  1. How much did you workout pre-op? Or did you work out at all? I'm curious to see what people do or don't do. Please be honest if you don't/didn't work out pre-op.

    July Sleevers!!!

Ive bought a water bottle, protein powder, sugar free jello, pjs, slippers, veggie broth and that's really it. I buy a pack or two of protein shakes on every payday to stock up a little bit. Oh, I also bought those colorful popsicle things^. I think a lot of the other stuff, I'll pick up afterwards. The vitamins I bought didn't have enough zinc for my nutritionist's taste, so I have to finish them and buy new ones.

    Pre-op workout?

I used to work out and walk daily. Then we moved across the country and I don't work out as much. Since starting the bariatric program, I've started using an exercise bike, but it isn't consistent. To get in more walking since it rains ALL the time, I've been walking up and down my stairs. Constantly. But I just wonder if it's enough. Sometimes I use resistance bands and jump rope a little. Should I up my activity level? Or should I not worry so much since I am getting in so work. I plan to exercise after surgery.

    July Sleevers!!!

I am July 3rd as well. How come they scheduled your pre-op so far out? Mine isn't until the 23rd. And I start liquids on the 18th or 19th. It does seem fitting.

    Any June Sleevers!?!

I was told that I am looking at the first week of June. Waiting to hear back with a specific date.
  8. Why is he not supportive? My husband wasn't at first but after talking to my doctors he was on board. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App No, he is super supportive. I am just EXTREMELY private. He knows that. But sometimes in the moment, he likes to over share with people, especially his family. His family has never liked me, they have never given me a chance. They have always done shitty things to me, so I cut off all communication with them. Which has helped a lot, but they still look for any reason to talk about me and make up lies. So I just worry that he could let it slip one day. Or if something was to happen between us. I told him that I wish I could go to legal and draw up some form that says he could never say anything. Haha. I just hate people knowing my business. I joked and used the example that it's like two people committing murder together or a crime, you know you aren't going to say anything but are hopeful that the other person won't. Then the next thing you know, you are in prison.Haha. (I watch a lot of crime shows.) he swears that he won't say anything. I sure hope not. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Previous blood clot

I've had a few DVTs, a small PE and a clot in my portal vein. My surgeon said that I could still get the sleeve. She said that she wishes they knew why I clot, but they have done all the tests and can't find anything. But she said that I just need to think about my choice long and hard, just in case I might get another clot. She said they will follow the plan set by my hematologist for blood thinners and dosage. How long was your process?

Where are you located? I have tricare prime. I had my first appointment with bariatric in October. I have my last nutrition appointment on the 3rd of January. After that, schedule for my decision appointment with the surgeon to tell them with which surgery I want. The military hospital I am at, has a wait list. So I'll be put on that. They told me to expect to have to wait until the spring. So far away. Ugh. Haha. There is a girl that is going through the same place, she started her appointments in July, went to her decision appointment around October 1st, and is still waiting for her surgery date. But it all depends on where you are being seen. There is a tricare weight loss surgery facebook group that is helpful, it is called Weight Loss Surgery with Tricare. 12. Hello, this is my first post. I tried to look through to find information, but the posts I found were never updated. I have a history of clotting, a few times in my legs and once in my portal vein. I've been tested several times and they can never find a reason as to why I clot sometimes. I am just now starting this journey. I go tomorrow for my orientation at the bariatric surgeon's office. I saw my new hematologist today. He said that he hopes that I'm not trying to have a gastric bypass. I said I am trying to get a sleeve. He said that he'd advise against it because they receive patients all the time who have had the surgery and are lacking the nutrients and all of them gain the weight back. He said that I should just lose 2 lbs a month, 24 a year. I'd still be obese. He then left the room and the nurse said that they'd advise against it because of my history of clotting and the fact that I'd have to be placed on blood thinners right after surgery and they won't do that or be willing to give me the dose I need. She said to ask the surgeon. She then said that I have kids that I need to worry about and shouldn't be take part in elective surgeries. She said surgeries that I need to save my life are different. But if I am obese and unhealthy and at risk of a stroke or heart attack, I would think that would be saving my life?. Am I being selfish for wanting to do this? Has anyone been in this situation where they clot, what happened to you? I am so worried. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Not telling anyone. What do you say?

