I had the 4th visit with my surgeon on Monday. After having a sleep study, moderate obstructive sleep apnea was diagnosed, along with hypertension. I have a JUST under 40 BMI, so now I officially qualify. I've completed my required support group meetings, gotten pulmonary clearance, and scheduled the remaining required appointments throughout this month (nutritionist, psych eval, cardiologist, endoscopy) he says that at my may appointment, all of my records will be submitted to insurance for approval, and I'll receive a tentative surgery date. I think this is really happening [emoji4]

Ugh....6 months?!?!
charlies.angel replied to Detroit_25's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I need 7 months, and I'm 4 months in. I feel like it's dragging and it's making me crazy. My surgeon said he'd give me a tentative date at my may appointment. I'm looking at surgery late may or early June, after approval. -
Single incision versus multiple incisions

I was curious about incisions. How many, where they are etc. that's one thing I haven't gone over with the dr at this point yet -

I had to sit on the rug in my kindergarteners classroom last week for a story. I felt like a fool when it was time to try and stand up. [emoji30] -
My husband knows and is very supportive, and I told my mom (she had lap band about 6 years ago) and nobody else. I don't need nor want to explain my personal decision to anyone else.

Borderline BMI
charlies.angel replied to tracybshaw's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in the same boat. Im just slightly under BMI for insurance approval without comorbidities. I'm 4'10", so I carry this extra weight everywhere. My "morbidly obese" weight is not the same as someone who is 5'5" or taller. We are all fighting the same fight. I had my sleep apnea test about a week ago and will get my results this Thursday. I too am depending on that diagnosis to qualify. Good luck to you! [emoji4] -

How about a gym membership? It's never too soon to get started, even just walking on the treadmill indoors while it's freezing out. How about window shopping for all the fabulous clothes you'll be wearing this summer? [emoji4] -

Which surgeon did you choose?
charlies.angel replied to snogueda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm using Dr. Lee at South Shore Bariatrics, Long Island NY. He and the hospital are local to me, I loved his personality and outlook when I met him initially at his seminar. He also has years of bariatric surgery experience -
My husband knows, my mom (who had lap band 6 years ago) and 1 close friend. I'm a stay at home mom, so I don't have to worry about the workplace dilemma, and my husband works from home, so he'll be here to support me. As far as for me, It's Nobody else's business.

Does everyone have to do endoscopy
charlies.angel replied to britt_will_getsleeved17's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My insurance does not require it, but my surgeons office requires it for ALL bariatric surgery patients. -
I'm still ore op- but my mom had the lap band years ago, and soup is usually her "go to" meal at restaurants. Sorry. Pre- op. [emoji23]

Anyone getting sleeve but have 60lbs or less to loose?
charlies.angel replied to Nel71's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 4'10" 180. Very similar to you. Your story is similar to mine- I've been a yo yo for years. I take off a little and put more back on. I have to severely restrict my calories to lose- then I'm starving. When go back to Eating normal portions I gain. -
Tomorrow night is my sleep study, followed by my 3rd visit to the surgeon Monday, and my first nutrition consult Tuesday. I've already got my pulmonary clearance, and 3 required bariatric support group meetings under my belt. [emoji4] I'm almost halfway there and finally feeling like I'm moving in the right direction!

Anyone with a low BMI (30-33) had sleeve surgery or will be?
charlies.angel replied to SD123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
PS- everyone's journey is is different. I joined this group for support, never even thinking that I would be frowned upon bc of my lower than 40 BMI. I really hope that is not the case. -

charlies.angel replied to SD123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have struggled with my weight for over 25 years. At 4'10" with a BMI of 37, I have about 80 pounds to lose and keep off to be healthy. I could probably lose half of it, but I'd have to starve myself. It just doesn't come off. Then it creeps back on. I can not maintain the goal weight. That's where this surgery will really help me long term, with maintenance. This is my last resort after years of yo yo dieting with poor results. -
Insurance approval questions...
charlies.angel posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all... I am new to the group. I'm almost 3 months into my pre-op, with a sleep study scheduled for next week. I have been stressing over my insurance approval. My BMI is 37, and my surgeon says I'll need my sleep study to show sleep apnea to qualify. He seemed confident about that. Although high blood pressure and diabetes run rampant in my family, I don't have either of these. I do have a history of yo-yo weight loss, depression & asthma, and previous high blood pressure. Has anyone had difficulty getting approved with a lower than 40 BMI? Or just the opposite, gotten approved no problem? I have Anthem BC/BS. [emoji4] -

I have anthem BC/BS in NY. I believe that's what my surgeon is saying. Both he and my pulmonologist believe that I have sleep apnea and that it's what will get me approved. I was just wondering if there's anyone who was in the same boat.
