    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

This takes me to the Blue Zones, these people have longer life spans and way better diets than the western ones. I'm sure we can learn a lot from what they do lifestyle wise...which is where I'm going. I don't recall where, but in Proteinaholic, Dr Davis says that all he takes is a b12 supplement. He does his lab work quite regularly from what I've read/heard. Same goes for Dr Greger, just b12.

    Waiting for gastric sleeve

I cancelled two sleeve journeys to finally make the third. I'm glad I finally did it. No regrets at all.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

I was curious to who this Michael Pollan is that says "Eat Food. Not Too Much. Mostly Plants" that I see some of you have on your signatures. So, it was fascinating to read about essentially picking apart foods; just as Dr Garth Davis mentions in Proteinaholic. I don't eat by "proteins" anymore, nor any other macro or micro nutrients. It's amazing how the western diet has adopted this way of eating (myself was included) and now after being "awakened" per se, it just seems weird to label my foods. "I'm going to eat such and such protein today." -vs- "I'm going to eat some quinoa with black beans and salsa today." (Or whatever foods you eat). This is what happens when foods are/have been picked apart: Eat Foods, Not Nutrients Pollan says that where we've gone wrong is by focusing on the invisible nutrients in foods instead of on foods themselves. He calls this "nutritionism" -- an ideology that's lost track of the science on which it was based. It's good for scientists to look at why carrots are good for us, and to explore the possible benefits of, say, substance X found in a carrot. What happens next is well-meaning experts tell us we should eat more foods with substance X. But the next thing you know, the food industry is selling us a food enriched with substance X. We may not know whether substance X, when not in a carrot, is good or bad for us. And we may be so impressed with the new substance-X-filled product that we buy it and eat it -- even though it may have unhealthy ingredients, such as high-fructose corn syrup and salt. I've got to add the myths: Pollan identifies four myths behind this kind of thinking: Myth #1: Food is a delivery vehicle for nutrients. What really matters isn't broccoli but its fiber and antioxidants. If we get that right, we get our diet right. Foods kind of get in the way. Myth #2: We need experts to tell us how to eat. Nutrients are invisible and mysterious. "It is a little like religion," Pollan said. "If a powerful entity is invisible, you need a priesthood to mediate your relation with food." Myth #3: The whole point of eating is to maintain and promote bodily health. "You are either improving or ruining your health when you eat -- that is a very American idea," Pollan says. "But there are many other reasons to eat food: pleasure, social community, identity, and ritual. Health is not the only thing going on on our plates." Myth #4: There are evil foods and good foods. "At any given time there is an evil nutrient we try to drive like Satan from the food supply -- first it was saturated fats, then it was trans fat," Pollan says. "Then there is the evil nutrient's doppelganger, the blessed nutrient. If we get enough of that we, will be healthy and maybe live forever. It's funny through history how the good and bad guys keep changing." http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/news/20090323/7-rules-for-eating#1
  4. I was just looking at chili recipes myself. I have a weight watchers black bean and beef chili recipe that I've been making for years. It's really low in fats (besides the beef) and I'm going to swap out that beef and replace it with lentils instead to see how it goes. I made a sweet potato chili not too long ago as well...it was sooooo good. I'll have to find the recipe and put it on the WFPB Recipe swap.
  5. Good morning. So, I went to the doc yesterday. I have a viral infection. I was given steroids to take for five days and a nose spray. I almost instantly felt a little better by yesterday evening. Today, I am staying out from work to be sure and will go back tomorrow. I decided that I am not going to just lay around, I feel so gross doing that all the time. So, I cleaned out my kid's room yesterday (like threw away so much stuff-they haven't noticed). I even did all the laundry too. It was peaceful in a quiet house and it was nice. Today, I'm going to go Christmas shopping and try to find something I would like to have for my birthday present. I will do my best to not wear myself out though, cause I woke up at a quarter till 5 this morning. Why? Don't know!!! LOL I have to get back to the gym. I am feeling a bit jelly these days. After hurting my foot (for which I still haven't gotten x-rayed and it acts up every now and then) and then getting sick, I haven't been working out and I FEEL IT. Ugh. Probably also one of the factors of my weight staying at 200. I can't wait. Weights here I come!
  6. OMG....I want one of those! Please do let us know how it goes. How fun and what a nice present!
  7. HAPPY 39th BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! :D

Yep, today's my birthday and I'll scream it out loud for all the world to hear.  Why?  Not for birthday wishes, but because of the birthdays I had growing up weren't really celebrated too much.  When I became an adult, I would always be depressed on this day.  I had enough of it two years ago and had a revelation (thanks to my brother) and decided that from now on, I will celebrate my birthday and be happy on this day. I believe that this is the day that God has made and He and all His angels are rejoicing because I was made!!! I won't be sad anymore.  Sure, things come up, like today my four year old had the biggest epic fit over a pair of pants (and at school--the first ever) and also today, I'm missing work because I'm not feeling well, and have to go see the doctor as well.  I even weighed myself to see if I made it to onderland, but that didn't happen either.  But despite the negative stuff, I am well, TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY AND I WILL BE HAPPY.

