I struggled just post op too. I used a medicine cup and measured out 1 ounce or 30mls and sipped on that. I would sip constantly all day. I was told to get 1 ounce in every 15 minutes. Using the medicine cup made it easier. I sipped on water, protein shakes, protein water, and broth. It helped if the fluids were at room temperature or warm. I couldn't tolerate cold for about a month. Good luck to you!

lingering cough
ColleenErin1974 replied to Sexycubita's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is a tea called throat coat that may help. I use it for cough and sore throat too. It has an herb called slippery elm in it that coats and it tastes like licorice. Good luck with your surgery. -
Experiencing Panic Over Bypass Surgery
ColleenErin1974 replied to zallykatz16's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I was in a similar situation for my surgery. I checked in at 6am and was the first surgery of the day. You will do fine. Pre op they keep you busy with questions, consent forms, IV insertion and so on. I was in for 2 nights 3 days and had no visitors. I was far from home too. I was too uncomfortable to worry about entertaining people. It's important for you to get up and walk as much as possible. It helps immensely with the gas pain. You'll be tired and sleep in between walking. Just focus on yourself and you'll do great. It's normal to be nervous. Keep us posted how you do! Good luck! -
Doctors office insisting on requirements my insurance company does not need
ColleenErin1974 replied to LacyMay's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! My insurance only required a 3 month medically supervised diet. I didn't have to get prior approval, but my surgeon required quite a few tests and lab work. Those were for getting medical and psychological clearance for the surgery. To make sure it was safe for me. Good luck on your journey! -
I had RNY and had gas issues for about 7-10 days. Remember you just had major surgery only 3 days ago. You will have pain getting up from your incisions because they cut through muscle and moving aggravates that. Your best bet is to walk, walk, walk. That eases pain and moves gas around and out quicker. Let yourself heal and don't over exert yourself to soon. You got this! You will feel better every day.

What is the average amount of carbs to have post op?
ColleenErin1974 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm out 6 weeks and was just wondering if anybody knows how many carbs per day is ok? And sugars too. Thanks! -
Troubles stopping smoking
ColleenErin1974 replied to BecomingMeAgain's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Almost all surgeons require you to be tobacco free, sometimes up to 6 months pre op. Nicotine hinders healing and causes stomach ulcers after WLS. I quit in September 2016 and my surgery was 6/21/17. I quit cold turkey and have not touched one since, but I understand where you are coming from. It's hard to break. My surgeon had me do a nicotine urine test 2 days prior to surgery and if it was positive my surgery would have been cancelled. Some surgeons do a test at the beginning of your journey and prior to surgery to be safe. Good luck quitting! It's for the best! You can do this! -
Purchasing protein from bariatric websites
ColleenErin1974 replied to KayCee1976's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love the unjury chicken soup protein mix. I make it with chicken broth not water. Unjury unflavored is great too. You can add it to almost anything to boost protein. Unjury offers a starter pack that is well worth the price. Good luck in your search! -
Surgery is tomorrow!...
ColleenErin1974 replied to Nmelo723's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck tomorrow! I'm almost a month out from my RNY. When I got to the hospital I had to register and then go to the outpatient surgery floor. I checked in there and waited to go back into pre op. Once in there I had to strip naked, put on the lovely hospital gown, and get on the gurney to wait. A nurse came in and started my IV and I was given saline and an antibiotic. Anesthesia came in and had me sign consent and explained what they were to do. Then, a few minutes later I was wheeled into the OR, moved on the table, and went to sleep [emoji42]. Afterward I was groggy for a few hours, but slowly woke up and started my walking! Walk as soon as you can and keep [emoji1435] walking it really helps the gas! Good luck tomorrow! You'll do fabulous! Keep us posted! -
Nicotine test first?
ColleenErin1974 replied to lala777o1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do one 2 days before surgery, not in the beginning. On here, you'll learn every surgeon is different in their approach to WLS. Good luck! [emoji256] -
To be successful on this journey, you need to listen to your doctor and no one else's. Every doctor is different for many different reasons. I stopped my ginger ale 6 months prior to surgery. I don't miss it. I was told to stop at my information seminar, so I did. I agree that you need to read up on diet soda and aspartame. Aspartame is a poison and can cause numerous illnesses. Your best bet is to listen to your doc and quit now. Withdrawal sucks, but better now, then post op when you already feel yucky. Remember this is a lifestyle change for the better. This is the time to let go of some bad habits. Good luck!

