Is Dumping Syndrome Common
wiresandwood replied to Barbara1972's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had RNY in Jan 2017 and I experienced no dumping at all. I did vomit a couple of times early in my recovery due to eating too quickly and eating foods that were too dense, but other than that, I haven't had any issues. I am able to eat basically anything in small quantities - in moderation, of course! I'm not gorging on sweets like I used to, but I'll have a small bite of cake or a cookie every once in a while. Strangely, I rarely have cravings for sweets since my surgery, and I used to have the biggest sweet tooth! This surgery has been a great tool for me to finally learn moderation, which has always been my goal. I didn't want to become too obsessed with having a 100% 'perfect' diet, because I feel I would just be turning one addiction into another if that makes sense. I feel I can sustain my current diet for a long time without feeling like I'm being deprived or not enjoying food at all. I've lost 121 pounds so far, so it's definitely working! Having RNY was the best decision I ever made. Good luck to you! -
I was on Optifast shakes only for 3 weeks, and I lost 25 pounds in that time.

Hi all. I had my surgery nearly 3 months ago, and I am SO low energy! I feel lethargic all the time, and I fall asleep at 8 or 9 pm every night! I used to be a night owl. I am eating well, and definitely getting in all of my Protein, Vitamins and Fluid. Is this normal? Is it just my body adjusting to the low calorie intake? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks for the responses. I will try upping my iron and see if that helps at all. I guess it's pretty common to feel this way for a while after surgery!

What is the recovery time?
wiresandwood replied to Nanaoffour's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was off work for 4 weeks. I don't think I would have felt comfortable going back after only 1-2 weeks, even though I work in an office. 3 weeks might have been doable, but I didn't want to risk it. I was in quite a bit of pain for the first couple of weeks. I think it's beneficial to have time at home to get used to your new way of eating and let your body heal. -

What do you tell people who dont know?
wiresandwood replied to B.Annie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Personally, I thought I would only tell close family and friends, but I started finding it was actually easier to just tell anyone who commented or asked. I know that won't work for everyone, but surprisingly, I haven't had a bad comment yet. Mostly people just notice my weight loss and say I'm looking great, and if they ask more questions, I tell them I had surgery. It's a hard process, and definitely nothing to be ashamed of! -
Am I doing something wrong?
wiresandwood replied to strbryt78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am having the same problem. I had gastric bypass on Jan 5th, lost 26 pounds in the first 3-4 weeks, and have only lost 2 or 3 pounds since! This stall has been very frustrating, but I keep reminding myself that this is normal and the body needs time to catch up. As long as we do what we can to hit our vitamin, protein, fluid and exercise goals, the only thing we can do is wait! -
Looking for January op buddies!

Woohoo you're my op twin!Interesting that most of us are on different diet schedules. I know my hospital says 2 weeks for everyone. Which procedure are you having done? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I'm having RNY! I hope everything goes smoothly.Thank you! I hope so too! I shall give you the low down (hopefully without any horror stories!) How are doing? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Finally getting out of the hospital today! I had really horrible nausea and vomiting for the first two days, most likely from the anesthetic. Also some pretty bad pain. I didn't pass gas for the first time until today, so my body still feels like it's full of air. I am feeling better slowly, but the surgery was a lot tougher on me than I expected. I still feel really weak and have trouble walking. Hoping this will all be worth it eventually! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Are you feeling better yet? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Yes, things have definitely improved! Thanks! How are you? I'm feeling like myself again. Only some minor pain left here and there. My strength is back, which is great! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Right now I feel basically zero hunger, and I'm just trying to force myself to get in some nutrition! I find it really hard to get in enough liquids and food. I'm sure it'll get a bit easier down the road, but right now it's still a bit uncomfortable. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Thank you! I am finally home and doing better. I had pretty bad nausea and pain for the first few days, but it's getting a bit easier every day. I just had some porridge, my first actual food since the surgery! Things are looking up. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My surgery is tomorrow, and I am a ball of nerves. I'm considered low risk, so I'm really hoping everything goes well and there are no complications! I've got to finish packing my hospital bag tonight. I can't believe it's here! How is everyone doing? -

Pre op liquid diet
wiresandwood replied to ruthkatniss38's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is in 2 days, and my pre-op diet was 3 weeks long. Honestly, I found the first 4-5 days extremely hard, but it got quite easy afterward. In my experience, I stopped feeling hungry and the cravings slowly subsided. It's kind of nice not having to think about what to eat! I've seen some people say that the pre-op diet is actually harder than after surgery, so if you can get through this, you can make it through anything! -

My surgery is also on Jan 5th! I too am quite nervous, but I keep telling myself how worth it this surgery will be when I start seeing results and feeling healthier. My 3-week pre-op diet got easier every day, but it was VERY hard at first! We are starting the new year off on the right foot! -
Pre-op diet over the holidays...
wiresandwood posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Is anyone else doing their pre-op diet over the holidays? I have a Jan 5th surgery date and I'm supposed to be on my pre-op diet for 3 weeks. It's my 6th day and I am doing very well so far, but OH MAN is it ever a struggle at this time of year! People are bringing treats into my office constantly and offering them to me, and it's a real challenge to say no. I've been to several Christmas parties with huge amounts of tempting food everywhere, and I'm stuck with my shake. Though I know this is only a few weeks out of my life and there will hopefully be a lot more holidays in my future when my health improves after surgery, I do think the pre-op diet is especially tough to accomplish at this time of year! I have to keep reminding myself of the good things that lie ahead. -
Pre-op diet over the holidays...
wiresandwood replied to wiresandwood's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Day 10 of the pre-op diet and I've lost 11 pounds! I'm now down 27 pounds from my highest weight. The loss is really keeping me going. The diet gets easier every single day and even the cravings have been decreasing. @@KWeilbrenner09 That's funny, my mom also said the same thing to me! My family couldn't believe how good I was when I went to a Christmas party last night with a ton of food around, and I didn't even bat an eye. It's great realizing just how strong you can be! I'm starting to get really excited about life after surgery. I know it will be hard, but feeling healthier and lighter will be so amazing. Good luck everyone!! -
Good luck! You are on your way to a new, healthier life! Praying everything goes smoothly and there are no complications. Please update when you can.

Scared of the unknown
wiresandwood replied to Becca125's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date is Jan 5th, and I have moments where I feel extremely anxious about it as well. I'm sure it's very common and normal! I have never had any kind of surgery before, so the actual surgery part scares me a lot. I'm not sure if that's what you're worried about as well, but I just try to remind myself that the doctors perform these kinds of surgeries all the time and everything will go smoothly. Just think of how amazing you will feel once the weight starts dropping! The pros will most definitely outweigh the cons in the long run. We can make it through this! -
Hope everything went smoothly! Good luck

Pre-op diet over the holidays...
wiresandwood replied to wiresandwood's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yesterday I chewed and spit out a single peanut just so I could taste something different than my shakes, broth and Jello! LOL. 2 more weeks to go, but I think I can do it!