My husband said that also. That when people lose weight so fast and dramatically, others think they are on drugs. I'm not around most people, so that wouldn't fit my situation. But I told him that not everyone things negatively like that. My husband is in the military and had a mesh put on to repair a hiatal hernia in early 2014. He was on a liquid diet for a bit. He is already pretty thin, but he lost so much weight. People in his company started questioning if he was on drugs and he was tested. We laugh about it. He is having issues with GERD again and they just found another hernia, so he has to have another surgery soon. He was talking with guys that he worked with back in 2014 and they were all telling him how everyone was worried about him back then and how rumors of drugs went around. It is pretty crazy. Some people just assume the worst. When I see that people have lost weight, my first thought goes to diet and exercise or wondering if they've been sick (depending on if they look ill or not). I don't typically just assume people are on drugs, unless they have a history of drugs. But you never know what people are thinking. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Not telling anyone. What do you say?

I reiterate, we can still help others without telling everyone. Look at this forum, so many people helping out others and a lot aren't vocal about their decision in everyday life. Same with social media. I am not telling anyone but my husband. That doesn't make me untruthful. I just don't tell anyone my business. I keep everything in my life private. I do not overshare on social media with friends and family. I do not call and tell people anything about my life. I say we are good and I move on. With my last pregnancy, I didn't share with most people until late in the pregnancy, not because I was ashamed, but because it just wasn't anyone's business. And then I didn't let them know how far along I was or when I was due, because it really didn't matter. That time was for me and my husband, so it didn't matter if anyone was hurt or upset by it. I go to school and no one knows my major. Like I said, I am just a private person. Extremely private. If I lost weight In the past I'd keep that to myself. I would usually get negative feedback from family, so it wouldn't matter how I did it or how much was lost. If we want to avoid negativity, that is our choice. In the end, whether we decide to help others or not, that is also our choice. Yeah you choose to, but others may not. Just because we have surgery, does not mean that we sign up to be advocates. That does not make us untruthful. If someone walked up to me and asked how I lost weight, I would not say weight loss surgery, because that is private and no one's business but my own. If they assume, there is nothing I can do about that. If I share my workout or what I eat, that is also not being untruthful, because that is something I have to do to lose or maintain. But I am fine with asking and helping on here, because the anonymity doesn't require for someone to be up in my business. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Social Media

I am not sharing. My husband knows, but no one else will know. I am a VERY private person, so it isn't something I'd share with people. I do have a instagram account for it, where I follow others that have had the surgery or are about to. Between that, here and my husband, I have the support and resources that I need. Straws

I don't drink soda from a straw and I'm not eating out everyday to be drink out of a straw, like someone said. I only drink Water and I've been that way for about 9 years. I love water. I buy these big cups from Starbucks and drink on them throughout the day. It helps get me get in enough water. I think they are 24 ounces each. Since I drink out of these all day every day, that is why I think it would be tough for me to transition to no straws at all. So I'm glad that so many have heard different opinions from doctors and have had no negative effects from them. I will have to test the waters after my surgery and see how/if it affects me. This entire thread seems so silly. I just want to keep my straws, dang it! Haha. Thanks everyone, for responding. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Straws

Yeah, I know they say not to and the air, Yada yada. But I've seen quite a bit of sleevers on IG that use straws down the road, so my question is aimed towards the ones that use them. Thank you @LisaMergs. I thought they'd funnel nicely too. So I thought it was strange that I'd have to stop, but it could just be my mind rebelling. Haha. I drink from a straw all day, every day. It would be odd to stop. But I guess if I have to for a while, then I will. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Not telling anyone. What do you say?

