MarcyD What kind of treatment have you been going through for your kidneys? How long have you been diabetic? I am a diabetic of 16 years. I don't have any kidney involvment yet. My mother was on peritoneal dialysis before she passed away. She was a long term diabetic and have had several MI's and was blind. My grandmother, grandfather, uncle, great grandmother and great great grandmother on my mother's side of the family were all diabetics. Unfortunately my husband's father is a diabetic also and I do worry about my daughter. Best of luck. Myra

PB'ing liquids in the car/too big of a sip???
Mvpo8961 replied to Sunta's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sunta I have read but never personally experienced that cold fluids can make the pouch spasm. I drink room temperature fluids but it is due to dental discomfort. Myra -
Congrats Sheri and welcome to LBT. There are a lot of smart folks here. Hope everything goes smoothly for you. Myra

havfaith44 tell us a little more about yourself. Where do you live. Do you have insurance are are you going to self pay. Really the insurance vs selfpay is probably the most important as far as getting started. You generally have many more hoops to jump through for insurance approval. Congrats on your decision to change your life. Myra

In FW - Best way to get a loan if you are self-pay..
Mvpo8961 replied to dallasgal's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I initially used Capital One and was approved for 15,000. That was doing the banding in SCOR. However my insurance approved me so I didn't have to selfpay. But I recently reapplied with Capital One for dental procedures. Both times approval was a snap. The first time I did an online app late a night and got an approval email the next morning. For the dental work I called them and was given approval over the phone. So they are really easy to work with. http://www.capitalonehealthcarefinance.com/ I know a lot of the plastic surgeons in the DFW area use them. You might also consider CareCredit. This is another loan center. The interest rate for me was better than Capital One. You are given a credit card with a loan limit and you can use it at any provider that accepts it. You can even use if for your pets. http://www.carecredit.com/ Here is a link to their website. They were even easier and faster than Capital One. But there were only two docs listed under weight loss as providers in the DFW area and I am not familiar with either of them so I don't know if they do banding or not. You could call their office and check. Myra -
Congratulations. Do you have a date yet? The time will fly by and it will be here before you know. Best wishes on a smooth surgery and speedy recovery. Myra

It took a full week before I could stomach anything but skim milk and chocolate carnation instant Breakfast. Everything else just made me so queasy that I just couldn't stand myself. The taste of anything else was just awful. My doc told me if you get diarrhea take Imodium or if you get constipated take a laxative. But there is OTC meds for either condition and don't hesitate to use them. Emotionally I think everybody pretty much goes through the rollercoaster. I know for several weeks afterwards I was really questioning what had I done to myself. Sounds like your on the normal track. M

Paladin tell 3loves that I and DH will be having our dental work in the good ole US of A. Thank goodness I was able to work out the financial end of it. Marcy I hear ya about the diabetes and oral health. I have been diabetic for the past 16 years. Plus I smoked until almost three years ago. Bad I know. But if I was good all the time I wouldn't have needed the band and new teeth. DrewsLou I agree the photo is a KNOCKOUT!!!!!!!! LindaV snow skiing? I didn't think snow accumulated more than an inch at a time!! At least here in Dallas we ICE SKI (usually in our cars). jcbydesign I am so sorry that this happened to you. I hope you are able to straighten it out. I shred everything that I can that has my name, address or any other personal info on. But there are so many ways for people to get your personal info nowadays. I remember when we used to have our SSN imprinted on our personal checks and never thought twice about it. I cringe whenever I think of all the checks that I have sent to the landfill with that info on them. This was before we started using a shredder. I always wonder what would happen if they were to come to the top of the landfill pile and start blowing away. cherg I hear ya about the junk food. Right now I am living mostly on lukewarm coffee, M & Ms and Pasta. Anything soft that I don't have to chew. I also have to have food and drink at room temperature. I can't have anything cold or hot right now. So I kinda have a reprieve on the junk food until I get my dental work done in a couple of weeks. Then it will be chew chew chew on good for me food. Which I am REALLY looking forward to. Who knew you could get sick of junk food?

kim2bhealthy I don't remember a time in my life when I didn't make four or more trips to the dentist a year. This started when I was a preteen. I have gone so much I often fall ASLEEP in the dentist chair!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to say I do try hard to practice good oral hygiene. The ironic thing is I have a brother who NEVER went to the dentist for TWENTY years. That is not an exaggeration. His teeth aren't any worse than mine. Man that really aggravates me. LOL everyone. Girl you better go cheer that team on and show off that new figure.:clap2: Myra PS I had my underwear fall off in the hospital parking lot one day as I was walking in. Naturally half of the patient room windows faced that parking lot. Makes me giggle thinking about it. M -

