  1. It really depends on your job and what you do. I have a desk job and I took the maximum of what my doctor would give me which was 3 weeks. Although I didn't Ned three weeks I took it. There was another lady in our office with the same surgery she only took a week. Every job offers FMLA where you can receive up to 12 weeks of leave per year, if you don't want your job to know you medical reason of your leave have your doctor to write the diagnosis codes only on your FMLA paperwork and not write it out (gastric sleeve). Diet coke

My surgeon told me soda stretches your stomach. So ultimately those of you who still consume theses sodas diet or not, your stretching your sleeve. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  3. I had severe nausea with dry heaves in the hospital with the medication they gave me for nausea! It was the worst thing!!! I could not drink without the feeling of being sick. When I got home I was still nauseous with meds, but when I would feel nauseous I would put a cold towel on my forehead or neck. I would sometimes sleep with it on my forehead. To get my fluids in I had to find different options that would still make me nauseous but not severely nauseous. Prior to surgery I would only drink room temp water, after I could only drink very ice cold water. Hot chicken broth was a life saver. I stuck with the things I could get down so I would not get dehydrated. After week 2 I was ok. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Post surgery questions

I also have a desk job. You can ultimately take a week and be fine. I took 3 weeks just because I could. That was the max for my doctor to keep me out of work. I went to the gym the same week of surgery but that was only to walk very slowly on the treadmill... walking makes the pain so much better. I love ZUMBA but did not resume until 5/6 weeks out. My Dr. Said I could start light strengthening at 3 weeks. You don't want to do anything that could damage your healing stomach. You will not be able to lift him after surgery, the length of time I'm unsure, but if I had to guesstimate I'd say 3 weeks. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

BCBS of Alabama and terrible PCP experience

I had BCBS AL...they denied me the first time, and I had to do an additional 7 months of visits with my NUT and Dr. Not the surgeon. You have to submit everything according to the policy or you will be denied as well. If your BMI has not been consistently over 40 for the last 3 years, u will fall under a different category which means u have two options. As well as having one of the following high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes that must be noted in your medical records. Options; 1. You see a Dr. Not your surgeon consecutively for 7 months with 30 days in between each visit. 1st visit is consult, then ur 6 monthly visits. Your 1st visit and last visit must be 180 days from each other. Your doctor MUST note your weight loss goals, nutrition, exercise, etc... 2. You can see a Nutritionist that you see monthly that will document the same thing, weight, exercise, etc... or physically join weight watchers and go monthly, u can not do it online only. You will need 3 documented visits from the doctor as well in reference to your weight loss. You have to show bcbs al that you have tried to loose weight. All your weight loss documentation has to be from the same DR. I was initially denied because I had seen one doctor in Jan for a weight loss program, didn't get any documentation from Dr. In Feb, then had remaining documentation up until July from another Dr. Although I had proof that I was on a weight loss program my BMI went under 35, 34 to be exact they denied me as well for that which made it difficult to loose weight without falling under a 35 BMI. The second time I submitted my information I did not submit my low BMI. In reference to your weight/ BMI history you will not need a letter, you will need actual Dr. Notes or visits, that has the date u went to the Dr. Your weight/BMI, U DON'T have to have every visit submitted, but as many as you can for that year. 1st time it took the insurance co. 30 days to deny, 2nd time a week to approve. You may also want to confirm with your Dr. Office if they offer online access for you to retrieve your medical records. Many offices are heading in that direction as my doctor office does & I'm from northern AL. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Drain Tube

I also had a drain tube. I had a total of 4 incisions and my drainage incision was in the center of my upper stomach. I had surgery on a Monday, they took the tube out the next day before discharge. It didn't hurt coming out, but felt very gross when pulled out. As others have said it will depend on your surgeon if they utilize it and for how long. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  8. I would definitely go with the sleeve vs. bypass. Just my personal opinion. I traveled after 2 weeks of my surgery approved by my surgeon. If your flight is more than two hours just be sure to get up and walk around even if it's just to the restroom. It prevents blood clotting. 1st flight after 2 weeks, 2nd flight after 4 weeks, then had a 10 hr flight 6 weeks out. 5.5 weeks out you will be on soft foods, you can have chicken and fish as your meats. Normal foods that you generally eat now comes at almost 3 months. Your NUT should give u the different phases and when and what you can eat. ALCOHOL is a definite NO, my surgeon told me never, but my NUT told me 1 year after surgery. You will know when your full, some foods for me I'm full after a few bites, others I'm not, for me if I'm eating too much I will feel like I will vomit and can't take another bite. Ultimately you don't have any adverse effects such as having to find a bathroom. I hope this information will help you! Good Luck! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Vitamins

