    Calling all April Bandsters!!!!

Hey guys! My problem isn't a plateau in the normal sense, but it's my own fault. It's summer and my kids are home. And like you said, it's just too hot to do much of anything outside. I'm still loosing, miraculously, but not like I should be. I haven't been exercising. We've been hanging out a lot with friends and the frozen margaritas are oh so good when it's so hot out! We've also been eating out a lot. Anyway, school starts in a couple of weeks for my kids and for me, so having a routine again will really help. I'm also taking a P.E. and a weight training class. It's a good way to kick my booty into gear again. I also need to be in the April bandsters rooms again. It helps to have the support of those who started this journey when you did. I had to have a small unfill (only 1/4 cc) because I got a stomach bug and my band got so tight I could hardly get water down. I'll go back in a couple of weeks to have it put back and hopefully a little more. That'll help too. Leslie - I like to run too. I was doing it until July when things got chaotic for me and I got strep. I just haven't started in again. I don't know why I do that to myself because now it'll be like starting over. I can't wait until it gets cooler out so I can run again outside. I get so bored on the treadmill even though I have a T.V. in there and I listen to music. Of course it won't cool off enough until October, so I guess I better just suck it up and start on the treadmill again! Ha! Anyway, you are doing great. We seem to have a lot in common. Keep in touch and I'll be better about coming in here more often. Keep up the good work!!
  2. Hey Paula! Congrats on getting your surgery date. You'll do fine. It's the best thing I've ever done for myself and I would it over and over, if I had to. I'm a fellow Texan in the DFW area. Keep us posted on your progress. Good luck!!
  3. This is an emergent situation. My doc would either meet you at the office or at the ER. Like Linda said your girlfriend's doc has to have a backup plan if he's going to be away. You need to get in touch with either the nurse or on-call doc. However, if her doc is truly unavailable and doesn't have an on-call doc to help out, then you have to go to the ER. In which case I'd be looking for another doc next week. Either way, she can not wait until Monday. It's very possible for her band to get tighter and tighter as her stomach and pouch swell. Get her in ASAP. Good luck and keep us posted.

    fill with vomting

Call your doc right away. I haven't had a fill in 8 weeks and then I started having some stomach cramping (probably a stomach bug) and all of the sudden my band was so tight water felt like it was gettting stuck. I went in yesterday and he only did a small unfill, 1/4 cc. You can't imagine the relief. All of the sudden it felt like I could breath again even though I didn't realize I was feeling like that. In a couple of weeks when my stomach is completely back to normal I'll go back in and have the 1/4 cc put back in because this last fill was pretty close to where I need to be for a while. I was getting so frustrated because everything I tried to swallow caused pain. It's not worth it. Besides you can mess up your band. You don't want to have to have a surgical revision. Go in and have a small unfill. Loosing weight is great, but not if you are miserable.
  5. Allergies and sinus problems can cause the symptoms you are experiencing. I had some of the same problems... acid reflux, couldn't keep anything down, etc. I got scared and went to the doc. He said my pouch was full of mucus which was causing everything to come back up. Also my stomach was irritated. I took Zyrtec and liquid Mucinex. I was completely better after one day. I would have never thought of allergies as the culprit. Keep your appointment just to make sure everything is okay, but ask your doc about the allergies. Good luck.
  6. Do you have allergies or sinus problems at all? I did the same thing a couple of months ago. All the sudden I had reflux and I actually started throwing up anything I tried to eat, I mean anything. I got scared and went in, there was nothing wrong with my band. I suffer from allergies and he told me my pouch was probably full of mucus which would cause everything to come back up. I took over the counter allergy meds (Zyrtec and liquid Mucinex). It completely cleared up in a day. You might want to ask your doc if this is a possibility. Good luck!

    United Healthcare Denial?

I would think that for them to make you do the 6 month diet, it would have to be a written policy; however, you can never tell with insurance companies. I didn't have to do the 6 month diet either, just 5 years history. I got them copies of the progress notes from my PCP and gyno. Good luck!!
  9. As long as he's getting plenty of water, I wouldn't worry too much. He's drinking Isopure, so he's getting protein. There is also milk, sugar free popsicles, and jello. For the mushy stage there's pudding, yogurt, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, any kind of soup is good. There are tons of cream based soups, surely there's one he likes out there. If it's a chunky soup, just puree it or mash it up really fine. Right now is a healing time and this is only his 3rd day post-op. As long as he isn't getting dehydrated he's fine.

    Crazy Skinny Goals!

Okay, I'm at least 100 years older than most of you posting on this thread;however, old ladies have goals and dreams too. LOL. I have been super responsible my entire life. So, now this year I'm turning 35, starting nursing school in January, and hopefully will be at goal soon after. I want a really sexy, hot, cool tattoo. I want to do something that no one would ever expect of me. So, I guess basically I'm a 35 year old (well almost) doing the rebellious stuff I never did the first time around!

