    Denial about my weight

I need to take pictures and look at them too. I was still questioning why or when/what made the changes in my life to get to where I'm at today. LIke you, it's very hard to hear morbidly obese. I had the same thought process about it. My husband told me today, "that's the past, this is now. Stop comparing yourself to the 'used to be'." I'm basically going to have to create a whole new me, not just the physical, but the mental too.

    Denial about my weight

@@Newme17 - I had this feeling for a long time too. I was the jock in my family, my brother was not. I was on multiple sports teams throughout my teenage years, but even in my 20s I was active with dance lessons, hiking, and other activities. That said, the weight came on and off throughout the years, but it wasn't until I went to see a new doctor, that he referred to me as "obese," that once I got over that shock, I had to come to terms with the fact that I was, in fact, obese. Even here in Japan, I've felt "fit fat" because living here kind of forces you to be. I don't have a car, which is pretty normal, as you really don't need one in the city. Which means I walk a lot. On a normal workday, I can easily hit my 10,000 steps a day without trying. There aren't a lot of escalators or elevators here, so people constantly take the stairs. You know that when you realise everyone, from small children to the super elderly, are taking the stairs, all the time (usually 4-8 staircases sometimes) that they are doing something right here (Japan has one of the lowest obesity rates in the world).Japan is DEFINITELY doing something right, along with many other countries who do the same thing. The US is a joke when it comes to exercise and diets, in general. Thankfully there are many people who won't adapt to the ways of the west. I'm tired of it and will be another one who won't adapt. Like you, when the doc first said "obese" I was like "say, what!?" That's for fat people, not me. Then it was made worse when the chart said "morbidly obese". No freaking way! Very hard to hear those terms for an individual who doesn't feel like she is. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. Finally I see someone with about the same numbers and body shape!!! Although I haven't had my surgery yet, it's comforting to see what it could be like. It's encouraging. Thank you for sharing and congrats!!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

If you didn't have the pizza and wings, I did it for you.! Lol I had pizza and wings. Probably shouldn't air out my dinner here, but I did. I'm trying to not have a food funeral either, but here's my excuse, it was my daughter's birthday party. Ugh. Excuses...got to get over these too. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Denial about my weight

I know exactly what you mean. I tell everyone I have reverse anorexia. I think I'm less fat than I really am.I have always thought this way. It's upsetting when I finally see a full body photo or see myself in a full length mirror. I've always had the "fit girl stuck in a fat body" thinking. I wonder? those of you who feel this way as well, were you once fit and trim too? Athletic? Healthy for a long period of time before gaining the weight? This was me. Maybe we don't associate ourselves with obesity as we would have if it's been years of being obese? Our minds can't connect until we see the reality? Guess this is something I should talk/share about in my psych eval, huh?I have always been a big guy, tall and big. I was pretty lean in my early years of college. I worked out all the time and ran. Even though I was eating like crap and drinking all the time, I think the lifting and running helped keep me lean. Like I said before, now I am just big and soft. I have like no muscle mass at all. I think the issue is, you get used to seeing yourself. You get so used to it that you don't realize how big you are. So you were active and was able to eat what you want because of increased metabolism. Then the activity slows down and the eating doesn't. It catches up and turns in to obesity. Yeah, I agree that we don't realize it. Main thing now is that we move forward and take control, as you are doing. Congratulations for doing this. I just had my initial consultation this past Thursday. We'll be about the same journey, depending on prerequisites and how we pay, etc. I'm going through insurance. Keep us posted please. I'd love to hear your journey. And congrats again for being honest with yourself. You will do well. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I know exactly what you mean. Surprising Reality of WLS

Someone posted their nutritionist told them to eat more and the weight started to fall off again. I gained weight not eating enough (crazy but true). My doc keeps telling me to eat more. When I did, felt like I was a stuffed turkey, but I was losing (also working out pretty hard too). Problem was It was hard to keep eating more for me, but it works!! But this is my experience and I'm still pre surgery. Not sure how it'll be after surgery, but if I can't eat much after, than I'm in my element, at least. Getting sleeved in June

http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ehs/news/2011/brominated-battle-in-sodas Some companies removed it. But there are still sodas with it and the chemical isn't banned here in the US as it is in other countries. It's called Brominated Vegetable Oil patented as flame retardant. Stuff is used in plastics. Blah Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Getting sleeved in June

