  1. It was both! The nutrients and lack of meat. Isn't it funny for all the things we've tried and we know we feel better, but we don't stick to it? I did a lot of green drinks using my nutri bullet (with the skins) and was feeling great for a time. Why I didnt stick to it, I don't know. But I know at this age I'm at now and my focus so heavy on what's going on inside of my body (rather than outward appearance) it's a lifestyle change for me. I wouldn't change it to die earlier than I have to.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

Yes, I believe I heard of that docs name. Possibly in Proteinaholic. Dr Davis talks about the Okinawans a lot, how their diet is mostly starch, which in turn is high in fiber (and that's what Americans need most). Japan's government noticed the increase in obesity and diabetes, etc and decided to do some research....well, since they started adopting a more western diet, they started getting sicker. Just for those studies alone I would hope many would think about the western diet, being so high in proteins, fats. One thing that amazes me is that heart disease starts early in life, as young as ten years old, due to diets high in animal proteins. Over time and decades, eating the same diet will ultimately lead to death early on. Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. Even Dr Atkins died of heart disease. As Dr Greger asks, "Its not where you get your protein, it's where are you getting fiber?" That fiber only comes naturally from plants.

Call me confused. Have no idea what you're talking about. Otherwise, yeah, science is always trying to be debunked with more science. What is proven fact though, I'll accept. 😊 Yay for plant based!
  4. It's what you'll put in to it. Follow all your doc orders and you should be fine. Although I didn't have wls before my 2nd pregnancy, i did have gestational diabetes and was obese, but i followed everything i had to. I gained 15lbs with medical supervision during my whole pregnancy and my baby girl was just fine and I didn't gain more than I had too. Be encouraged, you can do this and do it well and right. Remember that EVERYTHING is about the baby when you're pregnant. My doc reminded me of that several times during mine to make sure I stay on target. To compare, my first pregnancy is when I started my obesity. From a healthy weight I gained 65lbs and never took it off. My mind wasn't focused on the baby but what I wanted (and it was junk-fast food-etc). Thank God my daughter is well and healthy, BUT I wish I had better intentions and was mature enough to make everything about her when I was pregnant. So, there's a huge difference when we change our mindset from ourselves to the little precious baby growing inside. Hope this encourages you to be mindful of doing what's healthy for you and ultimately the baby. With that, you should gain a healthy pregnancy weight.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

Sounds good and yummy. I'm going to look it up! I haven't been worrying or documenting my protein levels since I went this route. I'm still building my muscle, have so much more energy, losing weight, and I know it's the best healthy diet for me. I could be getting the recommended of 45g...since I'm eating much more and I also have a variety of whole foods everyday. But I don't expect anyone to just take my words for it...but definitely research on your own and what's best for you. I'm interested to find what my blood work from yesterday shows. I'm sure my nut will say something about my protein not being 60-85g...LOL Totally not worried though. We shall see...

WebMD says: Adult men need about 56 grams a day. Adult women need about 46 grams a day USDA guidelines are the same.

I don't know what my protein levels are and I don't really care anymore. I'm eating whole foods plant based and feel great. I'm still lifting 3x a week and I'm still building muscle. I can see it and I feel stronger. My husband is body building on this same lifestyle diet and he's noticeably getting bigger. His coworkers are always commenting on it. I have a weakness for his muscular arms...LOL Plant proteins break down different than animal proteins...and are healthier. But there's no such thing as not getting enough protein through a plant based diet and not being able to retain/build muscle. Here's a video that can help explain some of it. If you navigate through the site, you'll also find a lot of science behind animal protein and plant protein as well. Enjoy! https://nutritionfacts.org/video/plant-based-bodybuilding/

Mine was a 40F as well. I have enough sense to not blame something other than myself for IF I weren't to lose weight...but I am and so that argument isn't even valid.

I'm so glad he answered back! That's awesome. You are going to enjoy his book. I'm still reading it...and it's a world of info, science and facts. We've listened too long to the western diet that is just killing us, it's time to take back our health. ENJOY your book!!!! Share with us on the Proteinaholic thread too. I'm so happy for you.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