    Alcohol (Wine) Post Op???

My two favs are Cherry Pomegranate and Orange (like tang) Crystal Light w/ lime or cherry vodka (usually w/ a twist of lime for good measure). I've also been known to add a splash of cherry juice or grenadine to the orange one. I would be willing to bet that any of the "fruity" crystal lights would be good. Cheers!

    United Healthcare Denial?

Every UHC plan differs. It will depend largely on whether or not your company has any weight loss surgery exclusions. I have UHC and my husband's company doesn't have any exclusions; however, they did require 5 years of documentation and a BMI of 35 w/ comorbidities or 40+ and no comorbidities. My BMI was slightly less than 40 and I don't have any comorbidities. I was approved in less than a week. I just went to my regular doc and my gyno and got records for the past 5 years. I just requested office notes which states your weight and BP. I was consistently overweight for all of those years. Evidently it was okay because I'm 3 months post-op now. I haven't had to pay for anything out of pocket except for the nutritionist eval. I know I'm very lucky as we have a really good plan. Good luck!!

    Alcohol (Wine) Post Op???

I have not had any trouble at all consuming alcohol in moderation. Wine isn't my favorite, but I do drink it occassionally. I love margaritas, but have pretty much stopped drinking them because of the sugar/calorie content. My new favorite drink is crystal light and lime vodka. I do not ever have anything carbonated. The reason most docs discourage it is because it's empty calories. Also, you will want to be careful because it does affect me differently now that I'm banded, I get tipsy quicker. Good news for hubby because now I'm a cheap date! LOL. I also am very careful not to let it get out of hand because I absolutely do not want to throw up. I don't drink a lot, but I'm not going to live the rest of my life not being able to have a drink with friends if I want. Just my opinion though.

    Calling all April Bandsters!!!!

Hey all! I don't know why, but it's been a while since I've been in here. I guess like you said, the newness is wearing off a little. My last fill was a good one and I am finally feeling pretty good restriction. I think I'll be able to wait longer than a month this time before getting another. My doc seems to think that I'm pretty close to where I need to be for a while. Glad to see everyone doing so well.

    Migraines

I get migraines too. I take Imitrex for the headache. I still have a tube of the anti-nausea gel that they gave me for surgery. I haven't had to use it yet, but I'm keeping it for that purpose. You just rub a little on your wrist and it gets absorbed through the skin so you don't have to take anything orally. You might ask your doc about it if you don't have any. You have to go to a compounding pharmacy to get it because they have to make it for you. Anyway, good luck and I hope this helps. I know how miserable migraines are. I've suffered since I was a kid.
  19. I had totally forgotten about this spreadsheet. I'm glad I finally checked back in and found it again. I updated my info, but it added me again at the bottom. I'm not sure how to fix it. Everyone is doing so well! Congrats! I can't believe it's been three months already! I remember when I didn't think my surgery date would ever get here! Time flies....
  20. Tina - Sometimes if I've eaten something really rich, then my stomach hurts for a while. I try not to do that very often, but we've all been there. I agree, if it's not better soon, call the doc. Good luck. I hope you feel better soon!! Okay, I'll probably get blasted for this, but I just can't let this one go.... Caybachman, I find it really hard to believe that you eat perfectly healthy 100% of the time. I made a promise to myself that I would not diet anymore which means that if I want a biscuit w/ gravy, I have it! This poor lady is posting for help, not lecture. She probably realizes now that it was something she probably shouldn't have eaten. We've all been there. She asked if we knew of anything that would make her feel better, not whether or not we agree with her food choice. Besides that, we don't know what her normal diet is like. Maybe this was a treat. We all have them. I also realize that when you post here you are opening yourself up to others opinions, but still....

    Hospital Stay

It really depends on the doc and the insurance co. I was at the hospital for about 4 hours total. I even came out of the OR with an elevated BP, but it came down quickly. I wish I had gotten to stay a little longer as I wasn't really even awake and they were shoving me in the car. I really don't remember the ride home except that I got sick in the car. I can also tell you that I had very little surgical pain. The pain I had was from the gas they inflate your abdomen with. Even so, it was the best thing I've ever done for myself. Good luck! I'm sure you'll do just fine!
  22. Paul - I'm really sorry you had to have an open surgery. I know it was a disappointment due to the longer healing time, etc. But the good news is you're finally a bandster! I know you've been waiting a long time for this. Congrats! I wish you a very speedy recovery!
  23. It does get better. I still remember those days of wanting to eat something, anything. Right now you are still healing and your body is still adjusting. I'm about 3 months out and I've gotten to where food isn't the center of my world any more. I don't crave as much as I used to and it has gotten easier for me to say no to the foods I used to love. I also find that I'm hardly ever really hungry, but I also try to eat on a schedule that keeps me from getting that way. I eat because I need to. I feel better than I ever have. You'll get there too, it just takes some time. Just do the best you can to get through this rough spot and know that it does get better!
