It all began last fall (2016) when I was enjoying the outdoors and walking a mile or two each day ๐ค. In November my right knee started really bothering me ๐ so to be proactive, I decided to go to the doctor and find out what kind of knee support would be the best. ๐ My doctor x-rayed my knees and said that both knees were bone on bone....which means there was no cartilage left (sigh)... no cushion in the joint. She referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. He took one look at my x-rays and said he would put me in an unloader brace (I weighed in at #296 ๐ณ) but that really wasn't the issue ๐ฆSay what????? He announced that he was going to inject ๐ both knees with Cortizone ๐ณ and hope that it helps however, knee replacement is my only option at this point ๐ญ. The really bad news.....what? ๐ณ there's more??? "You are way too heavy (FAT) to be a candidate for knee replacement. You need to lose at least 100 pounds ๐ญ๐๏ธ ๐ญ๐๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ฆ๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ซ no...no...not chocolate! He then said that he thought I was a good candidate for bariatric surgery โ๏ธ๐จ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐ช ...and I thought no way, nada, nope, sorry, but not for this OLD lady pushing 70! (Update: injections did help my knee pain and I resumed my daily walks ๐ค) When my regular doctor received the information from the orthopedist, she concurred and said she thought I was a perfect candidate for bariatric surgery ๐ ...really? She added that I was in good health for my age ๐ต๐ผ and weight ... I was reasonably active ... and the medical issues I do have are directly a result of my obesity๐ค. Reluctantly, I agreed to allow her to ask for pre-approval from my insurance company with the stipulation that I was not agreeing to actually go through with it ๐ค. In February the surgery was approved and I began a reluctant journey ๐....lots of medical testing to weigh my suitability for the program. Psychological test (to see how crazy I was...am....crazy normal or ๐ฆ๐ฉ crazy) breathing test, sleep apnea test, blood tests, X rays, EKG's, heart stress test, nutrition classes and so on. Meanwhile my cortisone injections wear off and my knee pain returns in April and I can no longer go for walks ๐ so I made another appointment with the orthopedic surgeon. I received cortisone injections in both knees for the second time. This time it helped on one knee but not the other .... so I seriously decided to change my diet and lose some weight. Good news is that I've lost nearly #40 since mid April (all by myself ๐ค๐๐โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ๐๐๐ค ...bad news is that my knees are much worse. Now that my mobility is seriously threatened I have had to rethink my options. Soooooooooo, September 12, 2017 ..... yikes๐ฌ next week๐จ โ๏ธ๐จ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐ช๐๐ ๐ ...I am reluctantly having gastric bypass surgery ๐๐ฌ๐. This will speed up my weight loss and hopefully save my knees for a while. Wish me luck...๐ค๐ผ๐๐๐ Had my gbs 9/12/17 by Dr. Gupta ๐ค at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, WA ๐ค I'm 67 Years old ๐ฌ Highest weight 11/2016 #296 ๐๐๐๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐๐ weight at surgery #258 ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ฅ Dr Gupta โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ insurance. I am 67 also. Surgery date 9\12\17. Iโm down 40 since surgery and 78 in total. Iโm with you....this is a health issue...weโll never be 35 again...lol. Take your time and your body will tell you when you are where you need to be. As for having a number goal.....I donโt think itโs that important...if my numbers are good and I feel good then my goals are met. I live in WASHINGTON Where are You? -

Good luck tomorrow๐ Please let me know if it works for you. My doc said it's One injection for a week for three consecutive weeks. I need to make an appointment to have mine done but figured I better wait for my two week postop visit and then go back to working on my knees . I'm in WA State...you? -
I finally found some that work for me. I bought the Hanes men's long leg boxer briefs with banded leg openings and they fit well, don't ride up and can be tucked under our apron. Available at Walmart online. I wear a 32 and bought men's 3XL. Good Luck ๐
