BC/BS Why are people paying out of pocket ?

From what I've read and the experience with my insurance (anthem BCBS) BCBS seems to be the most pain in the ass company out there to deal with. Making you jump through all kinds of hoops then using any excuse they can to deny if possible. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Anthem BC of CA Shenanigans

Hope this gets resolved! Based on these boards it seems like anthem BCBS is a real pain in the ass I have it too Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  9. My Drs office told me not to worry, they approve you based on your start weight. The 6 mos is more to show compliance than anything else. As long as you lose some weight wou should be fine Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Denied for Revison BCBSIL

They don't pay for revisions at BCBS. They consider them "experimental". Doesn't matter, if you've already had a surgery then they won't do it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Anthem BCBS NC

I wasn't quite at the weight requirement and I didn't have any comorbid conditions (pre diabetes and PCOS but they didn't count those) I was under 40 for my bmi Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Sticker shock . . .

Cost is usually $5000 ish after insurance. But that sounds about right. The surgery itself is $25000 ish then you have to pay for the anesthesiologist and the hospital stay Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Anthem BCBS Appeal

Unfortunately if they deem it not medically necessary, especially a revision, they won't approve. I'm sorry I went through this 2 years ago. They won't cover 2 procedures at all. It's listed under the qualifications for the surgery Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. BCBS doesn't approve any revisions as they consider them "not medically necessary" and "experimental". Legally I believe you are allowed 3 appeals Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Protein drinks before surgery

You can have Isopure but I would think no shakes Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Thank you God!

No I'm not approved, BUT I found a Protein that I like!! People who have issues with taste and aftertaste then try the pre made Premier Protein shakes! The do have that smell. BUT they don't taste like it! Not one bit!! Thank god!! I've tried so many things and I was getting worried that I wouldn't be able to do the pre op diet because I can't stand protein shakes!! The premier ones aren't frothy either!! If you have issues then please try these! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. so i had hope that the unjury chicken Soup and unflavored Protein powder would work for me. no such luck... i almost threw up. i hate it... its so nasty i think i am going to be fine post op because i should be able to tolerate just an oz at a time but I'm most worried about the pre op diet. my surgeon requires 1-2 weeks doing a modified diet (2 shakes, 2 Protein Bars or crisps and one meal that is high protein high in veggies and low fat low carbs.) then a week on Protein Shakes only. its the week only on protein shakes that i am worried about. i think ill be able to tolerate the modified diet but only the shakes.... thats another story. i don't know if ill even be able to tolerate that much Isopure it leaves a weird film in your mouth. help i don't know what to do!

Working out during Pre Op diet

Just be careful since you are on extremely low calories so you don't want to pass out or anything. I'd probably pass on the working out unless it's just walking Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    sleep apnea diagnosed after denial

as sad as i am to say this it seems like they would deny because of the time frame of the supervised diet. id just wait and resubmit again after you finish the new diet in 2 months
  21. Marissa.Ann.C

    DENIED!

i am so sorry this happened to you! I would look up the policy online then call and read it to them and demand to know how you were denied when you met the qualifications. peer to peer review won't do anything if they are saying you don't meet the qualifications when you already do. i know this post is from a while ago... how did things work out?

    Starving

hang in there! good luck! hope everything goes well!!

    Denied :(

i have been there. 2 years ago when i tried the first time my bmi was 37ish and i was borderline for high cholesterol, diabetes, and everything else was negative. i also have severe GERD and PCOS but apparently that doesn't matter. i have a VERY high family history for heart disease (heart attacks and heart failure), high cholesterol, and diabetes. still denied. i appealed, still denied. surgeon appealed, still denied. i gave up. now 2 years later and 20-30 lbs heavier my insurance requires a 6 month supervised diet and my bmi is almost 44. as horrible as this sounds, it seems to me like your only options are to switch insurance companies or to gain weight.

    2 week pre op diet

it honestly depends on the surgeon but i am surprised they are not letting you have any kind of protein! that doesn't seem right. my surgeon does a modified diet for 1-2 weeks (2 shakes, 2 bars, and 1 low fat low carb high Protein meal) then a liquid diet for a week before where you are only allowed Water, SF liquids and shakes.

    Breaking habits before surgery

you don't have to drink plain water post or pre op. you can add any flavor crystal light, mio, dasani drops, lemon juice, etc. as long as you are getting in your fluids and what you are adding is sugar free then go for it! personally i like diluting juice. it doesn't taste as fake as some of the sugar free options out there. you will have to use diet juice post op (like diet cranberry and diet apple) but i usually try to dilute by half and i can't even tolerate undiluted juices now. they are too sweet
