Welcome to the May club... I'm scheduled for May 18th -
Anyone cut their hair dramatically after weight loss?
AK_Bookworm replied to thisisthenewme's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I love short hair on me but with all the weight gain my face is too round for short hair right now so as soon as I feel my face is slim enough (my sx is in May) I am probably cutting it off again. The first time I did it I wasn't sure how it would look as was afraid since I had hair just past my shoulders all my life but I looked and felt amazing with short hair and knew regardless it would grow back if I didn't like it -
Annoyed With Payroll
AK_Bookworm replied to MeltsIntoWonder's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know at jobs I've had you can't willingly take leave without pay if you have PTO so I'm not surprised they said you can't. That being said it's frustrating and I'd be irritated too -
HIV+ does anyone take Triumeq

Yayyyyyyy for good news!!! So happy you're able to continue on this journey and come out of your depression. -
My friend went alone and had a great experience... I'll be going alone in May and I am not nervous at all from her experience and others I've read on here and instagram and watched on YouTube

I am I crazy for considering surgery
AK_Bookworm replied to Apple1's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
That's exciting that you're getting it done. I'll be getting mine done in Mexico on May 18th. I'm glad you feel comfortable with your decision and made it based off what's best for you! -
I was originally going with LTVSG... after watching this video I decided to look into ASlimmerme. Although my experience with LTVSG wasn't bad (communication seemed to be slow but I don't think it was anybody's fault) I was very happy after my conversation with staff at ASlimmerme and decided to go with them instead. I am scheduled for May so I can't say how they are yet but I am super excited and relaxed and ready to go. I know Dr. Maytorena would have been a good choice also and don't doubt his abilities I just think the communication I have had with the coordinator and finance department at ASlimmerme has eased my mind more and made me comfortable versus the communication I had with the coordinator at LTVSG.

My new PCP is not too keen on surgery in Mexico
AK_Bookworm replied to kinipela24's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
My insurance covers surgery also, however my portion (after all the hoops) will likely be more than going to Mexico. I'm scheduled for VSG in Mexico on May 18th. While yes there are a ton of "doctors" in Mexico that do horrible things to people there are some amazing, talented doctors there as well. There are doctors who do horrible things to patients in the US as well as other countries. If you do your research (which you should be doing regardless of where you're getting surgery) and make sure the doctor has proper credentials, training, and experience the likely hood of being a horror story is slim to none. If this is a PCP you really want to keep do what you can to get him/her on board but if you won't miss the care then look for a PCP that will support you. They will mainly be doing blood work for you to monitor that and if you have any other health issues which are things they should be doing before the surgery anyway. I am going to a practice who has a doctor who does fills on banded patients even if they had surgery out of the country so I know they are open to sleeved patients who had surgery out of the US. The only person who knows whether going to Mexico is right for you or doing it here through insurance is you and you'll eventually make the best decision with a lot of support from this forum, research, and discussions with your PCP. -
I'm 5'1" and the only short inseam that works for me is the Torrid EXTRA short... they are just perfect but of course super expensive. I'm going to have to look into these other options because I'm tired of walking holes in the bottom of my pants

