Hello from the loser's bench... sleeved in Mexico [emoji322][emoji322]
AK_Bookworm replied to AK_Bookworm's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Thank you! I did go through them and had a great experience! -
Switching my protein shake was the best thing... I started losing weight more and my surgeon said my liver looked great. I would switch it up if you can and see if that helps.

A guy sleeved the day before me had to come back over from the recovery house because he was in so much pain and they ended up taking him back again. I am so incredibly grateful for a smooth recovery. -

Surgery in Mexico
AK_Bookworm replied to jensnewbody's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I leave tomorrow for surgery in Tijuana. There are many people who have had surgery there and have had good experiences. My suggestion would be to do a search and read the threads about it. That's a good place to start! -
Thank you!!!

I wasn't losing much on my preop diet either and got discouraged until I changed my mindset. I eventually cut out the premier protein shakes and switched to protein powder and almond milk and seem to be losing more than when I was using the premier shakes. In the beginning I broke down crying because my weight loss was nowhere near what most others were and had to remind myself what the ultimate goal is with that and that's simply to shrink my liver. Surgery is on Thursday so I just hope my liver is good enough to get it done and that's my major stressor right now but otherwise I feel good about what I'm doing with this preop and my progress. Hang in there and remember the ultimate goal.

Don't go in expecting to lose a lot... based off what everyone said they lost I expected to lose at least 15-20lbs and it really is coming off really slow during preop... I have been on it for 18 days (I decided to start a week and a half earlier to give myself time to adjust before I really had to start) and I've only lost 10.8lbs. I was very sad at first and felt like something was wrong with me because I wasn't losing nearly as much as what others had I've changed my mindset and I'm going with the flow but I have to admit I'm worried that with my little loss my liver won't be small enough. Just focus on sticking to it and remember the goal is to shrink your liver not to lose weight (look at the weight loss as a bonus).

Pre Op Liquid Diet Starting Today
AK_Bookworm replied to travelergirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree keep yourself busy... the first 2-3 days are the hardest but once you get through those I felt better. I've been on it for a week and half and have struggled some but after changing the protein shakes I was originally using and finding a broth that works for me (the sodium was making me feel so sick) I am doing better. I also noticed when I am at work with nothing to really do I think I about food and hunger more than if I am busy. -
T - 7 Days until Surgery Day!

Yayyyyyy how exciting!!! I'm scheduled for May 18th too -
I got my passport for my surgery next week in Feb. it only took 3 weeks routine processing so you definitely want to get in this week and do it as expedited. Also not sure of your weight and what airline you are flying but I looked at seatguru.com when I picked my seats and the airline for my flights next week. Look into first class too if you can afford it since the seats are bigger. I will definitely spill over some but I am hoping to have an understanding person next to me and I will do everything I can to make them comfortable even if that means I'm uncomfortable

Anyone have extra Gas X strips they want to sell? Everyone seems to be out of stock
AK_Bookworm replied to Pistolera's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Do you have a Target near you? I got mine there... you may be able to order from Target online. -
I'm glad I read this... I haven't lost much on the liquid diet and have been worried my liver wouldn't shrink enough because of my lack of loss. The first week I only lost 5lbs and was extremely disappointed and stressed but reading this helps.

Liquid Pre-Op Diet... What interval for shakes?
AK_Bookworm posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
(Posted in the wrong surgery preop group I'm having the sleeve) Less than 2 weeks from surgery and my official preop diet started Wednesday however I started a week and a half earlier to adjust because I knew I would need time. I did great during the time that I was doing it that I wasn't required to but now that I'm actually required to be on it I'm struggling with wanting food from already being on it so long. I do a shake every 3 hours for a total of 5 shakes a day. I get in a lot of water but don't do any broth because the sodium in the broth makes me feel nauseous and shaky. I'm wondering what others do/did as far as the timing between shakes. I'm thinking of switching to a shake every two hours with my last one being at 5pm but I'm worried I won't make it to bedtime if my last one is at 5 (I typically go to bed around 9-10:30 depending on how much me time I want after the kids go to bed). With the 3 hour intervals I currently do in between shakes I'm starving in between and that's when I want to eat something (and have over the last few days though it was only a bite or two of meat I still I want to be compliant to not run into any issues during surgery). I'm just trying to find ways to help make this as easy as possible and not be so hungry in between shakes that I eat foods I'm not supposed to right now. Also that the fact that I haven't lost as much weight as I expected on the liquid diet has been hard but I remind myself that this isn't for weight loss and if I do have any it's a bonus so that's helping a lot but I'm still not completely there with being ok with the progress that I shouldn't even expect in the first place since the goal with this is to shrink my liver not lose weight. It's really showing me how much of a mental thing this will be also not just physical. -

Liquid Pre-Op Diet... What interval for shakes?
AK_Bookworm replied to AK_Bookworm's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've tried it and the sodium is still too much although doesn't make me feel as bad... I might need to try a few brands and maybe bone broth and see if it's better. -
Liquid Pre-Op Diet... What interval for shakes?
AK_Bookworm replied to AK_Bookworm's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor (Mexico) said 3-5 shakes 700-900 calories per day so even if I do 2 hour intervals I would still only do 5 a day so one at 9am, one at 11am, one at 1pm, one at 3pm and the last at 5pm. I'm currently drinking about a gallon of water a day to try and help but it's not lol... I don't know why it is about the sodium in the broth but it just doesn't sit well with me even the low sodium but I'm sure if I tried different ones I might find one that would work and I'm sure that would help with hunger. Thank you for your well wishes it's mind over matter right now and I just need to keep reminding my self why this is important -
Considering Mexico For Gastric Sleeve
AK_Bookworm replied to Kelly Buchanon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It depends on the surgeon... the surgeon I'm going to has one recovery day in the hospital and the 2nd in a recovery house. -

I have to water mine down because they are so sweet but other than that I like it... I do get a slight protein film on my tongue from them. -
Canadian going to Mexico
AK_Bookworm replied to Rosemarie4's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm going to Mexico in three weeks... I'm in the US (Alaska). I'm actually really calm and excited more nervous about the flights there and back (flying at this size makes me extremely anxious because I don't want to make other passengers uncomfortable because I'm large). -
24 hour before surgery liquid diet help
AK_Bookworm posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
What did you guys pack for the clear liquid diet 24 hours before surgery? I have the sample pack of the nectars that I think qualify as a clear liquid since they are juice but wanted other ideas in case these are not considered a clear liquid. I fly in the day before surgery to do preop testing so I'm worried about the 7 hour flight there with only broth and water. -

24 hour before surgery liquid diet help
AK_Bookworm replied to AK_Bookworm's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I didn't even think that the hotel will most likely have broth. I got a packing list from my doctor so I'm going to stick to that. I just got concerned about the clear liquid diet because I don't want to pack anymore than what I'm taking. I'll check with my doctor to make sure the hotel provides broth. Thank you! -
Might be a weird question....
AK_Bookworm replied to painish's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I submitted my history and got approved in February... I would have gone in March (about 3 1/2 weeks after I paid my deposit) if I knew my passport was going to get here as fast as it did but because I wasn't aware it would only take 3 weeks I had to wait a bit due to work trips so I will be going in May. How quick depends on your schedule, the surgeons schedule (which most Mexico doctors are pretty open), surgeon's preop (most require 2 weeks low carb high protein but with a low BMI you may not have one) and how soon you can get a flight and the surgery amount.
