kt_199 started following NEWBIE:Scared to Get Lapband, Question About Hiccups?, Newly banded and scared.... and and 7 others
-
Hiccup is air trapped that your body is trying to expel. You need to learn how to make yourself burp to clear the hiccup. Not sure how to explain, but it works, once you learn the trick. You will learn much after your swelling is completely gone and you have been adjusted at least two times. That is when the fun starts.
-
More than likely, you are still swollen. At the swelling goes down, your liquids will pass more easily.

Wheetsin, The point is not to pick a fight with you, apparently you have a clue. However, my point was that someone that is 150 lbs overweight carries a significant more Water than someone who is 5 lbs over. Hence the ability to see a 30 lbs drop in 30 days. Plus, the reason most of us are in this situation is that we beinge on sugar and salt more than a person who eats healthy. Just common sense, not a dig at my brothers and sisters.

vinesqueen, Contrary to what you want to think, if you are human, the basic rule I stated applies to you. Drop the denial. I only ate 200 calories today and gained 3 pounds and I don't know why doesn't cut it here. Also, I said the 3500 is an approximate. We all vary slightly, but the theory is sound. Calories in - calories out always determines whether we gain/maintain/loose. Protein doesn't change this either, btw.

The 2 day fast prior to surgery will help a lot with reducing your hunger for a while. Once your body heals, the hunger will mostly be emotional/psychological. Contrary to the love affair on the this board with protein, protein doesn't cure this. Gut check time. The band is a tool, not a cure. Make sure you come to terms with that before the procedure.

Please don't get caught up in number comparisons. When very fat people come off sugar and salt, you can see dramatic initial loss on the scale. Remeber, 1lb of fat is approx 3500 calories. If you eat 1000 per day and your body burns 1500 per day, then it takes 7 days to loose 1 lb. Period. Anything else is Water. Just plug in your numbers to this equation: 3500 / (Calories in - calories out) = days to loose 1 lb I think is absurd when people brag about loosing 10 lbs in 1 week. For sure, it isn't fat they are loosing.

More profitable for the docs and more success for the patients. Trust me, insurance company are ALL about the almighty dollar and when the success rate for the band improves, they will cover it. Too many people get the band, then continue to drink milkshakes and sweet tea all day and don't see the results of other procedures.

Newly Banded And Not Sure I Did The Right Thing!!!!!!

Kristen, I know this is hard, but you can't watch the scale too closely now. Your pre-op diet should have eliminated carbs and sodium (assuming you fasted for at least two days). This will cause you to loose a ton of Water, not fat. Remember that 1 lb of fat = 3500 calories. So, if your body burn 1500 calories per day and you eat 1000, then it will take you 7 days to loose 1 lb of fat. Given that, your initial loss was mostly water. Once you ate some regular food, your body quickly retained the water it previously lost. So, the advise above is good. Calm down. Reset your mind that of a marathon and not a sprint. Also, if you are less than 4 weeks post-op you are taking a fairly big risk by starting exercise. You MUST let your body heal completely if you want to reduce the risk of complication. -
http://products.apexfitness.com/cgi-bin/apexfitness.cgi/results_cat?mv_session_id=ESHPh4gk&mv_pc=8&mv_arg=FIX&cat=Fix by Protein Bar, I'm assuming you are looking for a snack/meal replacement with 20 - 25g of protein. Appex makes some very good products, especially the "Cookies." Very healthly and quite tasty. Also, if you like(d) Snickers, go to a local GNC and try the "Nitro-Tech" bar. They have a flavor that is as close to snickers as I've seen. You MUST get them fresh because they don't sit well on the self and will start to liquify. Best "health" bar out there when its fresh. They usually sell in singles so you can try a couple of flavors. I also like the Worldwide Sports Pure Protein Bar in the Stawberry flavor

I strongly suggest that you just accept that your band will NOT allow bread, Pasta, and sugar. DO NOT even attempt to prove me wrong. If you even try any of these, you will be sick for days! As for me, since my swelling is gone, I have no problems with anything specific. I'm limited by the speed at which I swallow and the volume per swallow. It takes me 3 times longer to eat 1/3 the food, which is EXACTLY why I got the band.

Just a Curious Newbie going to start my journey

To me, the best thing you can do now is to make SURE, that you understand why you are fat. Sure, you eat too much and don't exercise enough (so say we all), but you must go deeper. The band is only a tool and not the solution. If you don't get to a deep and truthful understanding of your current situation, then the band will be ineffective in the long term. I'm not saying you need a ton of counseling, but you do need some considerable time in self-examination. If your issues are emotional, then you may indeed need professional help. If it is a lack of education, then get education. If it is a lack of support, then I suggest you look at OA and/or Weight Watchers. If it is a lack of desire, then take a hard look at where your health is heading. Once you come to terms with who you are and why you are in this situation, then you can determine whether the band is a good fit for you. As an example, some get banded thinking that the band will make them unable to eat bad things or to somehow fill an emotional void. NOT true. Sure, it works well with the volume of food you can eat at one time, but doesn't stop you from pounding a large milkshake or munching on chocolate all day. With the band, YOU will still be responsible for wise choices. -
Above is all good advise on the food part. Also, please consider that food is only one part of solving the hunger problem. Your daughter is struggling with many issues (some of which she is probably not even aware of). Please make sure that she is getting real live support that is dealing with all the non-food issues. As an example from me, I used food to self-medicate so I could cope with my emotional issues and stress. I used my body's reaction to the over production of insulin as a narcotic substitute that gave me several hours of deep calm. No amount of broth or sugar free water is going to replace that.

Just a quick warning about the board. There are MANY very sincere people here with great insight and experience. However, there are a few who seems to have a chicken little view of things. You really have to view things over time to be able to discern the difference, so be patient and try to get a good feel for those that really want to help and those that are looking for playmates to their pity party. Here is my opinion: The band works for some and not others. If your expectation is that the band is a tool as part of a larger solution, then you have a GREAT chance of success. However, if you are looking for a fix that will allow long term weight loss with no change of the emotional and psychological reasons for your weight gain, than your chance of success is MUCH lower. Also, be very sure that you have a decent basic health and fitness education. If you are not aware that eating a large Big Mac value meal (with an extra Big Mac just to be sure) is a bad thing, then you are not ready for the band. Keep in mind, even the band doesn't prohibit me from grazing all day on really bad things. For me, the band is the best tool for me to control my portion size and assist me in making better choices for the limited space I have.