What got me to stop cold turkey was when I learned of the flame retardant chemicals in some sodas. Grossed me out thinking I was drinking that stuff. Haven't had any since. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Getting sleeved in June

I was reading up on skin, different pigmentations, sun damaged or not, smoker or not, elasticity/collagen, etc all plays a role in how each body will respond. Whether it bounces back or not, etc. my surgeon told me it all really depends on how much excess weight (or how far your skin stretched) of how much skin you'll have left, but usually there's always something. I'm in the same arena as you. I'm doing weights. Not really caring about my diet too much now as I tend to watch it the best I can anyway. Closer to the pre op, I'll work on not drinking anything while eating. I think that'll be one of the hardest things to do for me. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    WHAT'S THE SECRET?!

IF is awesome, especially when adding weight training. Definitely mixing up your normal routine in both diet and exercise is how to get your body to respond differently and get out of a stall. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. I use Vega One as well. Your food allergies are crazy. Wow! Thankfully there are options and a plant based one at that. You haven't had your surgery yet either? When is yours or about what month? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Feb 8th. When's yours? Sent from my QTAIR7 using the BariatricPal App I'm not set yet actually. Just getting started here. Probably going to be in Mar/April timeframe. Yours is soon!
  18. I think I posted my question in the wrong forum, so here it is....maybe you wonderful vets can help me out??? Hi, I'm new here. Gathering a lot of info as to what to expect to getting sleeved. I have my first appointment of all appointments on Jan 19, 2017. I have yet to see or hear of anyone having a plant based diet after the surgery. I currently take juice Plus supplements in replace of Vitamins, etc. I'm also trying to change my diet to more plant based as well. Are veggies and fruits not tolerable? Is anyone getting their Protein intake from plant sources, i.e. Beans, etc? Sorry for the numerous questions. Just want to make sure it's doable. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. My initial consult was great. Surgeon was super sweet, nice, and funny. He asked me all kinds of questions about my health. I've been at the mercy of God for not developing anything other than obesity and heartburn. So, the surgeon wants an endoscopy done which I was happy to say I just had one done last Nov. My current insurance requirements are 4 visits with a nutritionist and 1 behavioral health exam. That's it! Then a 2 week pre-op and ya'll know the rest....First NUT appt, next Wed. Yay!

  21. Sitting here, 12 mins before my appt starts, kind of nervous actually. It'll be my first appt of many....been in the making for way too long. Feeling guilty for scarfing down Chik-fil-A before coming too. Sure hope he doesn't ask what I ate for lunch. On another note, my hubby had a dream a week ago that we were discussing possibilities of getting skin removal done.

    Throw out the Scale

I don't weigh myself much and have stayed away from it for the sake of my mind. Numbers shouldn't define us. Sure, if it shows some high numbers, then we need to make a decision to do something...but when we're all different body types and heights, all have different body masses, muscles, etc....the numbers shouldn't (in my personal opinion) be the thing we follow. You lost weight, you feel and look fabulous, and that's what counts. Congratulations!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. I'm a woman and I love lifting heavy. I am doing it now to build more muscle before my surgery. Intermittent fasting also helps. Not sure it works with WLS, but I think I read someone doing IF and weights too. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App The only way to build muscle requires the intake of carbohydrates with the Protein. And also try carb cycling. One day higher one day lower. it plays with the insulin levels on your blood and helps promote muscle growth. Agreed

  25. Took a nice break; back to read some info; I have my first consult/appt next week on the 19th. FInally coming around. On the downside, my insurance company is requiring me to do all the weight management part again, because there wasn't a CONSECUTIVE documented doctor visits. Ugh. I went from March 2016 to Dec 2016; and only Sept was documented in between. But I'm trying to stay positive. It shall pass.

The whole paperwork thing sucks, but on the positive side, apart from the paperwork, you are making progress where it really counts.
