I am one month post-op and have been having a hard time with smells and my gag reflex. I had an issue with this prior to surgery at a much lower level and didn't really think much about it going into surgery. Sometimes I can even just think about how something might smell or taste and it makes me sick to my stomach and even gag. I'm having a hard time keeping things down and definitely cannot do anything chewable for Vitamins. I have found that the Isopure Protein drinks are OK for me and I can sip on them all day. food is hit-or-miss depending on the day and depending on my reflexes. I have read a lot of different forums where people have similar stories but I'm not really sure what I need to do about this. I'm hoping to have an appointment with my bariatric office this week. I really just want to know how long this lasts and if anybody has any tips to get through this period after surgery. Thank you all so much! Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

There will be a few stages of regret or questioning as you progress. New and wierd changes with your body and some hormonal imbalances could make you feel a bit crazy but as each day passes, you get used to it and learn to love yourself and the decision you made! Before you know it, you will be several months out and almost to your goal! Good luck on your journey!! Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

Gagging and throwing up
sarahblu replied to Techeliza's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same issue around the same timeframe. It reminded me of being pregnant with morning sickness! My NUT assured me that i was still healing and that at my 6 month mark, i would be a completely different person and feel a million times better. Hard to hear when you feel so crappy. I had to just take it day by day and tell myself it will end. After about a month and half, it was like a light switch and it was completely done. Havent been nauseous or vomited since. That was 5 months ago! Make sure you rule out any true issues with your doctor first though! Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app -

Wow...what a journey! I remember the dreaded 6 months pre-op and now I am 6 months post-op! Started at 260 and am now 175. Down 85lbs. About another 30 or so to go! So weird to be only 30lbs away from the end goal. Never in my life.... -

6 months! Before, 3 months & 6 months photos!
sarahblu replied to sarahblu's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Wow you guys!! Thanks for all of the wonderful messages! Here are my personal rules i live by now... I dont measure and I dont track but I am good at estimating. I try to drink 1 protein shake each day (premier is my fav) and/or eat a protein bar while on the go (I am in love with the "oh yeah- one" bars). I drink a ton of water, sometimes with Crystal-Light. I enjoy a cup of coffee every morning. Any breads, desserts, or sugary drinks are out the door. I make sure I eat my protein first but I eat all day long. I enjoy running now and hiking! I excersize almost everyday. Even though I just gained 3 lbs, I went down another size...must be building muscle. [emoji6] Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app -

Keep up the good work and inspiring others!! You look amazing! -
Hi guys... it is absolutely normal to hit a couple of stalls along the way. Your body has been through a lot, is healing and will get to a point where it will catch up and pause. Dont be discouraged...this journey is real, the weight loss is real and you WILL be down 80 lbs before you know it (as long as you keep following your plan). I am just at 6 months and have hit a few stalls where zero weight came off for a few weeks...dont give up, just be patient.

Thanks everyone! For those of you just starting or about to begin your journey, whatever struggles you may have, dont give up or give in...it will get better and you can be very successful if you work the program and just be patient. Not everyone looses at the same rate so dont get discouraged about your success! -
I don't like the way I feel
sarahblu replied to elbee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Reading all of your posts takes me back to my first 2 months post op! It is the craziest thing with the heightened sense of smell and the nausea! Totally felt like a first trimester for sure! My family thought I was nuts! Everything tasted funny and smelled horrible! I would gag just thinking about it. I felt it was never going to end and that the rest of my life would be like that. My NUT insisted I would get through it and that at my 6 month appt with her, I would be a completely different person and feel back to "normal". SO TRUE!!! I am now 6 months out and have felt great and "normal" for the past 4 months. It will pass! The tastes, smells and nausea will change and get better! Hard not to linger on it and not think about it all day long but just go one day at a time and before you know it, it will all be over with. -
Just know it is AWFUL right now but it will go away! Your body is healing and so it can go through some rough patches. The advise I was given was to just eat/drink what I could and take it one day at a time. Zofran helped. I would sip on very cold isopure, to get my protein in...this too shall pass...you can fight through it!!!

Can someone help me I am having trouble drinking my protein.
sarahblu replied to neni26's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sometimes in the beginning, right after surgery, the thicker protein shakes can be hard to choke down. I had a hard time in the beginning but I can drink them no problem now...it seems our taste buds and tolerance for certain foods change as you heal. I drank the isopure until I could handle the thicker ones. -
That's awesome!! Congrats! You look amazing.

Post-Op Body Image Crying Session :(
sarahblu replied to nocturnalgemi's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely do the photos! As I began to loose, I noticed some changes in the mirror especially in the face. As time went on, my size went down but my shape stayed the same. It wasn't until I compared my 3 month postop to my before pic that I could definitely see the difference. At 6 months now, I still have a similar shape but much smaller. I am addicted to taking new photos of myself and putting them next to old ones... so fun. Sometimes when I am anxious or upset, I write to calm myself. Maybe write a letter to your new self about all of the positive things you look forward to. Also write about all of the issues you have being overweight. It may help putting it out there and also will help to read it when you go through the process. Good luck! -

I like the Quest bars too. I have bought one of each flavor from Walmart to try them. Now that I know which flavors I like, I can buy bulk. I keep a couple with me at all times just in case. Definitely check the sugar amount...some can be really high.

I cannot decide if I should do this or not
sarahblu replied to BeachMommy2Girls's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The "what ifs" can be so scary. The fear of the unknown... But, we don't know our future either way. The surgery is unknown and whether or not issues will arise and also NOT doing anything is unknown. Either way, you need to decide for yourself. Both are a choice. Personally, I chose the risk for the hopeful reward. Doing something for my health in a positive way was the best choice for me. This is not a quick fix or an easy road. You will still have to work at it every day. I had complications in the beginning that landed me back in the hospital for an additional week. I then had a wicked round of nausea that lasted for about a month and half. Things can happen and they can be awful but they can be that way if you choose not to have the surgery. I am the healthiest I have ever been and am able to run, hike and actually participate in life. Once you decide, time will seem to stand still but then afterwards, it will fly by!! Best wishes for you! -
5 days post op & weak !! Please tell me it gets better
sarahblu replied to Sugarnspice's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost some muscle in the beginning but once I could excersize, I have regained a bunch!! I was never a runner and now I love it! If you enjoy strength training, you will lose the fat and be a lean muscle machine! Good luck with your surgery... -
So I am 5 months post-op and am down 75 lbs. My 12 year old daughter had a dance performance over the weekend. I was sitting in the balcony at the theater and remained after the show. The performers gathered on stage and were getting feedback from the director. My daughter was looking around so I stood up and waved to her. She looked confused and pointed to herself and was like "me???" Um...yes you silly... she slightly waved and looked somewhat embarrased. She told me afterwards that she DIDN'T RECOGNIZE IT WAS HER OWN MOTHER! At a distance, she visually saw a much skinnier person and thought it was some random person. Ha!! THAT, my friends was so AWESOME!!!

So so true!! Lol. Congrats on your progress too!!!
