    How do a choose a surgeon ?

having epilepsy would definitely make you a risk but I'm sure it will depend how well controlled it is and they will want clearance from your neurologist. I'm not sure if a colonoscopy will count for much in knowing how you respond to anesthesia because most of the time, they use a light kind of anesthetic called conscious sedation..you don't remember what happened buy you aren't completely under either. Although it's good you did well with that too. I hope you get your surgery too. Technology is really advanced now but risk is hard for some to take on. Hopefully tgey will see the weight problem as riskier then your epilepsy.

Hate sugar free stuff. What do I do?

It's much easier to accomplish this once you're able to eat more and get enough Protein from foods alone. That's not possible for most for a while. I need to supplement. Protein shakes or powder are required. How do you plan to get thru that stage eating only real foods? I'm not being snarky - I'm truly wondering how it can be done?that's what I was thinking to which was why I suggested the stevia sweetened protein powders but I believe unflavored Protein Powder like Isopure whey isolate has no sugar or sweeteners in it but so far, I personally think it taste horrible in at least tomato soup...

    How do a choose a surgeon ?

four ducklings wow! Most surgeons who are accredited have awesome stats. Complications can always happen of course but obesity can kill you too. So can driving a car...or crossing a street.. . I guess surgery just puts it in our faces because it's new territory for many of us, you sign your life away on forms and everyone tells you horrible stories! I've had general anesthesia anniversary if times and many procedures and a couple if surgeries. It's always a bit scary but I do remind myself if what I started out saying... obesity comorbidities are deadly, and life activities can kill you too so that might help you too I did ask my surgeon how many patients he has lost on the table and it was zero in many years and a small handful from drastic complications like pulmonary embolism often bc people feel symptoms and don't seem medical attention until it's too late! They do a lot to prevent clots, infection, etc these days...

I just realized you said you got a surgery date not the surgery itself yet!! Sorry! Congratulations!!! I've been told for some unknown reason these surgeries often reset and really help reduce symptoms of autoimmune disease so maybe that will happen for you too

    Stress ????

How likely is a leak to occur with second hand smoke?? Did you ask your surgeon this or did you just hear this ? It makes sense to me that it could happen to smokers and second hand smoke definitely is not good but it's still not a direct insult to your insides so I'm just wondering how great the risk really is especially when leaks are also relatively rare as well. You could ask your mom one more time if she could please at least go outside and smoke whike you're healing because you don't want to end up ii. The hospital or having more surgery again dye to her smoking!! A tiny guilt trip!! If she doesn't cooperate and your surgeon feels tge risk is that great or you're that fearful, maybe it's best to stay with a friend for awhile. As for your child...I always say kids are quite resilient especially when they are kept in the loop. They want their parents , to be with them and to be loved. It might be fun to go spend sometime with mom at another friends house unless you have the kind of child that is real stuck in a specific routine, doesn't like to sleep away from home and so on. That might be a problem but otherwise, it might be good for every one. How likely is a leak to occur with second hand smoke?? Did you ask your surgeon this or did you just hear this ? I got past the hungry stage, THANK GOD

I would ask your nut about this bc my plan includes everything from liquids to purees. I can't imagine what would be wrong with sugar free jello . I can't eat it but I can make my own with plain gellitain , stevia and true lime or lemon!! I haven't tried to yet but plan to! Anyways, if you love jello and it's not on the menu, definitely ask!

I got past the hungry stage, THANK GOD

Man I'm glad to read this, I just hit puree stage and I've been hungry all of the time too. Even at this stage, it's fortunately improving but not satisfactory. I eat a scrambled egg in the morning and I'm stuffed before finishing it but in one hour, I. Easy for food. If I eat Soup, I can also eat a yogurt.. or if I eat s tuns pouch. I need something else too like cottage cheese and then I freak out thinking omg, I'm eating to much food. The scale isn't moving bc I'm eating to much. When I walk around for exercise. Omg I'm hungry... I think it's the lack of carbs I'm not used to?? And yet not enough Protein bc not at the stage yet So far, I can eat anything too ...not helping! St night i feel hungry and maybe it's emotionally driven buy i feel my stomach... I often have a yogurt Popsicles are my lifesaver!! Anyways. I was thinking of posting about this but worried about being judged so I feel relieved to have discovered this thread

    How do a choose a surgeon ?

