Dr Davis talks a little about this in the book. I'm retraining my thought process on how to look at foods. I was a proteinaholic and it's not an overnight thing to let go, apparently. LOL I was eating some roasted broad beans and instantly I thought, "how much protein am i getting?" Oh goodness. I want to view it as, "I'm eating broad beans", not "I'm eating protein". I don't want to pick apart my foods anymore...just enjoy them and move on. Part of an article about the diet fads: Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale-Griffin University Prevention Research Center. He told Prevention magazine the protein craze is a fad, like low-fat in the 1980s and low-carb in the early 2000s. “All the focus on macronutrients has been a massive boondoggle—we cut fat and got fatter and sicker; we cut carbs and got fatter and sicker,” he said. “We need to stop focusing on macronutrients and instead focus on wholesome foods and healthy combinations and let the nutrients take care of themselves.” This is my goal...my diet will take care of what my body needs and I'll be free from having to worry about having certain macronutrients.

Darn, forgot my book. It's what I read during lunch. Guess I'll be doing some research then instead. Hope everyone has a happy day today!

May 15th, 2017 Sleevers Check in Here!!!

Good morning all! I ended up being too busy this past weekend to even try on my ring. I think subconsciously I don't want to or am not ready yet either. LOL THe good news is that I will eventually do it. I hope you all are doing as wonderful as I am. I think I've found part of my "calling". Yesterday as I was grocery shopping I received a text from a friend asking for diet advice. She wants to do a plant based diet. She didn't have wls either. So, I sent her what info I had. Then a few mins later I had another friend call me asking if I was willing to show her how to cook healthy meals for her family. LOL I got home to find out that my brother had posted on FB that I was going this route and the benefits of my husband has been paying off greatly and although he's initially the one that got me started, he had declared that he's on board 100%. If you knew my brother, he's the kind of guy that has 1000's of friends all over the world. So our mutual friends are calling and chiming in. I'm here for them the best I can be. Anyway, I would post more, but I really need to skidaddle out of here! Be blessed ya'll....I'll post more later. Still itching to weigh....but holding off. -
it was kind of hard getting it going in the beginning for me. I won't lie. Not because I had to have meat, because naturally I just didn't crave or cared for it, but because I cook for my whole family and wanted everyone to be on board. Now that my husband is, it's way easier to do. We are going the vegetarian route for now. My kids still have some growing to do so I'm not too worried, but I am incorporating plants in their foods and they don't know it. Lol. But one place that has been very good as far as recipes go is www.budgetbytes.com under the vegan/vegetarian meals. It's cheaper and easy recipes and so far, we love every one of them that I've made. all that to say...i eased in to it in the very beginning. That was probably about 3 weeks before surgery. Then after surgery, it was pushed to have protein protein protein. I was going with the flow...but I knew I wanted to be plant based again and thought "well, maybe at maintenance." That's just too far away for me. Someone had mentioned Dr Weiners POUND OF CURE to me and my interest started even more so. In my opinion, there's no need to wait until then and there's no need to eat animal protein to get protein and there's definitely not the need to have so much protein! hope you get to reading the book, I think it'll help clarify and confirm your path. 😊

oooh......we need more doctors like these
-
Thank you!! Lol. I will continue to do so. 😉

Following Dr Davis' way, I get my proteins through the plants I eat. I also don't believe that we need as much protein as what is pushed either (my thoughts on this has changed after reading the science of how and what our bodies need). I still feel great. I don't feel sluggish at all. I'm still gaining muscle (so is my husband who is doing body building and eating plant based). I'm impressed to hear that bloodwork of plant based eaters tend to be healthier than those who do eat meat. I do love meat, but it's not a requirement for me anymore. I've also come to realize that I don't want to pick apart my food by macro and micro nutrients anymore. If I have fish, it's fish. Not protein. That's just me...a new look at how I view food now.

I have watched that documentary as well as many others in favor of plant based. I am following a plant based diet and I'm still losing weight, etc. My husband, who is trying to gain, is following as well and is gaining muscle much easier than he was doing all that protein. We both feel better, more alert. I don't have any digestive issues anymore. I'm quite regular as well. It's nice. In fact, he decided to eat a meal that was high in fat and had some animal protein in it today for lunch. He's currently sleeping, told me he felt really sick and gross. I told him his body doesn't want that stuff anymore. He won't be eating like that again. Lol I started a thread in the Vegan/Vegetarian forum; Proteinaholic. Check it out. We're talking about what bariatric surgeon, Dr Garth Davis, has researched and found by science and evidence regarding animal protein and our diets. It's VERY interesting and just confirms to me I'm on the right path. His book is called Proteinaholic. You should check it out.

