Thinking About Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Natalie08 replied to MelissaRose24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! Not much more I can add to what others have mentioned. Just wanted to share my personal experience. I was sleeved 12/14/16 so I'm 3 weeks out today. Two weeks before the surgery my diet plan did not allow for any carbs (including fruit) and was mostly high Protein, low fat, zero sweets. Unfortunately I caught a cold a few days before my surgery so it was pushed out another 2 weeks. So my first advice is be especially careful as your surgery day approaches. Sick people are everywhere LOL. On the positive side, because I was on the restricted pre-surgery diet a total of 4 weeks instead of 2, it helped me drop 10 lbs before the big day. My surgery weight was 241. I'm now at 221. The surgery went well. I stayed one night in the hospital. I was on liquids the first few days then full liquids the first 2 weeks. I started pureed foods last Wednesday but find full liquids are still tolerated a little better. I had nausea at times the first few days. No vomiting to date. I have GERD occasionally depending on what I'm eating/drinking . I had a lot of gas right after surgery and up to about a week after. The GasX strips were lifesavers. No cons at all! None. I walk every day. I feel great. You get so used to gulping everything down. That's been my current biggest challenge...learning to slow down. That's about it. Best of luck with your decision! -
I read something a few days ago that might help. It helped me... "My weight loss was slower than many of those I knew, and that worried me. But what I found is that everyone loses at his own pace, and the rate of loss is not always a gauge of how much weight a patient ultimately loses." I read this in "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies". I was sleeved 12/14 and I'm noticing that while there are some things many of us share in common, everyone's experience is unique. From tolerating liquids to nausea to weight loss, we're all different. I'm down 15 since the surgery and I think WE'RE BOTH DOING AWESOME . Stay encouraged!!

Surgery is Tuesday 12/27 and I am a bit of a wreck

Good morning. Let me first say you absolutely made the right decision to unfollow that group. Shortly before my surgery (12/14) I started watching YouTube videos from people who had had the sleeve. A few videos started popping up in the playlist from people wth regrets. As curious as you may be, you can't watch them. Guard your head and your heart from any negative thoughts. What did help me was the forum of success stories in this app. I bombarded my mind with those and they gave me that extra little push I needed. I'll be praying for you that everything goes well from admission to the surgery to discharge and recovery. It can get scary if you let those doubts slide in but try your best to smother them with stories of success and joy. Hopefully that'll ease some of your worry. You're making an amazingly positive decision for yourself to get healthy. You're going to be fine! VSG: 12/14/16; HW: 285; SW: 241; CW: 236 -
Ditto AC3!!! That's incredible! It does seem that the weight loss rate varies from person to person. I can tell you not to compare your journey to others but I'm sure at times I'll be doing the same. As much as possible Celebrate your success thus far! I personally think you're doing great! Your success is motivating people like me who are at the 5 lb loss mark! Keep it up and stay positive. Anyone else this sore!

I'm Post Op Day 6 and Gas X strips have become my new best friend! Also the hospital sent me home with an incentive spirometer. The more I used that the less tightness I felt in my chest. Walking helped as well. I hope your surgeon is able to give you some answers. Hang in there in the meantime! We're all going to get through this together!
