  1. I started my career as a high school math teacher. During my many diets, I was always pretty open with the kids about what I was doing. First, they watched me shrink, and second, I, too, liked to be open and real with them since at that age, they were pretty good about figuring out what was going on anyway. It sounds like you are a pretty awesome teacher. I have an unfulfilled dream of teaching at a small school (specifically the elementary school I went to growing up), but small town living just wouldn't have worked for me as an adult. I left the classroom many years ago when I went to grad school, but I work with and around teachers and students every day in my publishing work. Best wishes as you continue your journey!

    Rice?

On my plan, it says to avoid it. Like Pasta, it will expand and make you miserable without offering much in the way of nutrition. That being said, there are a lot of different plans and opinions. Personally, I have to stay away from carbs, so it you are really carb sensitive, I'd take a pass on it.

    My first bad episode!

Yikes! Scrambled eggs will be my first "real" food, and they are on deck for October 27 which is the beginning of Week 4. (October 20 brings cottage cheese and well cooked zucchini and green Beans -- but they are not in the same league with eggs in my opinion). My mind wondered how I might do with them at 12 days post-op, so you have certainly answered that question for me. I hope you're feeling better.

    Getting in Protein

120 g of Protein is a lot, especially at two weeks out. My plan calls for 40-50 g right now, and I am getting a little over 50 every day. My nutritionist is asking me to top out at 80 g when I finish moving through the stages. I think that 100 g is probably more appropriate, but we'll see when the time comes. (My nutritionist and my plan are both very conservative.) As a matter of reference, during my six-month pre-op low carb/high protein diet, I generally came in between 100-120 g of protein per day, but it was usually below 120 g. And that was having eggs and bacon at Breakfast, a premier Protein shake at lunch, and a dinner anchored by 6-8 oz of some kind of meat.
  8. My dad had the bypass in 2005; my mom had the sleeve in 2013; my brother had the lap-band in 2014. My family could be some kind of poster family for bariatric surgery, so obviously, they have been super supportive. At work, 2/3 of my team battles their weight and someone is on some focused diet plan almost all of the time. They have all been super supportive, too. (And in fact, once I go back from medical leave and start traveling again where I see them, I imagine one of my teammates will talk to me about my experience and maybe move in the direction of surgery.) My friends, too, have been super supportive. I have battled my weight all my life, but throughout my 20s, I kept in pretty much in check. (As in once it got over a certain number, I'd diet and rein it back in.) But in my 30s, it all went to pot and I hit 397 last February/March. They were all so concerned, so I think they were just relieved that I was going to do something about it finally. I did get some "are you sure's," but they were completely out of love and concern. And my partner is a rock. He has lost 80 pounds as I have lost 115. I'm so proud of him. He supports me in every way. We are both determined to get back to where we were when we started dating almost 8 years ago. It is amazing what getting happy, love, getting older, and a slowing down metabolism (that wasn't that great to start with) will do to your weight over time...
  9. My plan allows for a ripe banana beginning Day 15 post-op. (They have too many carbs for me, so I'm going to stay away, but they are on the plan...)
  10. I did a low carb diet for six months pre-op (and lost 99 pounds by surgery day), so I am continuing to keep my carbs below 20 even as I progress through these stages (clear liquids, full liquids, purees, soft, etc.). The downside in that is that there are often limited low/no carb options early on. For instance, I am really on full liquids from Day 10 until Day 21 because all of the new items that you can have at Day 14 are full of carbs (no sugar applesauce, ripe banana, cream of wheat, oatmeal, etc.). My plan is to go right back to my meat and non-starchy vegetables diet with the help of the sleeve's restriction once my new tummy can tolerate those things. This approach is obviously not for everyone, but it has worked wonders for me. Carbs are my addiction and enemy, and I am going to have to minimize them as much as possible for the rest of my life. I'm sure you'll get some other helpful suggestions from other posters, but I'd recommend that you ask your nutritionist as well. Good luck!

Does it make me a horrible wife

I have seen tons of those. We actually met thru the medifast diet website, so losing weight together (and gaining weight together) has always been a part of our relationship. I am not trying to be braggy... i just know that if asked me for as many favors as he is offering i would be getting irratated. I am also kinda worried that he is setting a high bar, one that i will be too cranky to reach when its his turn. I can understand that. Jason and I both try to be as supportive of each other as possible during "sick" situations, but I think we both always generally fall a little short and feel guilty about it. It's just a cycle, I suppose...

