Drunk feeling from eating sugar?
Travelher replied to hectorlopez323's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hmm, no idea. Have not tried sugar or really any high carb food. I did have dumping from drinking a protein shake too fast and felt dizzy but not in a good way. Hot flashes sweaty and nauseaous and gross...never want to feel that again. So kind of like being drunk in a wanting to projectile vomit and curl up in the fetal position kind of way. -
Still thinking about the change.
Travelher replied to dvons's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I revised to rny and am only mad I didn't do it sooner. My pouch is bigger than the usual rny pouch because the band stretches the stomach. Honestly, I'm about 9 weeks post op and feel perfect. All the annoying band issues, gone...I feel like my pouch is the perfect size actually. Can't imagine it being 1/2 this size. Down 46lbs today...can't wait to see where this takes me. -
Tell me this is a joke.... so angry!
Travelher replied to tigraq08's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Omg that is terrible. I'd be devastated! -
If you've lost 4lbs in the last few weeks you are not on a stall. A stall is no weight loss or even a small gain. My stalls usually last over a week, many have stalls for months. Sounds like you are doing great. The only thing you need to change are your expectations. If you were stalling I'd suggest upping water. When I had a stall I just increased my water to 80oz for a few days and it broke. The longer you are out the slower the weight loss will be. same as you approach your goal weight. If I'm down 68 lbs at 4 months out I will throw a party! I find normal weight loss for me looks like a set of stairs on a graph, not a downslope or a cliff.

I think you absolutely could still be going strong at 10 years (just don't get pregnant ) Yes I did get an de-fil during pregnancy. complications started after when i started getting my fills back in. I never got to the same fill level as before the pregnancy and felt terrible! the acid reflux was unbearable it was especially frustrating because part of the marketing was this is perfect for young women because if you get pregnant yada yada. Prior to pregnancy i dropped down to a weight I was happy with and maintained for 4 years (160-170). I got a partial de-fill to frankly survive and basically stayed at my pregnancy weight (which was halfway between my maintenance and high weight). Still had reflux but figured I just needed to live with it. what was weird for me post pregnancy was the daily variability in restriction. in the morning I struggled to get liquid in, at dinner I could eat a 4oz steak with no issues (I would have preferred the opposite to be honest). It never occurred to me that I could get a revision. Then one day I woke up starving and i knew something was wrong. booked a fill appointment and they said the band was empty...that is when i started doing my research and finding out I was not alone and instead of re-banding which i was initially considering, i did a revision. I was at 11 years when it broke. Re: user error: Erosion, slippage and port issues accounted for the majority of re-surgeries so by looking at the studies you can't say user error is the #1 reason. you could make a case that slippage is more likely when there is not enough fill and erosion surgeon error, not user error and port issues...nope. The swedish study gives more detailed data about the actual reasons for revision. Most lap band patients I've seen (anecdotally only) got revisions because of complications, not lack of weight loss. I'm working really hard to get down to my band low weight, unfortunately for me the data shows that revision patients don't get the same weight loss results as first time RNYers...I'm hoping to be one of the exceptions, because of my success with the band, which you just have to work harder at. so I'm used to that. I'm hoping that will translate to me being successful with RNY. I'm halfway to the top of the low weight range i maintained for so many years!

This is an abstract and only reflects a small sample set. It does not go into the causation of the failures such as non compliance with food, follow up appt., taking medications that can cause issues. Without having the full study and understanding the study criteria, rigorous of the analysis, etc this abstract is not scientifically interesting. I read a lot of success stories from people who have the band and are successful. I choose to focus on encouraging everyone to reach their goals. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16 I believe in encouraging people as well but I also believe I gotta be straight up with people who are trying to make a decision like the original post in this. I used to push the lap band back in the day, and I've seen a lot of people (my family members) suffer. Guilt makes you think to do research a bit more. If they already got the band, then I try to encourage people of course. agree. I have to say the number in that study that indicated that more than 33% of patients had late complications which the majority were erosion, slippage and port issues with major surgeries at 21.7%. also each year adds 3-4% to major complication rate. You can't rationalize these are "user error" you can with some of the failure with excess weightloss. It would be interesting to see a study of pregnancy and band complications since mine started with that and I have seen a lot of posts on this and other forums about that. it makes sense, given all your organs moving and shifting around during pregnancy. I don't see these are very great results and I think a lot of surgeons are saying the same thing, out of curiosity I looked to see how this fared against the complication rates with breast implants and it is not far off. Implants complications rates are 27.6%...way higher than what i assumed. just under 26% require re-operation. like the band the chances get higher the older they get. Lots of people get breast implants despite the complication rate and just have them replaced every 10-20 years and are ok with that. so if you view the band in the same way as other implants it carries roughly the same risks. By the way there are other studies that support this data like one done in Sweden which has a 14 year span. they showed a reoperation rate of 30.5% at 14 years. Excess weight loss dropped to 15.6%! after 14 years of follow up. https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jobe/2011/128451/ Now what my Dr says about the sleeve is that so far the results look good, but he's never 100% sold until a procedure has been around for 10 years. That is when he starts having confidence in the results longer term.