Absolutely right! I had my ideas about the intuitive eating and I now believe I'm wrong and won't hesitate to say so. It's giving yourself permission to do the wrong things for your health knowing all along they aren't good for you.
  12. I went and gave blood work this morning. My post op appt is next Wed. I'll probably be about 210 lbs. I think I've been doing about 2 lbs a week, which is great! As long as I go down for my health, that's all that matters to me. I'm already preparing myself for my post op appt...given the fact that I went all whole foods plant based. I even have to take my Proteinaholic book with me. It's not to debate with the nut, but to give her information that I feel is best for me and my lifestyle. My nut was already on board with me going this route, but she wanted me to keep dairy in my diet...well, after reading about how dairy affects the body, I don't do cow milk (I quit giving it to my kids too) anymore. I do have some eggs, but it's sparingly...just because I like eggs. I do love my cheese, but that's also sparingly too. Maybe once every two weeks is what it'll be for me. I might just not include it after a while. So, because of my new lifestyle, I am quite regular. LOL It's great too! I don't get bloated anymore. I have a pep in my step. I'm just way more energetic than before. I was a happy gal before and I'm even more so now. It's amazing of the changes I've had. My body is thanking me for it, that's for sure. My husband has changed even better than before too. He's constantly amazed with how he's feeling and the amount of muscle he's building (better than all the animal protein and whey he was taking). Now, we're working with the kids....a little bit here and a little bit there. So far, brown rice cakes with pb and bananas, apples with pb and choc chips, and I plan to make mac n cheese (it'll have a little dairy) with carrots, butternut squash, and cauliflower hidden in it and lentil nuggets for them. My hope is that they will try them and LOVE them. I can only pray for this... N
  13. Better is good...I'm glad to hear it. You have a great day too!

So I watched HOW NOT TO DIE pbs special with Dr Michael Greger. It was informative as I thought and expected. one phrase that stuck out to me is "Heart disease is a choice" (or fill in the blank is a choice). He goes into numerous studies and facts and science behind how plants can heal the body. Pretty amazing. He also quoted a doctor who was asked why he follows a vegan diet and that doc said "I know I'm going to die, but I don't want it to be my fault." <-----that speaks loudly to me. Ooh.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

I think he cringes with his previous book. He goes along with the high protein diets in it. Unless he did a book geared towards wls and eating a Whole Foods plant based diet??? Did he? I'd totally buy it if so.
  16. Here's a nice article, science based, about where I get my proteins from, having a Whole Foods plant based diet.

      Newme17

It's my understanding that we get too much protein (in the western diet). I am eating my complex carbs and still building my muscle. I just flexed to feel it. LOL My husband has also let go of all the animal protein and he's body building and noticeably getting larger. So, the whole notion about having to have so much protein to keep muscle isn't true in my opinion. I do weights three times a week and eat my plant based diet and I'm still building.

There will always be blogs/articles out there to support whatever diet someone chooses. It's our duty to pick it apart and ask questions. Most all of them will be cherry picked for obvious reasons. The book I'm reading, the bariatric doctor emphasizes on really learning to distinguish what's in a report, and too many of them are written by journalists, not real scientists (they don't have time to blog); thus we all believe them to be true. I was given a website by a fellow BP member to look at. This website is fact/science based. It's not an opinion. There are many videos that explain in depth how the body works...how it breaks down animal proteins, plant proteins, etc. There are so many topics discussed on this website that we could all learn from. nutritionfacts.org Sure, the author/doctor of the website (he has a book too-HOW NOT TO DIE) advocates a whole foods plant based diet, but he doesn't just state it, he shows the science behind it all; all the health benefits from it, just like bariatric Dr Garth Davis in his book Proteinaholic. It's fascinating stuff.

All scientific sources are cited as well.

Just one last comment before we agree to disagree.

You just had wls, you are not getting enough food to build at this point. At best, you are preserving muscles, which is great. https://www.muscleforlife.com/build-muscle-lose-fat/

This was just the first link, I can site a ton more. This one is interesting though.

Back in 2011-2012 I lost 67 lbs in a year, I also gained about 15 lbs of muscles. I worked out 6 days a week, but up to 12 times. I eat low carb. I lifted weights 4-5 times, and we are talking like 225 deadlifts, 160 lbs squats etc, with a trainer. I also ran (training for a half marathon), biked and swam, (training for a triathlon).

From what I understand (I could be mistaken), these changes you have made are fairly recent, meaning, there is not enough time to see if you have gained muscles (and as mentioned above, highly doubtful). You are loosing fat, meaning your muscles are becoming more prominent, it doesn't mean that you have built.

Last, a great link in general, nothing to do with this is better than that.

      http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/

He has 14 articles just discussing protein, all based on research. And he talks about all different kinds. I haven't read them all, and I can't say which he favors, but it is so interesting. He is siting a lot of research under each article. I though you might enjoy it.

I love this site....nutritionfacts.org Yesterday, my brother came over stating that so many people are asking him "where do you get your protein from?" He rolled his eyes and said it was just ridiculous. I agree. It's a question that requires a carefully planned answer and this video helps. My husband told my brother to ask back, "why do you believe you don't get protein from plants?" I think that'll stump many. Anyway, enjoy! https://nutritionfacts.org/video/do-vegetarians-get-enough-protein/

You are in the book! That's so cool. I'm slowly learning that the way I am going is a personal conviction and a spiritual one for myself. Although, if I didn't think of it in those contexts, then I would still benefit GREATLY following the whole foods plant based diet. So, I believe it's for everyone.