Hello and welcome! You will meet lots of people that know how you feel and are on the same journey. It's great you have your husbands support too. This is a total lifestyle change we have to make. Feel free to message me if I can help you out. I'm 3 weeks post op. I'll help with what I can! -
Almost there!
ColleenErin1974 replied to Losing in NWAR's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After surgery I have no appetite or cravings. I am only on puréeds right now and eat because I have to. It's not bad at all. You'll have to work on the food obsession, try to realize when you are really hungry and when it's just head hunger. It has been easier so far for me because I just don't feel hungry. You'll get through this! Keep your eye on the prize! [emoji4] -
Almost there!
ColleenErin1974 replied to Losing in NWAR's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree totally that this is in no way the easy way out. This will be a hard journey, but you can do it. I'm 3 weeks post op myself and never thought I would be where I am now. It seemed to take forever! Just listen to your doctor and follow their program to the T. Every surgeon is different, as you will find out on here, but do what your doc tells you. Good luck and keep us posted! [emoji16] -
Decided to do it, what can I do first?
ColleenErin1974 replied to toby585's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations on your first step in what will be a life changing journey for you! I'm only a few weeks post op gastric bypass and see changes happening already. A few things I did to prep myself after I went to my seminar were: Stopped all carbonated beverages because they are not allowed after surgery. Started drinking 64 ounces of water a day. Slowly started a walking routine that I got up to 2 miles a day. Stopped all caffeinated beverages because they can hinder healing. Totally cut out sweets. Started seeing my primary doctor to start supervised weight loss with monthly visits. Most insurances require 3, 6, or 12 month supervised diets to see if you can comply and lose some weight. And quit smoking. Every program is different for WLS, so always check with your doctor if doing these things are ok for you. Good luck to you and keep us posted! -
Surgery Buddies Summer 2017

I'm down 20 pounds as of today. I'm limited on exercise because I have a broken foot, so I'm losing slower than I'd like. I'm looking to join a gym near me with a pool so I can get some exercise that way. I'm following my docs orders too. -
Pre-Operation Gastric Bypass
ColleenErin1974 replied to Stacy0430's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op here. It is not easy to get in your water and protein every day, but you have to be vigilant about it. What I do is keep a Premier protein shake and a bottle of water in front of me all the time. I set a timer on my phone for every 15 minutes. I have a 1 ounce shot glass I fill every 15 minutes alternating water and shake. I fill the glass and sip constantly for 15 minutes. It works, but it gets tedious. My vitamins are chewable and I take them 2-3 times a day. They are easy to get down and I just wait 5 minutes after having them to sip again. You'll get in your own groove once you get used to it. It's hard, but feasible. I'm now at 2 ounces an hour and it's becoming easier every day. Good luck to you! Let me know how you are doing! Feel free to pm me! -
Wish me luck

You'll do great. I'm a little over 2 weeks post op and feel good. The first 48 hours were very painful for me. The best thing for it was getting up and walking. Walk as much as you can. You won't want to, but it's the best thing for you. Walk, walk, walk! That's my best advice! Good luck! Keep us posted. -

Surgery Buddies Summer 2017
ColleenErin1974 replied to mjfx2's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Things are going good. I still have pain in my left side, but my doctor said that's normal. I had gas pain for about 8 days and walking is what helped that the most. I'm on puréed foods now and so far no issues. I'm limited on my diet per my doctor. It's a small list of purées, but it's not too bad. I can't have mashed potatoes, puddings, thick soups, certain veggies, and certain fruits. I'm allowed to do cardio now, but no weight lifting yet. I'm limited on my cardio due to a broken foot, so I'm going to check out a gym with aquatic classes for my cardio. -
Well, I saw my surgeon today for pre op. All my labs and such were great. I signed all my consents and am a little nervous because according to my surgeon, I had to sign for my gastric bypass AND gastric sleeve. He said because I've had a couple previous surgeries there could be scaring that may make the bypass to hard to do, so he said if he can't do the bypass he will do the sleeve in its place. UGH! Now I'm worrying that I won't get my bypass. My luck lately has sucked. I went on a trip with my daughters while they were visiting me. On our way to a tour of Austin, Texas, I didn't see a dip in the sidewalk and fell. Long story short, I broke my right foot on 6/8/17. I saw an orthopedic doctor and was told I will most likely have to have surgery to fix it. SMH! I really hope that I can get my bypass surgery and not a sleeve. I've had severe GERD for years and don't want it to get worse. My surgery is Wednesday and I could use some good luck and prayers for the bypass to be a go. Thanks for hearing me out. I'll appreciate any and all good vibes! HW-268 CW-246 GW-130