@biginjapan thank you hon! How have you've been? Haven't heard from you in a while. I remember you took a trip though...

@Newme17 I'm doing good I guess. Haven't been so good with food (not that I'm eating badly, I've just added things that probably aren't helping me much) so weight loss has been stalled for the last month (but at least I'm not gaining). I was busy travelling and then getting ready to head back to school. Now that things are back into a routine, I hope to get back on track (that includes being here more regularly too!).

@biginjapan routine is good for the most part. It's nice to have a change here and there but when we're focused on our health, it's hard. I totally get ya. I lost about 5 or 6 lbs this past month. I don't mind, it's a loss, but circumstances in my life went haywire for a few weeks. Like you, I'm back to routine and so I expect things to be a bit better than the last month. Glad you're back!

    Bariatric Vegetarian Life

Update...under Food and Nutrition, I created a Healthy Vegan/Vegetarian Recipe Swap and Pic thread if anyone wants to share just recipes. 😊
  9. So here goes...I didn't make the kale salad with tortellini like I was going to along with this salad. Just didn't feel too well. So I prepped the poblano and sweet potato salad for my husband to finish. It's sooooo good. Definitely a keeper in my house. Here is the recipe: https://www.budgetbytes.com/2010/01/roasted-poblano-and-sweet-potato-salad/ my pic:

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

I came home from work once again. Body aches, head being "squeezed", ugh. There is a virus going around down here that mimics severe allergies/flu. I think I've got it. But since I had the time, I went to the salon and finally got a hair trim that has been needed for quite a long time. Now I'm home about to take a nap, but I'm still marching on with making sure I get a nice meal on today. I'll prep the veggies and have my husband finish it when he gets home. Today will be a kale salad with tortellini (again!!!...I loved it) and a roasted sweet potato and poblano salad as well. Why two salads? well, my poblano peppers are going to go bad if I don't hurry up and use them. Here are my recipes is anyone is interested. https://www.budgetbytes.com/2010/01/roasted-poblano-and-sweet-potato-salad/ https://www.budgetbytes.com/2014/01/kale-tortellini-cranberry-salad/ Also, do ya'll think we should utilize a vegan/vegetarian thread for recipes only? Or here is okay? Is there one? I haven't checked. UPDATE: I created a HEALTHY Vegan/Vegetarian Recipe Swap and Pics thread....come join in!
  12. I'm going to have to follow suit then. These vitamins are expensive and it's really expensive not using them at all.

I get almost all my vegan/vegetarian recipes from budgetbytes.com very easy and cheaper too. There are a few of us in the Proteinaholic thread that share recipe links and pics if you'd like to check those out as well.

    Vegetarian diet anyone?

Totally doable. There are many of us here doing a more plant based diet. I don't worry about protein and carbs, but I do have an egg and some cheese occasionally. I'm mostly doing vegan though. There are a few threads under Food and Nutrition:Vegetarian and Vegan Eating if you'd like to join and discuss.
  16. Same here.... BP: could this be remedied please? Thanks!
  17. Ugh...nevermind. Feeling oh so sick even with the liquid vitamins this morning! When will it ever stop? YUCK.
  18. LOL Totally not what I would think of...really, and technically, someone who is works there and wandering around in the gym. HA! I see it all the time.

    Coffee question???

When I was told no coffee, that meant no caffeine. So I had decaf pre and post. I ordered decaf iced coffee from Starbucks a few times pre-op as well. I started my caffeinated coffee about three weeks post.

    Crackers and chips

Thanks hon. The sea salt ones are my favorite. Hope you enjoy them too.
  21. So I switched vitamins again. I still have a good few weeks left of the bariatric advantage pills. They're starting to make me feel very very nauseous. I bought a liquid vitamin this time. It doesn't taste too bad and seems to be fine for now. It seems as if the longer I am out, the less I am able to tolerate the vitamins. I've had to switch a few times. I'm almost ready to just go to a gummy. The only thing that's different with a sleeve is that the stomach is smaller. So, I don't know why we have to have such a huge amount of vitamins. I eat a pretty good variety of plants, so I'm not worried of nutrition. Maybe earlier on when we couldn't eat much of anything I suppose. I'm wondering if I'm getting too much vitamins????
  22. @Berry78 my head didn't implode but I surely wanted to say something about that! Lol. I'm glad you spoke up. @Rainbow_Warrior I didn't even notice #5 was missing! Lol

    3 days post-op and starving!!

Eeee....27 days! That's a long liquid phase post op. Mine was a week. In any case, the longer you stick to it, the easier it should get.
  24. Lol. Had a good chuckle cause that's how it usually is, them wandering.