Yeh, I went with a bariatric center of excellence surgeon and hospital as well, the clinic has other accreditations too and two surgeons, two psychologist. Two nutritionist, a endocrinologist, several nurse practitioners, surgery coordinator and more. I liked both surgeons and attended support group and orientation ran by both ig them and settled on one based on years of experience. Personality characteristics and my intuition. They both had grand stats. It is a difficult decision but try not to get extremely anxious over it.

maybe you need to talk to a social worker or insurance brokers perhaps for better guidance because even state medicaid pays for WLS these days!!

that's so cool you grow it! I've been thinking about buying a plant but was wondering how to use it in food, just throw it in the good processor and sprinkle? Lolol when I tried the leaf, I was surprised that I could still tge bitterness! That's my angst with stevia. But my g6 sport vanilla powder us made with it and it's yummy with no bitterness yay! I'm a whole foods believer too but obviously in fat and I mostly ate whole foods before so anything good can be bad as you said..a gateway! I like that.

    Health Insurance

I have blue shield and they cover most of it but you do have to have six months of nutrition counseling and stuff prior which they pay for. I have a ppo so I don't know if that makes a difference or not and I bought it through a broker. I don't recall if there were particular requirements such as having a comorbidities etc

    Hello again....

I'm so impressed with how well you are doing and getting your B A too despite tremendous stress!! Congratulations. I hope tge meds help the depression.. therapy has always helped me. Being a caregiver is incredibly hard work especially on females because they don't get much social gratitude for it. There's actual research on this!! Anyways, hang tough!

    I survived!

Congratulations!! The gas pain was the worst for me and I felt it in my chest and under my ribs!! Walking helped loads and pain meds.!! Once I got to full liquids I got lots of liquid savory Soups like tomato red pepper, carrot ginger, creamy corn and roasted red peppers, butternut squash, etc mostly the imagine brand bc they are low to non fat and taste great. I added fage Greek plain yogurt for more Protein and creaminess. Some ppl cant handle thickness early on but if you can, those are sone of my suggestions. Happy recovering

    Advice

I was given colace stool softener, then added miralax for greater issues and if that still didn't work, was told to use benefiber but to be very slow and use small doses of that and make sure you're drinking lots of liquids, especially Water to keep things moving... If you take opioid pain medication still from surgery or anything else, that can really gum you up. This is my issue so I'm also taking a medicine for OIC - opioid induced constipation Good fortune

Hate sugar free stuff. What do I do?

yes, I'm aware that the pancreas still produces insulin in reaction to anything sugar or sugar like. I was merely responding to the posters response that they were using stevia but stopped bc they didn't want anything artificial or fake ... And, for me since I'm also allergic to artificial sweeteners, I'm pleased to have Protein powder flavors sweetened with stevia for variety. So far, tge unflavored Isopure experience is nasty! Also, stevia is so potent, you need very small amounts of it so that is probably a positive thing but that's just a opinion not necessarily a fact lol The problem with this logic is that simply coming from a plant and thus not being artificial doesn't necessarily mean we should be filling up on it. Sugar comes from a plant, too. Splenda is simply a modified sucrose molecule, thus it is technically plant based as well. Cocaine is made from cocoa leaves, heroin is made from poppy seeds and alcohol will form in the bottom of your trash can if it's left out long enough with any plant based material in it. Eating sweet foods, regardless of how abd whybthey are sweet causes cravings for sweet foods. Diet Coke contains no sugar, yet it promotes a response from your pancreas similar to regular Coke. Your brain perceives sweetness and prepares for an onslaught of sugar, even if there is none.

Hate sugar free stuff. What do I do?

although the poster said hating, it seemed like to me, they are allergic to artificial sweeteners or get adverse reactions from them like me.... I was concerned about this as well before my surgery bc the pre op diet, I ended up in urgent care after repeated episodes of diarrhea and vomiting which was linked to the intake of splenda and truvia. The only thing I don't have issue with is stevia bc it's not artificial but its a sweetener so it works out for getting my protein powder!

Stevia is not artificial...it's a plant...it comes from a plant..I've actually tasted the sweet leaf from a stevia plant. It is not a chemical or artificial

    Catheter question?

Ive had major surgery twice involving a cath. I fear them too. I had a cath with my sleeve surgery and I actually wasn't expecting it. But I was glad in the end because I was in considerable pain despite strong pain medication and getting in and out if bed to potty would have been a nightmare!!! They inserted it when I was anesthetized in these surgeries and with the sleeve, they removed it discreetly and without discomfort the following morning. I'm sure, like everyone else said, you can discuss your fear with the surgeon or surgical nurse and make a plan in advance

    Harder than I thought....

I had my surgery the 24th of last month and the two days at the hospital were pretty dang hard and uncomfortable. I'm doing really well considering all things but the scale isn't moving and that's scaring me.
  23. I'm about two weeks out or three ? Anyways I'm getting pretty much 80 or more with food in the puree stage and one power house protein shake in skim milk and Greek yogurt... pow. Breakfast over 40 grams of protein