Anyone kept their procedure a secret?
AK_Bookworm replied to FatboyNYC's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've told my grandma (she has been the most supportive because she had gastric 15+ years ago and has always wanted me to have wls but I was stuck in the mindset that it was the "easy" way out. Only after doing lots of research and looking at forums/instagram pages did I realize how ignorant I was), my mom (she will be watch my youngest daughter while I'm in Mexico), my oldest daughter, my sisters (who really don't care and aren't very supportive), my best friend (she had it done in Sept), my dad, and another friend knows. I may be telling my supervisor after just in case the "is she on drugs" convo comes up she already knows the reason and won't suspect anything else (she's super supportive so I know it won't be an issue telling her and I know she won't tell anybody else unlike my last supervisor). Other than that I don't plan on telling anybody else... I have an insta for surgery but haven't posted because I'm not sure I want to put myself out there like that and someone find the page that knows me but on the other hand the wls community is super supportive and I'd love to meet new friends so I'm still debating on what to do. -
I'm so excited yesterday I paid my deposit and booked my tickets to get surgery done in Mexico. In 12 weeks I will be on the losers bench (May 18th). I wish I could go sooner (because 3 months is soooooo long lol) but because of work and not knowing how long it will take to get my passport when I go tomorrow (not going to pay to expedite it) I decided May was best. I had so much anxiety picking flights/airlines and I'm praying seats near me don't fill up. I don't want to cause anyone and discomfort sitting next to me. I travel often for work but it's on smaller planes around Alaska often with open seating so I don't get as anxious. I'm trying not to focus on that much and it's working (until the day I have to fly out) because I am so excited right now about surgery and hoping the next couple of months go fast!!! Whew feels good to be excited and be able to tell people who get it!

@Karmalexia I'm going with Aslimmerme Clinic. They have two different packages I chose the basic one which is $2799. I'll also pay for my meds when there for $150. The premium package includes the meds and a few other things for $3499. So far Anette and Lizette have been amazing to work with and are very responsive to my questions -
Also another thing to note is if you don't get preauthorization with some insurances they will not reimburse you after so that's something to look into and consider when making your decision

Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
AK_Bookworm replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was dead set on SADI-S... I like the idea of restriction and malabsorption and the high chance of losing all of my excess weight and low chance of regain... however my nerves got the best of me and I decided to go with VSG instead because I'm going to Mexico and all of the what if's came to mind. While I'm worried I won't lose enough to get close to my goal weight I've looked at girls who are at my starting weight and height and see where they are now and I would be comfortable if I got there and didn't meet my goal... plus if I have some fat left over I can get my BBL lol... the $2,000 price difference also helped me make up my mind and I'm ok with the change now and super excited for VSG. Looking for people who are likely to get surgery in Spring 2017!

May 16 here... 3 1/2 months feels so far away but I know it will come fast -
I've been a single mom since 2007. I started dating when my daughter was 3 and got pregnant again only to end up a single mom with two kids. I haven't dated since and have been so focused on working to take care of them that I gained weight. I'm having VSG in May and I'm ready to gain my confidence back but I am honestly comfortable and ok with being single and not sure I want to date. Focus on adjusting to your new life and getting a solid routine down for you and your son. Dating will fall into your life and routine when the time is right but if you try and force it into your life relationships won't work because you won't be ready. Congratulations on weight loss... you're a lot stronger than you may realize right now and once you take the time for you and get yourself in a good place mentally, physically, and emotionally ... everything else will fall into place Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I am opting to go to Mexico instead of using my insurance... I think it will end up being cheaper in the end for me. I am going with Dr. Maytorena at Long Term VSG, the place that shavonne337 posted the screen shot from (they recently changed their name to Long Term WLS). My friend went to him in September after I told her about him when I started my research into Mexico surgeons. She has nothing but good things to say about her experience so I'm confident in my choice. Her dad went to Dr. Ponce and also had a great experience. My surgery will cost $3,4999 (not including tickets and the cost of take home meds) so total for surgery, passport card (since I don't have a passport yet), flights, and take home meds I'm looking at $4,073 total. I originally had my goal weight set to the high end of a normal BMI for my height... I was comfortable that I would be able to hit it but recently changed the procedure I will be getting (originally was going to do SADI-S but decided I'm more comfortable with VSG with my surgeon being in Mexico) and decided it was best to change my GW because it's very possible I won't meet that with VSG. So I've upped it to 150 and though I will be considered overweight based off my BMI I'm confident I can get to my goal (maybe too confident lol) and realize that my original goal weight may not look right on me anyway (which was also a deciding factor into switching to VSG). Ideally I'd love to be 140-145 but I'm going to set my GW at 150 and hit it and then go from there. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