I couldn't do that. I choose to go public to help sleevers and non sleevers. I think its important to me that people understand that my sleeve helped me drop 104 pounds. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T337A using the BariatricPal App As I stated in my comment, I am not telling everyone because I like my privacy and to avoid negativity. There are a lot of instagram accounts of sleevers that are VERY helpful to others wanting the surgery or to support the ones that have had the surgery already.... you might find it a little surprising that a lot of them are closet sleevers. Even if we are not open with people in our everyday lives, we can still be useful to others by other means like private social media accounts, groups or forums. Not telling anyone. What do you say?

I haven't had surgery yet. My husband is the only one that knows. He is fully supportive of me not wanting to tell anyone. He knows that I don't like to share a lot of stuff from our lives normally, so this isn't any different. We like to prevent any drama that our families can create out of nothing. My oldest heard me talking about getting a tubal, she asked when I was going to do that. So I'm just going to stick with that, a tubal. I'm not going to tell her anything else, since I am trying to get it done at the same time. I'm not really active on social media, but after the surgery, I plan to start posting about working out and getting into shape. Hopefully that will be enough for people when my body changes. I know two people that have had the surgery and two that have had a bypass. And I have been there when family has talked so negatively about those people. One was recent and they said she looked so gross because she had lost a lot of weight, but honestly, the girl looks amazing. They are just negative. When I had lost weight previously (many years ago), they said that I looked so sick because of the size of my wrists. I wasn't even that small, I wore a size 10 for pete's sake. Haha. If people were to outright ask me, I'll probably say that I wish I did and laugh it off. But I don't think I'd just say no. But you can't really do anything if people just assume or gossip. There are just negative people out there like that. And will think what they want, no matter what you say. I am trying to get this one job. I was talking to my husband about how I'd get off for the surgery. I'm not sure yet how the company works, but hopefully I can take 2 weeks off if I get the job. He said that I'd have to tell them. I don't think I will. I might just say that it my tubal. Or emergency. You don't have to disclose that information. So I'm hoping for the job and that I'll get the time off. Even if it is without pay. I'd still be happy. I'm going to take 2 weeks off of school too. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Catheter question?

I have the same fear. Too many bad experiences with catheters. When I was in the hospital for blood clots, I had several catheters put in during a month long stay. One, they forgot to inflate the balloon and it came right out and they had to put in a new one. When I had my second child, the put the catheter in after I was on the table and couldn't feel anything. I was so happy about that. Not too happy that two men were hanging out by my lady bits. Haha. During my third pregnancy, I was having contractions and went to the er. While in my little room, I could hear the ladies at the Nurse's station saying that they didn't meet their quota of catheters. I didn't even know that was a thing. I had gotten up to go to the restroom once, but when I had to get up again, the nurse said they HAD to put in a catheter so that I could be monitored better. I hated being lied to. Then at the csection, they put the catheter in beforehand when I could still feel it. I need to ask my doctor if I'll have to have one. I sure hope not. It is one of my biggest worries about surgery too. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  24. Luckily, I have a closet full of jeans ranging from 10s to 20s. After years of denial about gaining even more weight, I'd just hang onto the jeans I have. I would keep them to try to entice myself to lose weight or I'd by a pair of jeans a size smaller to try to work towards them, only to never be able to fit into them. I usually buy my jeans from American eagle, and their jeans haven't changed much over the years, only the stitching on the back pockets and labels. Other that that, they are still in style. I recently purchased two pairs of 20s, since my 16s were tight and I would not be able to survive the cold winter in thin palazzo pants. I didn't get 18s because they are so close in fit, that I was okay with a little extra room. I haven't had surgery yet, but afterwards, I will wait to skip to 16s. I won't buy a pair of 18s and I will work my way through what I have. When I get through those, I won't know what to do. Haha. I haven't been anything smaller than a 10 in 14 years. If I ever lost weight, 10s were as small as I could get to, because I have some junk in this trunk. Haha. I'll probably shop at Ross or TJ Maxx. They have great prices. I don't thrift shop, just because if I am donating stuff that is out of style, why would I shop the out of style clothes that other people donate. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
