Preparation and Recovery
shoodle72 replied to Hiccup's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In Australia our public health (Medicare) doesn't cover this type of surgery at all. You need top cover Private cover to have the surgery. There is also a gap payment for my surgeon which is $3900. This covers my anaesthetist, the surgeon's assistant and 3 years follow with the surgeon and dietitian. Most of the other surgeons in Sydney charge a gap fee of at least $5000 and also charge an additional $1000 for the anaesthetist's fees. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

In Australia, they won't let you drive for 7-10 days post op. Also have to be picked up from the hospital into the care of a 'responsible' person. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Negative comments - not "fat enough"?

My BMI is 51. My surgeon will do gastric sleeve surgery on patients aged between 18 to 65 years. BMI must be over 35 unless the patient is pre-diabetic and then he will operate on BMI greater than 30. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

I'm a nurse and the risks with immobility are Pulmonary Emboli (clots in the lungs) and Deep Vein Thrombosis (clots in your legs). People in wheelchairs have surgeries everyday. As for clot prevention, drugs such as Enoxaparin (Clexane) and Heparin injections are routinely given to patients pre and post operatively. As for gas dissipation, even sitting up in the wheelchair or in an armchair would assist with this. There must be another reason. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I have insurance. I have to pay $3900 on top of my insurance as I'm in Australia. Without my insurance the surgery costs about $20,000. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

In my situation I also have the money to pay. I have had to have a Barium swallow test, an upper abdominal ultrasound and have to have 2 weeks of Optifast liquid diet before surgery. Also have to meet with the dietitian and a psychologist prior too. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I will be off work for 3 weeks. I'm scheduled for 21st October 2016. Concerned friends ... Do you really want to do this?

My gastric sleeve surgery is scheduled for 21st October 2016. I am very excited and feel really prepared after lots of reading over the last 18 months. My Endocrinologist recommended it last year but I wasn't ready to take the step and at that stage I wasn't accepting the need for this surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
