What is the best research site for bariatric surgery?
fordtmacrae replied to Mountaln Gal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just bought the Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies book. It explains all the various surgeries, side effects, recipes. I'm about half way through it. It was recommended to me. Good luck. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Premier shakes come in a pack of four 11oz. premixed shakes at Walmart for under $7.00. Each shake has 30 grams of Protein and low carbs. I ordered a pack but haven't tried them yet. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Good luck to you on your adventure. Where did you have your surgery done? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Needing@2@lose I have Kaiser and Medicare and I'm covered for Gastric Bypass surgery only. I'm not covered for any other WLS and only one covered WLS in my lifetime. I believe the choice of surgery being limited to gastric bypass may be the choice Kaiser SW Washington has chosen, but not sure about that. It's what I wanted anyway. Good luck. Congrats! Keep us posted how it goes.

Rolo626 Each Kaiser region seems to be different which doesn't really make sense. Oregon/Washington seem to be the longest time frame from looking through the most recent posts. Got to do what they require or you don't move on through the process to surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

C pap machine, sleep Apnea
fordtmacrae replied to northstar9148's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like the same thing I tried called nasal pillows. I was looking for the least restrictive mask and straps. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I was diagnosed in 2009 and tried to adjust to the CPAP. I tried every mask they had and was just to claustrophobic. I ended up having the best success with what they called at the time " nose pillows." They go in your nose slightly and have minimal head straps. Honestly, I never did adjust to the machine and it has sat in the closet all this time. I was diagnosed with CHF and told to get on the machine or risk a stroke or heart attack. I'm giving it another try with hopefully a newer sensitive machine. My appt is later this month. I completely understand the suffocating feeling. There was a good article that I googled that talked about how to get adjusted slowly without the air going at first to get use to the mask of your choice. There are so many different masks, but the only slight success I had was with the nose pillows. Good luck. Hang in there best you can. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Three month anniversary today
fordtmacrae replied to LittleBill's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
LittleBill my Dad had a pretty complete shop and taught me. The one major tool I wanted was a lathe. I couldn't convince him. I made my captain's bed, nightstand, built in large tv cabinet with drawer on bottom and shelves on top with tiny drawers, various bookshelves, double buffet with top and bottom, all out of pine. The only hardwood I did was out of Walnut. It was a real nice drop down secretary desk. It was my pride and joy. I did quite a bit of refinishing furniture too. Fond memories. Thanks for bringing back great memories. -

Looking great! I use to build my own furniture which wasn't a class they'd even let girls take in high school. Great progress! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
It sounds like you may be approved easier with Kaiser Medicare than with what you currently have. Is that a possibility? I've got Kaiser and my comorbid conditions are controlled but I was approved right away. I've also got Medicare. Good luck. Hang in there. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Mkurtz52 I don't know why Kaiser would want you to wait until you have Medicare insurance. I would call them and specifically ask them why they said that. I was told that the whole process from the 12 week class to surgery takes 9-12 months for the average person. I'm assuming since you've had the 12 week class that you could possibly have surgery in 6-9 months. Just a guess. I would definitely call them though.

Littlebill that was great! Have a super day.

Meds slowing down weight loss?

I'll check about the tumeric capsules. Thank you for the info. I too didn't use to believe in herbal meds, do now. -
Meds slowing down weight loss?
fordtmacrae replied to MissCat1970's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm insulin dependent and also have bad neuropathy in my feet. I can't take the prescription meds your on because I'm allergic to them. A pharmacist suggested I take Vitamin B-12 and Alpha Lipoic Acid. It took two months to kick in, but has reduced the neuropathy by 50%. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Are you finding the information worthwhile? Did they give you a diet with calorie limits and suggested weight loss for each person? I was wondering if this was an official weekly weigh in that was going to be part of the overall weight loss suggested/required for surgery? I'm doing it by webinar so I was told we would be required to keep a food and weight journal. Thanks for any info.

The class you mention is the one I start by webinar on January 23rd. That was listed as Step 1 on my three page letter from the program. Did you receive a letter from the WLS dept? It gives an outline of the steps we must go through and in which order leading to surgery. Maybe they're folks who've been through this Kaiser Region service area program and had surgery that can add more info to the process. I'm new to this NW Portland Service area and the program. I'm happy to chat with anybody more about it. Have a good day and good luck.

I'm signed up for the January 23rd webinar class also. I'm in the Portland service area. I live about an hour north of PDX. I'm anxious to get the program going. My doctor said it takes between 9-12 months to get to surgery if I follow the program. Hopefully by this time next year I'll have had surgery. I'll see you at the webinar!