So, I am not here to turn people over. Sure, I want to encourage and want them to be open to, in my opinion and based on evidence, a more plant based diet. I will always share what I've found to be true. I will do my best to not just share my opinion but facts and by my experience as well. With that said, the first people, outside of forums, I've decided to share my newfound knowledge with were my parents. We went to lunch and I broached the subject of how well my husband and I were doing with our plant based diet, based on our experiences. Then I decided to bring up the book. Lol. OH BOY! Let's just say, I hated lunch. I did not tell them to change their diet at all. I simply said "Dr Davis shows the science and research as to how animal proteins affect our bodies. It's a good read." Instantly I get "I won't ever give up my meat." "I need protein or I feel really bad." "I don't need to read that book, I already know all about it." (I wanted to ask if my mom was a doctor who decided to spend days researching for the answers to the obesity and chronic disease in America but I kept my cool) My husband said to me, "let's not ever broach that subject with them again!" So, they're PROTEINAHOLICS. Lol

I'm gonna have to get those as well. Thanks!

Is the same as the research and evidence on grains in the article attached. I read it and went back looking for how grains affect the body nutritionally in the book and I couldn't find it. But this article spells it out pretty good too. http://ucdintegrativemedicine.com/2016/08/busting-whole-grain-myth/#gs.oNam6wo

Ah thank you! I've actually grown up. 😂
-
It's a great read. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. 😊
-
I wish I could just quote the whole book! Lol. I love all the evidence and studies. I'm especially interested in these ethnographic atlases and how the author dispels the myth about Paleo using the example about the American youth. This has to make someone think!!! (At least I'd hope so). pg 97-98 its late...I'll see about sharing it in more detail tomorrow.

Oh wow! Thank you for sharing! I'm eager to have such great results too, for being so new to plant based eating (about four weeks consistently now). Knowing that you follow a vegan diet, I'm sure you will agree with Dr Davis' book. I'll be sharing throughout the thread, you are most welcome to chime in.
-
You're so welcome hon. I hope all and believe that all will be well with you and your kidney. I'm sorry to hear of the health, but I'm equally excited to hear how much healing occurs following a plant based diet. I've learned to do my homework and not rely on others opinions and websites anymore. So, I listen with open ears but have to make educated decisions these days. Many blessings to you hon! Keep us posted on your journey.

@OutsideMatchInside says it good. I've had the same feelings/resentments with my hubby from time to time, BUT I know that I cannot hold on to what may be not even true. I love my husband and am happy he is embracing me getting smaller. You'll have to make the decision to let go, forgive and move on. So YOU can be a better person about it all.

I'll muster up the courage to try my ring. Lol i started a new thread in the vegan/vegetarian forum for the Proteinaholic book. I'll be posting a lot there in regards to it. Come chime in and follow it. 😊 Enjoy dinner with your family!!!! -
Thus Proteinaholics! He talks about Cognitive Dissonance. "This occurs when someone has such a strong prior belief that the person filters out or reinterprets all evidence contradicting the belief........Research suggests that presenting people with proof that their beliefs are incorrect doesn't change their minds. Instead, it actually reinforces their erroneous beliefs, as they work hard to defend them against fact and logic." People will need to have an open mind to start accepting that their beliefs are wrong and embrace the truths. I had to. Dr Davis had to too.

Isn't it just awesome! I can't wait to show what my bloodwork results are after doing plant based for awhile. Like you, having that validation, everything just confirms to me that I am on the right path. My husband has decided to do plant based too with me and he tells me most everyday how different and better he feels. I have a lot to talk about with my nut. lol. I'll be taking my book with me at the next appt for sure.

Good morning y'all. I'm itching to weigh myself but I won't. I love waking up and my stomach is almost flat laying down. Lol. My arms aren't so jiggly anymore, nor are my thighs. I've noticed that it must have been a phase where it gets all jiggly. Things are starting to firm up again, but I still have a good amount of fat to get rid of, so my guess is that I may or may not have a jiggly moment again. We shall see. My shoes are continually getting smaller. My feet are sliding in them. I don't want to buy any shoes though, not yet. One thing I haven't tried on, is my wedding ring. I'm almost scared too. I don't want to be disappointed if it doesn't slide on or if it does that it is super tight. I keep telling myself to get it out and try it and end up forgetting. I don't remember what weight I was when I last wore it. I was 155 lbs when I married, so...I'm probably (guessing here) that I'm about 210 maybe? Hopefully less. But anyway, if that, then I'm still 55lbs away. I can't tell any difference in my fingers though, very hard to tell since they've always been small and somewhat average, I guess. They have not ever been bony, I'm trying to say. So, with approximately 55lbs left, would you try on your wedding ring or would just wait? -
with ice and Chameleon cold brew vanilla...it's the best!!!The chocolate with the mocha Chameleon....yum. I can only imagine with the caramel would taste like with the cold brews.
