    No Pre-OP Diet

My doctor did not require a pre-op diet and I suffered no complications related to the liver etc. I was concerned but am about 2 weeks post op and feeling great. Every doctor is different in his/her approach to this surgery. Follow your physician's guidelines for he/she has considered you as an individual case with individual needs. Wishing you the very best! 2. Nana, I can identify with your sentiment of being neither scared or excited as I approached surgery. I had tried everything else for so many years, I was just numb. I was banded April 28. I am about 2 weeks post op and feeling great! My husband, once skeptical of the procedure, has turned out to be my biggest support. He is also morbidly obese and has begun the process toward lapband surgery. I wish you the very best as you move toward a healthier you. Stay with this support board. I have learned so much and know that you are not alone.

    How long will it take?

Moe, Losing weight is very personal and the process takes as long as it takes. That means that your weight should be no ones elses concern except your own. Are you seeking surgery to save your job? Losing the jerks on the job usually takes no longer than a 2 week notice. That's pretty good turn around time in my book! Much success to you as move toward a healthier you.:smile2: Tammygirl

    African American Bandsters?

You may consider contacting African American health professional organizations such as the National Black Nurses Association, National Medical Association, Chi Eta Phi, etc. Another resource may be schools of nursing or medicine at historically black colleges/universities. Good Luck! Tammygirl
  5. Welcome to Bandlandia! So glad to hear of your positive experience. I was banded in Augusta, GA 4/28 and also had a good experience. Wishing you the very best recovery as you move forward to better health! Tammygirl:thumbup:

    ChirstyC

Hi Christy! I have tried unjury and love it! My favorite flavors are the chocolate and vanilla. Tastes like a good milkshake! I was banded 4/28. Congrats to you!
  7. I am off Nexium. I have not taken my BP med for over a week due to a sustained low BP.
  8. Hi bluefairy,

My surgeon is considered by :thumbup:United to be a provider of choice. The case manager let me know that the reputation of the surgeon, the reputation of the hospital in question is figured into the decision. Disorganized medical practices turn off insurance companies because they tend not to follow through. So pay attention to your doc and how the office runs. Also, the supporting documents submitted by the surgeon mattered too. Fortunately, I was working with a first class operation.

My humble opinion to you would be to first select a doctor who is supportive of you having surgery. Case managers quickly pick up on docs who are not convinced that this is the best move for the patient. Think about it, if the doc is uncertain, why should they pay for it? Next select the best surgeon with priviledges in the best hospital your area offers. Insurance is more apt to pay if they feel the patient is likely to have a successful outcome. Lastly, stay on top of the process. Keep your appts, turn in accurate paperwork on time, communicate with your doc's office weekly to ensure that needed information has been sent to the insurance company in a timely matter. Keep good records. Hope this is helpful information for you.

    Good Luck to you!

  9. Today was my first day back at work. I have a private office and spent much of the day erupting in gas everywhich way:eek: I am 7 days post op on a full liquid diet. I stayed in my office, afraid of erupting in public. Any suggestions? Thanks. Tammygirl

    Great Approval Story

I had a similiar experience with UnitedHealth. My nurse case manager shared with me that she and several of the other case managers had had the surgery. That company was more than supportative during the approval process and the approval came through in less than two weeks. Wishing you the best!
  11. I have sleep apnea and have had 4 surgeries with no respiratory complications. The anesthesiology department is trained to handle sleep apnea patients. Is it possible your physician has other concerns about your health and ability to be a good candidate for surgery? Whatever the case, it can not hurt to seek a second opinion. Good Luck
  12. Thank you all! It's good to know that I am not alone in this and to receive assurance that it gets better. I was able to attend a meeting today at work SILENTLY! It was much better today. I am looking forward to continued wellness! Thanks for all the suggestions!

    meds?

Glad you mentioned the reflux, Mbanja. I found that out the hard way:eek:. After taking my meds, I have evacuated the meds from the small pouch with a couple of ounces of fluid or so. This has virtually eliminated the gastric discomfort from my meds. I like the idea of the compound pharmacy morning sun spoke about. I think I will follow up on that one. Thanks!

    Banded on 4/28/08

Congratulations on taking a step toward wholeness, Metcalf! I have found nonstrenous walking helpful in relieving discomfort! Perhaps you might try sugar free Jello and popsicles. They come in lots of nice flavors. I have also learned to combine my flavors in Protein drinks for a switch. A mixture of chocolate and vanilla is a favorite of mine. I also enjoy soft sugar free pudding in a variety of flavors. :shades_smile:My husband has started making my broth from scratch using fresh vegatables and meat. He then strains off the solids and serves it. YUM! If all else fails, your doc's staff should have plenty of ideas. This board also has loads of ideas too. Just check with your doc to make sure they are OK for you. Lastly, hang in there! According to the oldtimers, the best is yet to come! Great health to you! Tammygirl

    meds?

Hi Zoommomma, I am newly banded and dealing with medication delivery issues also. I am working very closely with my doctors on this. I have found some of my meds can be crushed, some had to discontinued and replaced with new ones, and some were represcribed in liquid form. Please consult your prescribing docs, they can help you through this.

    Banded on 4/28/08

Hello ET and others, I was banded on the 28th also. I am dealing with the belching also. I am so glad you posted. My doc recommends plenty of fluids to help with elimination and I have found that helpful. I am confident that I have made the right decision and know that this initial stage will pass. I dealt with some guilt until my husband pointed out to me that morbid obesity is an illness and when you are sick, you just don't sit down and be content to stay sick. You avail yourself to available treatment. For me, this is the treatment of last resort. I have tried everything else. I am thankful for this board and for all of you. Most of all, I am grateful that this treatment even exsists. A smooth recovery to all of us newbies, thanks to the oldtimers, and good health for all:smile:
  20. Thanks 2BFree! Tammygirl
  21. Hi Whip! Tammygirl here again! Well I did it! I was banded on April 28 and came home the next day. I am a little sore, but feel great. I am not scared anymore. I know I have done something positive for my health and I am excited! Take care, Whip! I wish you the very best!
  22. Dperson, Please consider seeking a second opinion from another physician. If that physician concurs that surgery would be good for you, transfer your care and medical records to him/her. He/She will write your recommendation and support you through the process. Be sure to send your before and after pictures to your old physician:lol:! Wishing you the very best! Tammygirl:wink_smile:

    learning to do fills

Hi Pammie! I am a registered nurse in the states and therefore can not speak to the limits of nursing practice in England. (I am assuming that as a midwife you are also a nurse.) You may wish to contact your national professional nursing association and inquire as to whether this fits within the scope of nursing practice before moving forward. They may also be able to advise you on other nurses who may already perform this procedure. In the states, nurses may fill and unfill the port under the order of the physician. Good Luck in your endeavor! Tammygirl
