust him! I had pain for two weeks and took the hydrocodone I was prescribed for the entire two weeks. I hate taking narcotic pain killers, but the pain was that bad. After that, the pain subsided, but I felt miserable. By about 6 weeks, I was in tip top shape, as far as feelings are concerned. He may be right about your pain not being unusual. But, if it continues to be unbearable, go see him again. Or if possible, could you ask for a different one? I don't know how the insurance would take care of that. Or maybe see your Primary Care and tell them all about the concerns you have. Just don't suffer unnecessarily!!!! -
Shoulder pain from operative gas
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to trying4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did when I was at that stage. Walking is the best solution. Mine lasted for several days, maybe even a couple of weeks. -
Ginkgo Biloba herbal Supplements
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Sleeveforme2017's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I suggest asking your surgeon. There could be some reason that can be fixed, for example changing some other medication you may be taking, or if you have a cpap, possibly check with the doctor you see for that. -
I need some help. Diet and pain
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Crystal Manco's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love yogurt so it wasn't a problem for me. But I was told to eat Oikos Triple Zero greek yogurt, no fat, no artificial sweeteners, no sugar. The Vanilla is very yummy. I felt like I was eating ice cream. You can also add a spoonful of PB2, which is powdered peanut butter without the fat. That pain you're feeling is most likely gas. Walking will help. Try not to take anything for it. I didn't take anything and was ok after walking. But ask your surgeon or nutritionist if you need help with it. I didn't have the gas pains after a few weeks. -
I'm Miserable
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to moniwood28's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are recuperating from a major surgery! Your guts have been cut out. (sorry) It will take a little while to heal, and you'll feel better. I was required 70 protein at that time, but just did the best I could because it was hard. Just do your best and take time to heal. And contact your doctor if you continue this way. The esophagus hurting doesn't sound right to me. -
Swimming

Yes, me, too! I started water aerobics after my incisions healed. -
Not coping
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Vsgneeded's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't hesitate to take pain meds! Ask for something for the nausea. It'll get better. -
Sugar Free Popsicles etc....
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to AngieK72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolutely yes for sugar free popsicles and sugar free jello. My nutritionist didn't allow pudding and applesauce until the soft food stage, but I think I've seen others post that they could have it. Your nutritionist will give you a list of what is allowed, if they haven't already. I had my list way ahead of the surgery! Best wishes and prayers! -
Low acid coffee
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Bogie61's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Info from my nutritionist said decaf coffee, or after 3 months one cup of caffeinated coffee per day. I drink decaf all the time because regular coffee cause me to have high blood pressure. -
Don't worry--don't rush it. Go at your own pace. You'll hear this over and over again, "Everybody is different. Don't compare." You're fine!!

Post-Op Walking???
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Ms. Brightside's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have leg, feet and hip issues so walking is hard anyway. When I came home from the hospital, I walked about 5-10 minutes at a time, inside the house, several times a day. I didn't want to get very far from the house and not be able to come back. -
Why am I so tired?
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to SleevyNicks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, you've just had MAJOR surgery, so your body is having to make lots of adjustments! I was about 6 weeks before I really felt GOOD. Then I felt better than I have felt in YEARS!!!! Hang in there. -
HELP WITH PROTEIN!!!
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to ThickGirl5683's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Scrambled egg, maybe a little melted cheese on it, cottage cheese, pureed tuna, or chicken, add a little light mayo or light ranch, and a little pickle juice to make it taste like tuna or chicken salad. I too, had trouble through that time with getting tired of the same thing over and over, but it won't be forever. -
My 600 lb life
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Candigal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I do. It helps keep me on track when I see them mess up. Also, I can relate to all their feelings, even though I've never weighed that much. Thinking about "Oh, it'll be ok to do this and that, it won't hurt anything," then seeing that it DOES matter. -
In a really bad place!
Shirley Shirley Parr replied to Linda Frazier's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, honey, I'm so so very sorry for your dilemma!!! My heart breaks for you!!!! I'm not a surgeon or doctor, but I do believe that nothing is impossible. It sounds like you're already involved in counseling--that would've been my first suggestion. I also know about a group called Celebrate Recovery, which is found all over the country. It's a 12-step, Christ-based program for overcoming "hurts, hangups and habits" of all kinds. You might try to look up your local chapter by googling it. Also, whether you never lose any weight or not, making good food choices is your best bet to stay as healthy as possible. And, who knows, maybe it'll happen for you. But the main thing is to get your mind and heart right!! I pray you'll find some peace.
