Getting enough protein without protein shakes
RussT posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yesterday I was able to eat enough Protein and only had 1 Protein shake. The Protein shakes are meant to help you get protein if you aren't able to consume the protein you need with actual food. Am I wrong to only have one? I'd prefer to not have shakes at all and just get protein from the foods on my list of what I can eat. Here's what I ate yesterday: Breakfast 1.5 oz natural Peanut Butter - 9 grams protein 1 4oz sugar free applesauce (my pills mixed in with it) lunch 2 hard boiled eggs with a tablespoon of mayo - 12 grams protein 1 4oz serving sugar free pudding SNACK 2oz pureed chicken - 15 grams protein 2 tablespoons mashed potato - 1 gram protein dinner 4 oz pureed turkey - 18 grams protein 4oz protein shake - 34 grams protein TOTAL PROTEIN = 89 GRAMS -
Waking up in the middle of the night with dry mouth
RussT posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I easily drink more than the 64 ounces needed per day, but for the last 2 weeks after my surgery on Nov 9, I wake up at least 6 times a night completely dry mouthed. I keep a bottle of Water by the bed so I can drink a little bit, but I hope this goes away soon. Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks! -

Getting enough protein without protein shakes

Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrowhey has 30 grams of protein per scoop. That plus 4 oz of skim milk totals 34 grams per 4oz protein shake. It's a brand my surgeon has on his list of protein powders to choose from. I get it on Amazon. -
What Were Your Thanksgiving Triumphs and Tribulations?
RussT replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
Since my surgery was two weeks ago, this was my first Thanksgiving where I couldn't eat what everyone else was. I brought my own 4 oz pureed chicken and 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes. I ate the chicken and only 1 bite of potatoes. I was done. The turkey looked and smelled delicious and I really wanted a piece but I knew I couldn't, and I was fine with that. I've eaten enough turkey in my life to know what it tastes like and besides, next year I can have some without having to puree it. I'm just glad I'm able to have more than liquids like week one! -
Getting enough protein without protein shakes
RussT replied to RussT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't consume the 4oz turkey and the 4oz shake at the same time. I had the turkey first and then the shake over an hour later. Maybe even 90 minutes later. -
Hi Tracy, I thought I was the only paranoid one out there! haha. My surgery was Nov 9th and I too had no pain after surgery, and no throwing up. I had an easy time and I can eat 4 ounces of food no problem. Consider yourself lucky. I've heard some stories about people who have had a really rough time post surgery. Russ

HELP! I'm so frustrated by my plateau
RussT posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 30 lbs on my 2 week pre-op diet. I lost 20 lbs in the first week post-op. This past week I've lost only 5 lbs. I really thought the weight would be falling off quicker. I'm having between 90-100 grams of Protein per day, drinking plenty of Water and since I work in an office, I'm walking around much more than I used to. I knew I'd have to deal with plateaus, but I thought they would come later, not within 2 weeks of my surgery. My rational brain says to relax and the weight will start to come off, but the irrational part of my brain says that it's going to come off very slowly from now on. I'm just frustrated and would love some feedback from those who have been in this situation. Thanks! -

HELP! I'm so frustrated by my plateau
RussT replied to RussT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Beto25, Thanks. I know that feeling great and health is the main reason for even having this surgery, but it's so hard to not wish for more weight loss to happen quicker. Next week I'll start swimming each morning before work so hopefully that exercise will get things moving on the scale a bit more. Thanks for your input! The day after my surgery, the nurse in my hospital told me that she had the sleeve a few years ago and if I had constipation to try Milk Of Magnesia. I had to try it a few days after I got home and it took a day to work, but work it did! Good luck!

HELP! I'm so frustrated by my plateau
RussT replied to RussT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first week after surgery I was losing 2-3 pounds per day. Then week 2 began and now I lost 5 pounds over the entire week. I'm happy for the 5 pounds, but that's a pretty quick slow down compared to the first week. I just thought/hoped it would keep coming off rapidly for the first month. -
Hi. I'm Russ and I started out at 470 pounds
RussT posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi there. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on November 9th 2016. I was 470 pounds before the 2 week pre-op diet. Was down to 440 the day of surgery and now one week post-op I'm 420. I made a video that tells my story better than typing it. I'll do another video in a month or so I guess. -
How many calories per day for a man who is 2 weeks post op?
RussT replied to RussT's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thanks everyone. I'm going to call my surgeon's office tomorrow and talk to the nutritionist. I'm still very confused because they say I should be having 70-80 grams of Protein per day, but the 3 protein shakes they want me to have per day add up to 102 grams of protein. Am I not going to lose as much weight if I'm having too much protein?? -
How many calories per day for a man who is 2 weeks post op?
RussT posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'm going to call my surgeon's office on Monday and ask their nutritionist, but I wanted to see what everyone's opinion was on this. How many maximum calories should I be hitting per day in my 2nd week post op? Also, how many ounces of Protein per day should I be eating besides my three 4 ounce Protein shakes? Thanks! -