I bought those same vitamins... they are very difficult to take, the smell is horrible. When I do finally get them down I have to make sure Ive eaten something or not mix with other supplements or I'll vomit. I definitely have to find an alternative for the multi vitamins. The other products that I've used through Bariatric Pal have been great. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Weak

If your Dr. Released you to return to work FMLA will not benefit you. If your doctor extends your return date you will be covered under FMLA. You have up to 12 weeks in a year. I work in HR and I returned to work in 3 weeks. I understand you having to make a living, so I'm assuming you don't have any type of short term disability to supplement your income while your out. If your job does not offer it, Aflac has good STD policies for any future surgeries you may have. If your only option is that you have to work, make sure your taking ur protein shakes, your liquids, and vitamins. Don't miss a meal at all! Keep something with you to sip on throughout the day. I pray things work out for you! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    1st Night of my journey

Wow! Every surgery is definitely different. I had 3 incisions plus an incision for drainage so total of 4. I stayed in the hospital for 1 day. Surgery was @ 9 am, could not have anything to drink until after my swallow test at 1:00 am. I was able to sleep on my back with no problem, I walked every two hours which helped tremendously with the gas. The pre-op diet based on what my surgeon described to me is to help you loose weight prior to surgery to help shrink the liver. They want the liver small as possible as they have to bypass to get to your stomach & they don't want to cause injury to the liver. My pre-op diet did not consist of just liquids but a low carb diet. Way to go on the liquids! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Food....

I initially was sent home with the acid reflux in which my Dr. Wants me to stay on for 3 months as well as the Nausea meds I was sent home with. I didn't start my vitamins until week 2. All my vitamins were liquids / chewable in which I purchased through this app BariatricPal. I was sleeved 12/12/16 I do eat the chicken and fish, but was told I couldn't eat shrimp. I've tried a little pork since being in Europe now there is a ton of it. With the sleeve times you may not feel hungry but you should be intaking something food or water at least every 2 hours, if drinking plain water is a huge task try Mio or crystal light that helped me in the beginning. Nausea I lived with since surgery day including dry heaves (absolute worst thing ever). When I would nauseous I would either take my meds or immediately put a cold towel on my neck or forehead and it would go away. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Gas

My doctor said NO soda diet or not. Said soda stretches your stomach. I stuck with the gas x strips consistently and it worked for me. It will definitely get better with time. I also used a daily Prilosec pill prescribed by the doctor which is suppose to help the acids worked wonders. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?!

You mentioned your calorie, water, protein intake but what is your average meal ? To gain 7 pounds in 3 weeks time your consistently doing something for the weight gain. I've come to realize that this sleeve is a tool to HELP the process not the KEY. Exercising would definitely help your weight loss and improve your sleep. Unfortunately just eating right can cause you to maintain and not loose. Eat right, exercise, get rest they go hand and hand to weight loss. List a daily menu that you eat and possibly we could help see what the culprit is. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Tyenol / cold meds?

I was sick coming out of surgery! It was awful!! My Dr. Told me I could take Tylenol and NyQuil. I took The NyQuil but sparingly because of the alcohol in it which was my personal preference. Although I couldn't take both cold meds with my pain meds I was given. I had to alternate. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    When to start liquid diet?...

My pre-op diet was not liquid. Mine was low carb. The reason is to have u loose weight prior to ur surgery to help shrink your liver. I drank Protein shakes, veggies, fish, and chicken lost 6 pounds the first week and 3 the second. You start liquids two weeks prior, think will be on liquids 2 to 3 weeks after. If your Dr. Advises 1 week then go by his instructions. Good Luck Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  18. Bottom line is everyone's body makeup is different and for the most part you may have different results based on what your NUT or surgeon has given you. I wish it was the same by doing everything right for everyone and end up with the same results. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    So depressed

My weight came off slow as well. If your looking for a quick or drastic change quickly it will not happen. I was discouraged at first, but a friend told me it's better ur loosing the way you so that u don't have loose skin. I'm in a phase now I can work out so it helps. You mentioned FRUIT are you mixing fruit in your clear liquid stage? I was on clear liquid 1st week, full liquid 2 week, and puréed by the 3rd. Everyone is different, so u want to follow the instructions of ur NUT and Dr. But if ur mixing fruit that has sugar which could be a culprit. Try unjury Protein powder...omg it's soooo good with no after taste. chocolate and strawberry is my fav. You Can purchase from amazon, the actual Unjury site. Also check with ur local hospital wellness center. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