Does it make me a horrible wife

This thread is in stark contrast to the dozens of my husband/wife/partner/boyfriend/girlfriend/etc. isn't being supportive threads. Let him be there for you. It seems pretty awesome that he cares so much and wants to support you as much as he can. My partner has been pretty great through the whole thing, but I also know from 8 years together that he and I make terrible nurses sometimes. Consequently, I brought my Mom and Dad in for a week post-op. No one takes care of you better than your mama does!!

    New to Bariatric Pal

Thank you. I hope I can continue on like this. I know that the weight loss will eventually slow obviously but as long as it keeps going in the right direction I am happy. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App That's a good attitude. I lost 99 pounds pre-op, and I have lost another 16 pounds in the 12 days since my surgery on September 28. That's a little over a pound a day. I know it won't continue at this rate forever, but I am going to enjoy it while it lasts! Eventually, it will probably settle back into the 3ish pounds a week that it was during my pre-op diet.
  14. People have posted about all kinds of different post-op plans. While they all have common characteristics (liquids, purees, soft foods, etc.), they are all different in terms of times. I would echo what the others have said about following your surgeon's plan. My plan seems to be among the most conservative that I have read about (even full liquids and packaged Protein shakes didn't begin until Day 10), but I'm going to follow it because that is what I have been asked to do. Good luck!

    Please help any suggestions?!

The best thing you can go is GET STARTED NOW! Pick a way of eating that involves foods you like and that you think you can stick with for an extended period of time that will help you reduce calories and lose weight. I chose low carb/high protein/high healthy fat (largely because that is how I knew I would have to eat post-op after the transition and healing period). I lost 99 pounds during that time before the surgery. It has made ALL the difference in the world for me. I am convinced that I have responded to the surgery and its requirements much better because I took the time to lose all the weight pre-op. (And I have lost 16 pounds in the 12 days since my surgery on top of that.) Good luck as you continue your journey!

    How did you handle this

You need to try to start re-establishing your relationship with food BEFORE you have the surgery. And part of that is NOT cutting yourself off from social events because of food and drink. Go. See people. Have fun. And either eat something that will work with your current eating plan, or eat before/after you go and just not have something there. It won't be the end of the world if you don't eat, and people that care about you won't care about the fact that you are not eating. I lost 99 pounds during my six-month insurance-required pre-op diet program. Nothing prepared me to deal with the physical and mental demands of surgery more than that. I ate out all the time. I just ate what my eating plan would allow (at the time, low carb/high protein/high healthy fat). Now that I am post-op, I am still on liquids. Last night, my partner and I met up with an old friend over on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We went to dinner. They ate steamed seafood. I drank a Premier Protein shake. We had an amazing time. My recommendation is to take this six week diet you have to do and make the most of it. Trust me, the mental part of the entire thing is the most difficult. Also, I want to echo what the others have said regarding your husband's weight situation. Be patient with him. Chances are once you get going, he'll get on the train, too. My partner has lost over 80 pounds in the time that I have lost 114 pounds. Best wishes to you!

    No longer answering these questions:

I read and comment on frequent-flyer forum (Flyertalk) since I travel so much for work. On there (at least on the Delta forum), people are direct verging on rude telling people to use the search feature when they ask routine questions or start threads with topics that have been discussed and discussed and discussed. While I do find the way some people act on there off-putting sometimes, you don't see nearly as many of the same old thread topics on there like you do on here. I have only been around here for a short time, but even in that time, I have developed similar feelings to those that have been expressed in this thread. For me, it isn't as much the posting about things that you could find through a simple search, it is more about the sheer unprepared nature of SO many people who have had (or will be having) this surgery. I get that I am a bit of a "bariatric goody-two-shoes." I am going to do exactly what my doctor and his staff have told me to because I am going to be successful and healthy and no food or drink is worth more to me than that. I also get that everyone doesn't have that much drive in them, and I also get that food addiction is real, scary, and daunting. But come on, all of these posts about "when I can have XYZ?" or talking about "cheating" on pre-op diets or post-op diets signals really quick that A LOT of people on this forum are ill-prepared to embrace this life change or never really intended to change in the first place. And they will be the very people later on who say this doesn't work. Yes, people need a place to vent, and yes, people need to be treated with compassion, but they also need a kick in the ass sometimes and a serious reality check. Thankfully, we have some bad-ass vets like LipstickLady and Bufflehead (among others) who always keep it real.
  23. I can have string cheese beginning Week 4 post-op. My nutritionist gave me a list of items to pretty much avoid forever and Pasta was on that list. I knew that going into this. You can probably try having it several months out, but it expands, and just a little bit of it will likely make you miserable and give you little in the way of Protein or nutritional value.
