You look so amazing! Congratulations! -
Hello All! I just went to the Kaiser South Sacramento orientation on October 27th and have my appointment with the Surgeon (Dr. P Yenumula) on this upcoming Friday (Nov. 4). I'm hoping that I will be considered for surgery despite my lower bmi. I am currently at 5'2" and weight 200 lbs. My doctor began blood pressure meds for hypertension at my referral appointment but seemed to think that I wasn't a very strong candidate for WLS. My bmi is slight under 37 so I know I qualify bmi wise. Anyways, I was wondering if there are any other people out there who are beginning the process with Kaiser South Sacramento like me. I'm very excited to have Dr. Yenumula because he seems very compassionate and non-judgmental! My husband is very supportive of my pursuit of weight loss surgery but my family is not. They keep saying that I'm "not that fat" and just need to try harder to loose weight. As it stands now, I walk 15k steps a day and eat a well balanced diet of 1200 cals a day. I also do 30 mins of cardio 5 days a week. I feel like the harder I try, the less weight I loose! Any KP South Sac peeps out there?!?

BariatricPal Policy Reminders – Everyone Please Read!
khoktzen replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Rants & Raves
If one wants their account deleted, they generally don't respond to a post and ask the individual in charge of the forums to delete their account. The onus is on you to delete your account. You can't claim that Alex isn't deleting your account because he doesn't want to see numbers go down. It's simply common sense that you need to do that yourself. Hello Everyone! I currently live in Sacramento, CA and am a member of Kaiser Perm. Norcal. I have been dieting for quite some time with not much success. I did the KP medical weight loss program in 2013 and lost about 20 pounds. Afterwards, I attempted to discuss WLS with my PCP and she basically said I don't qualify and that was that. I attempted to talk to her about it again last year and she still wouldn't even consider it. I am 5'2" and weight anywhere from 190-200 pounds so my BMI is borderline 35+. As such, I asked about exploring the possibility of having any of the required comorbities for WLS. She would not budge. After begging and pleading repeatedly to just consider WLS and a referral, I finally decided to do some research and get a new PCP. Luckily, I found a wonderful PCP and it turns out I have hypertension. I didn't realize this because every time I had gone in for an appointment, the medical assistant and dr didn't say anything about my blood pressure being high. When my new PCP reviewed my chart she said that my blood pressure has been high for quite some time and this should have been addressed. She prescribed blood pressure meds and gave me a referral to Kaiser South Sac Bariatrics. She's not sure how strong of a candidate I am and whether or not the surgeons will agree to perform WLS but I'm excited that I finally have a PCP that is listening to me. Anyways, I'm waiting to hear from the bariatric department. They said that it could be anywhere from 2-3 before I hear anything but they did confirm that they received the referral. I hope the surgeon will find that I'm a good candidate that will really benefit from surgery!

Kaiser Sacramento PCP won't consider referring me for WLS
khoktzen posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Greetings everyone! I have been tirelessly researching forums regarding Kaiser Northern CA and finally decided to write a post and ask for advice. I have been pretty overweight for the last 10-12 years. I have hovered between 190-200 and am 5'2". My BMI has consistently been just above 35. In 2013 I asked my PCP provider about weight loss surgery. She said that I didn't qualify as I don't weigh enough or have enough comorbities. She then said that I could consider the medical weight loss program but if I was planning on having children any time soon there "was no point." Being that I wanted to get to a a healthier weight prior to having children I ignored her advice and tried the Kaiser medical weight loss program anyways. I got down to about 182, got pregnant, was very careful during pregnancy and didn't gain a lot of weight at all. My daughter is now two and my weight has slowly crept back up to about 195. I asked my dr again about weight loss surgery and if there were any possible comorbities I might have that coupled with my 35 bmi might make be eligible for surgery. Again she said no and that I just need to diet and excercise. I explained that I follow a very strict 1200-1400 cal diet that is very well balanced, walk 13k-15k steps a day and do cardio/swimming 3 times a week. I am very frustrated and truly believe I have adopted a much more healthy and active lifestyle and feel weight loss surgery would be a valuable extra tool to help with weight loss. I filed a grievance last December and Kaiser sided with my PCP and reiterated that I'm not eligible. So, my question is, should I contact my dr again and ask to have a sleep evaluation done? My husband has mentioned that my snoring is getting worse and I always feel very tired when I wake up and a lot of the time I gave headaches. OR should I try to get a different PCP at Kaiser in Sacramento? I'm just not sure what to do. Does anyone have a recommendation for a Sacramento area PCP that is more supportive of obese patients trying to utilize weight loss surgery as a helpful tool to be healthy?? Or should I drop Kaiser altogether and switch to a different plan like Sutter in Sacramento? (I work for the state of CA and have callers health insurance) help!!! Can anyone offer any insight into qualifying for surgery with a 35 bmi and a sleep apnea diagnosis? My PCP referred me for a sleep study that I'm doing tonight at home because I said I have concerns about sleep apnea. If the test comes back with mild sleep apnea will that qualify as a comorbity or does it have to be moderate or severe? I have Kaiser in Northern California. I'm thinking I may have mild sleep apnea and I forsee Kaiser saying that it's not severe enough to qualify. So frustrating! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I got the results and they said I have mild sleep apnea but they couldn't give me the specifics at the lab because apparently my dr has too. I'm assuming she's going to say to loose weight, at which point I'll ask for a bariactric referral again and she'll more than likely say no. So frustrating! Kaiser Sacramento PCP won't consider referring me for WLS

Update: I requested a sleep study because I let my PCP know I have concerns about sleep apnea and she referred me right away. I'm doing the study tonight at home and hopefully I'll get the results rather quickly. I just assume that I have mild sleep apnea and Kaiser will said it needs to be severe for it to be a comorbity. It's sad I'm hoping I have it so I qualify!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hi Katie- I happened to come across your post as I'm in a very similar situation. I'm 5'2" and hovering between 190-200 lbs. My bmi is currently right at 35 however, I haven't been officially diagnosed with any co-morbities. I've asked my dr on multiple occasions about weight loss surgery but she won't give me a referral. I did the Kaiser Medical Weight loss program and got down to about 187 but have since crept back up. I've adopted a healthy active livestyle and feel that I'm a great candidate for the surgery but my PCP just won't listen. I just asked if I could do a sleep study to rule out sleep apnea. Now I'm worried that if I do have sleep apnea, they'll say I don't have "severe" sleep apnea and not consider that a comorbity that would qualify me for WLS. Did you end up having a sleep study done? What results did you get and where are you now in the process? Hope you've made more progress than me!
