What do you wish you'd known before lap band surgery?
Treadmillwalker replied to Sarah A's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
that is a very interesting proposition and as a person who works with data and metrics, I'd really like to see the data for failed lap bands and review for commonalities. @@Alex Brecher, what do you think about some data analysis? Not just for bands, but for all surgeries? It's extremely difficult to do a study like this. There is the newish MBSAQIP reporting that many "accredited" bariatric centers report to but the data isn't really public and it's going to be a little while until it can be put into practical use. There are many bariatric centers that aren't part of this at all. I just read about a new study that's starting that was recently awarded but sadly it doesn't include Lap-Band. The problem is we don't even have noisy data one can try and work out the signal from - the anecdotal evidence here suggests that there's a contingent of unknown size of people whose bands are failing them because they aren't changing their eating habits and continue to eat too much, fast, without chewing enough etc.nearly every day and in some cases at every meal. I simply haven't been able to find studies on why that is. Why would you knowingly consume food in such a way that you *know* it is very likely to make you sick? I don't understand that. And also, I very strongly believe that smoking has a substantial effect on one's hunger/PCOS/insulin and I've not found anything on that either. I gave up smoking just before the surgery but took it up again this week after eight weeks and fifteen pounds lost and I've gained three pounds on the scale - now I've done some other stuff that could also explain that like consuming quite a high amount of salt yesterday, but it's impossible to work out what's causing what because the research is either not done or it's locked away in a journal somewhere I can't find. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I believe success rates have significantly increased due to more extensive educational requirements pre surgery due to insurance company requirements or the bariatric surgery center offering/requiring. I took six months of classes pre-surgery and attend a monthly support group post surgery. I'm always learning from others and feel encouraged after I leave support group. Plus I'm making friends with people who understand the journey regardless of which surgery we each had. that is a very interesting proposition and as a person who works with data and metrics, I'd really like to see the data for failed lap bands and review for commonalities. @@Alex Brecher, what do you think about some data analysis? I went through 6 months of classes, worked with the bariatric team to discuss options, what made sense for my personality, healthy, eating habits, etc. I also love that the band is adjustable and my doctor uses a florascope when making adjustments. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

I was banded 10/12/16. It took me a couple of weeks to adjust and get all my Water and Protein in. I had my first fill 11/15/16 and I feel minimal restriction. I will have my second fill after Christmas and third in late January. I was told it will take 3 to 5 fills to reach my sweet a/k/a green spot. I look forward to seeing how I adjust. Best wishes to you. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

Not dumping, suspect it is something you ate. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

What are your favorite flavors and try and find high Protein low carb recipes to replace and still get a hint of the flavor you love. Don't drink your calories or overdue sweets and carbs. Perhaps drink only Protein shakes for a couple days why you plan your meals post protein shakes. It will keep you full and help you reset. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

My bariatric doctor shared it is easy for people post bariatric surgery to trade a food addiction for another unhealthy addiction such as too much alcohol, smoking, overdoing exercise, etc. I suggest you ask yourself why you are smoking and what benefit are you getting and why smoking versus other productive activities. Eating schedule
Treadmillwalker replied to Mommyof4boys's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It is important to stay ahead of hunger. I suggest you try various times to see what works. I drink a lot of Water which helps me fill full so I can go 3 hours or so if a ate a Protein heavy meal. My Snacks are Protein shakes, yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna pouch, etc. I stay at 1,000 calories a day or less. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16 -
2 1/2 post-op update.

So many factors impact weightloss. How much are you eating? Exercising? What types of food, etc.? I attend a bariatric support group led by a dietician. She is great about reviewing our food and activity logs if we have questions. Reach out to your doctor, nurse or dietician an be honest revealing what you are eating and doing. Drink at least 64 ounces Water daily. It will help your skin, tummy, etc given your low calories. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16 -
In my bariatric Group a person reported the surgeon canceled her surgery because she was still smoking. She didn't say which test, just that she flunked it. She is still working to quit. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

bipro Protein Water is something you can find online. It contains protein. I find it too sweet so I put 8 ounces peach or lemon in a glass and dilute with 24 ounces ice tea or water. It is expensive, but I am no longer eating fast food, etc and I'm saving money in those areas. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

It mentions 8 servings just above the ingredient list. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

I eat what my family eats, but in smaller portions. I skip the potatoes and eat extra veggies. I leave the cheese off my burger and buy lean meats that we all eat. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

New to the whole weight loss surgery field! HELP!
Treadmillwalker replied to boots_and_bridles's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The surgeon will guide you. I went through 6 months of classes with a bariatric team and learned the options. I knew after that what I wanted and myself discipline required to be successful. The doctor and I discussed and he agreed. Others in my classes were guided to other options after talking with the medical team. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16 -
BCBS FL How to get approval
Treadmillwalker replied to whitneyisfab's topic in Insurance & Financing
I have BCBS Anthem through my employer. I emailed them and asked if it was covered and the requirements. I received back the detailed information and worked with my surgeon's office. The surgeon's team can be helpful with finding this out too. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16 -
I chew gum. I have to be careful that I don't put too much air in my pouch from chewing gum. I don't some, gave up carbs and plan to keep my sugar free gum. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

Bariatric Adult Diapers
Treadmillwalker replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think Poise pads works for those who have stress incontinence due to obesity. If they need a diaper they are eating too much fat and sugar and are not compliant IMHO. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16 -