Agree with the others. I presume it is working for you now. So continue to work it. Many people are successful with it. Don't worry about anything that you don't need to worry about. It isn't a productive use of your time and energy.

I got my surgery date band to bypass revision
Travelher replied to sunnydeeliteful's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had mine for 11 years. Banded in 2005 -
Weird that you are being pressured to have the sleeve, mine preferred the bypass. But lots of people are successful with the sleeve. My dr is conservative and said he will wait till the sleeve has been around 10 years before he can be confident of long term results . He still does them now, just with a caveat.

Anyone else have a hard visible lump where their port used to be? I assume it is scar tissue but I swear it is a bigger lump than was there when I had a port in there.

October Sleevers, how are you doing?
Travelher replied to The New Kel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a band to bypass revision on October 4th. I'm happy with my progress. have had a couple of stalls which typically last just over a week so I'm used to them now. my weight loss definitely looks like a set of steps. I'm just short of 2 months post op now. I'm doing at least 10,000 steps every day with no exceptions. I am getting all my Protein in most days (still do about 1/2 Protein shake every day) and in the last week have been getting 80 oz of Water in most days (almost half is usually consumed in the evenings after dinner). I haven't found a food yet that doesn't work (steak is awesome) but i find it has to be freshly cooked, dryer leftover meat is pretty much a no go. I'm sticking to a pretty low carb diet which is i think a big contributor to my loss so far, which has been faster than I typically experience. hoping to be at my goal by summer, but we'll see what my body puts up with. I started as a size 18 and just wearing size 16 jeans today. looking forward to onderland when i should drop into a size 14 pant. already fitting into my size 14 dresses. I've been tracking so here are my stats: 2 week pre-op diet 16 lbs lost 1st month post-op just over 16 lbs lost 2nd month post-op likely to be 14 lbs lost that is a total of almost 46lbs as of today. pre-op 260, sw 244, current weight 214.6 -
Normal-Fat: is it dangerous to stop being invisible?
Travelher replied to JupiterinVirgo's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I can relate, when i was young i attracted a lot of attention from the wrong kind of men. I have a naturally curvy body, so at a normal weight I got a lot of attention for my "assets" it was very threatening for the most part. that went away, and I was, frankly more comfortable at a heavier weight (overweight, not obese). i am married now, and older so it would not be an issue now, but I understand the feeling. I think you need to seek professional help to work through those feelings because they will get in the way of your success and health. when it comes to dating I took my time and I found I could pretty quickly tell the "nice guy" from the player. it took me a long time to find my husband but I'm glad I was cautious and selective because I found a keeper, and I'm proud that i didn't settle for anything less. You deserve the best, you deserve happiness, security and to know you are awesome as you are. If you don't realize and internalize it you will attract the types of people who can recognize self-esteem issues and will exploit them. What i would give to be able to go back in time and kick my 20 year old butt. -

Anyone switched from VSG to RNY last minute?
Travelher replied to GoingRogue's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I didn't have a last minute switch, but went into mine not knowing which I'd end up with. I had a revision, dr said if there Is too much scarring I will do a sleeve, if it is fine, a rny. I wanted an rny. I found out when I woke up in recovery -
You can do this. You've already made a big step for your health by leaving an abusive relationship. That is huge!!!! Time to continue to focus and take care of yourself. You are going through a grieving process and that's ok. Just don't do it at the expense of your health. You are not alone! I'm glad this board has been a way to cope and manage. You may want to find a professional to talk to and help you through this transition.

try one thing at a time. obviously soft things like Beans go down easier. chew, chew, chew. if you are trying meat, make sure it is moist (crockpot style)avoid fibrous things at the beginning (celery etc), i would avoid nuts at the outset.

based on what i've seen the mini almost looks like a sleeve/bypass combo. I have a bypass, so original stomach is still there. no, I wouldn't know it. feel nothing.

Questions, 7 days until surgery
Travelher replied to ramsey2008's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
try it. I suggest you list out the ones you have tried and didn't like and people will pipe in with alternatives. I mostly mixed in Protein with Soups etc. I was done with the shakes after my pre-op diet. I only just started them again because I found one i didn't mind with some additives. -
I'm another former band revision (to rny) due to complications/breakage. there may be a possibility with complications after any surgery but with the band it is pretty high (especially when you look 5-10+ years out). it worked for me, then complications and it eventually broke. someone on another post said you need to look at it like you would breast implants. they need to be replaced every 10-15 years because it is a piece of equipment and they don't last forever. Mine lasted 11 years. others on here have some that are even older than that and still working. i am one of the lucky people who did not have heavy scar tissue or erosion that might prevent a revision or make it more risky.