Paladin tell 3loves her prayer must be working. Here is the long story. The first week of September we did a home equity loan, paid a bunch of stuff off and this let me get financing for doing my dental work. Financing came through on September 14th. So I was scheduled October 11 to have all my teeth pulled, and the titanium rods implanted. I had my impressions made for my dentures on Friday 15th of September. While I was getting my denture impression made I was talking to the dentist about my husband's teeth. I routinely make his appointments for cleaning but I don't go with him. Apparently he hasn't been listening to the dentist. Because when I ask about a root canal that he has needed for three years I got the complete 411. His teeth are completely wearing away. He has a total mismatch of his back teeth to his front teeth. So his teeth were in far WORSE shape than mine. He needed immediate work done. But since they weren't hurting him (yet) he just kind of ignored it. Well now he is to have 24 teeth crowned and four veneers done. Every single tooth has to have work. To the tune of over 30,000 dollars. And it can't be put off because he is grinding his teeth to nubbins almost. So I put a hold on my dental surgery so we could focus on getting his done. Well it turns out my dentist really didn't want me to get dentures but agreed to it only because I was being hard headed about it. So now I am having all crowns but four which will be veneers also. The bottom teeth in the front for my husband and I will be veneers. My dentist says these teeth are small and could break off it she were to do crowns on them. So she likes to do veneers. So between us we will have 39 crowns and 8 veneers placed. Along with a few root canals. He does his temporary work on October 9th and they will all be done at once. The dentist has set aside that entire day for him with no other patients. Mine will be done on Wednesday, October 11th and I will have all my temporary work done at one time also. Three weeks later we will go back to have the permanent work done. After that I will have a bridge made for my lower right side that doesn't have any teeth at this time. Whew I hope that will finish everything for us. My daughter had her wisdom teeth out and had braces put on this past spring. So that will make us about 60,000 worth of dental work for the three of us this year. One good thing is I will be able to use it on our taxes. The other is we will all have nice straight white teeth and look really really good. I have never had white teeth so this will really be something new for me. Tell 3loves I surely understand the pain and discomfort from her dental work and I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers like I always do. I hope things turn around for her quickly. Love to ya'll. Myra

Congrats on the newest family member Marci. They look like a wonderful couple. HHHHMMMMM grandbabies are good too I hear!!!!!!!!! Well I have to let all my fellow May bandsters in on a not so secret secret. I have had a two headed problem being overweight and really BAD teeth. When I started this journey I was going to selfpay and have my band. Then things worked out where my insurance would cover the band. But my lapband surgeon and my oral facial surgeon wanted me to wait for a few months after lapbanding to proceed with dental work. I was hoping to get my teeth fixed at the same time so I could start with both surgeries out of the way. But it didn't work out like that. Now you have to understand I only have 19 teeth, five of which are crowned, most ofthe others have had cavities and such. I think I had five of my original teeth that never had a problem of some type. I also had a very extreme overbite and wore braces when a teen. When I was five I had a traumatic injury that required me to take the antibiotic that stained children's teeth. While this is not structurally significant I don't remember a time in my life having a pretty smile or white teeth. In addition I grew up in the country and we had well water so I didn't have flouridated water growing up. All this combined to make my teeth very bad as an adult. But I do practice good oral hygiene. Both of my parents, as well as I, had horrible gum disease. On the bottom right side of my mouth I don't have ANY TEETH. So the few teeth I have on the bottom left that I have undergo a lot of stress from chewing as I only have one place to chew food. So the gums and teeth in that spot are always painful. So all this has combined to make actual eating a difficult task for me. I have now gotten to the point I can only eat SOFT foods as I can't chew well anymore. Soft food is high calorie food. Somedays I can't chew anything and just drink coffee and melt cholocate M&M's. (Boy that's sad isn't it). Needless to say I have had very little weight loss due to the dental situation. But TODAY I have finally been able to get things arranged to where I will have ALL my remaining teeth crowned and then a partial will be made for my right lower quadrant. When my bite has been corrected I will have an implantable bridge in that quadrant. But I will have to have a bone graft there first. I guess my point in sharing this is being able to look forward to cleaning out the closet with ya'll and watching my ticker actually move down. I finally just took my ticker off my signature because I found it embarassing that it wasn't moving. I am very happy for everybody and can't wait to fully join ya'll on our journey. Myra

Can't "stomach" protein drinks any longer
Mvpo8961 replied to NowNotSoBigGuy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Skim Milk with Carnation Instant Breakfast and a couple of teaspoons of Hershey's chocolate powder if you like a chocolater? tasting drink. 1 cup skim milk has 8 - 9 gm Protein 1 serving carnation instant breakfast has 5 gm protein. Some folks use the Lo Carb Hood Dairy product to decrease the carbs. Carnation Instant Breakfast also has a lo carb product. But since you are only five days post op you really shouldn't worry about calories at this point. Healing and adequate hydration and nutrition are most important. Myra -
Does she work at the facility where your banding is being done? Could she perhaps know more about the surgeon and his track record? That would be my first thought is that perhaps she knows something about some of the inner workings of the facility or doc that the general public wouldn't know. I know as a healthcare provider with a husband that is a healthcare provider we have the inside 411 on the docs we want to use. IF she is that adamant about you not having but is reluctant to say why I would really have to wonder. M
