My doctor suggest I not weigh myself until my two-week post-op so I didn't. I was down about 15lbs when I went in to see him though.

In our main bariatric class our nutritionist said the focus was on moving more, but my doctor wanted exercise. I established my exercise routine before surgery, so I'm just picking up where I left off...but I think the most important thing to do is find ways to be active that you enjoy. If you like dancing, take some classes. If you like to swim, once you're healed, hit the pool. If you like what you're doing, you're more likely to stick with it.

Exercising after surgery
maredarlin replied to becmay85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As mentioned above, it's something to discuss with your surgeon. At my two-week follow up, I was cleared to all exercise as long as I kept any lifting to ten pounds (which despite working out until the day before surgery, was plenty at first on my muscles anyway). -
Question for hiatal hernia people
maredarlin replied to Ragdollorchid's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a hernia fixed and I started to have a little bit of pain about day three. I just used a heating pad and it seemed to help. Feel better soon! -
How Many Calories Were You Taking in Around 7-8 Weeks?
maredarlin replied to kharenzhee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It could be your nutritionist wants you at that level because of your level of exercise and activity, depending on how many calories your burning a day. -
Check the Protein you're trying to use too. I had such trouble with the shakes and it turned out that I was having trouble with the milk in everything. Once I cut out the milk, I was able to handle things a lot better. But it's also possible your body just wasn't ready to move to full liquids yet. When my doctor approved me for puree recently, he said, "I'm okaying it, but your body might not, so take it slow." Good luck!

I'm a south Jersey girl in Camden County. Almost four weeks out from my surgery at Virtua Hospital and can't really complain.

week 2 - trouble getting in protein
maredarlin posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone. I'm ten days out since my surgery and I'm on the full liquid diet. My issue is that I'm having real trouble getting in my Protein. My nutritionist info says I should be at 60-70 during this phase and I'm at 40 if I'm lucky. I've tried a bunch of Protein shakes. I've tried blending, I've tried the pre-made and they just make me feel filled up after two small sips. I've been able to handle the New whey Liquid Protein if I Water it down with a lot of water...but my nutritionist wants me moving away from that to the protein powder/shakes as I progress. Weirdly, I can handle 1/2 a pudding cup or 1/2 greek yogurt at a time, so I do add unflavored protein to that, but I'm just not getting in the shakes on my meal plan I'm supposed and I don't know what else to try. It's not about taste either...it's just about the actually being able to drink it. -
2nd Week Food Options
maredarlin replied to NewAdventure2016's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been struggling to get my Protein in so they told me to eat some Oikos Triple yogurt and add unflavored protein. Still can't eat much, but I'm getting more in. A friend, who had the surgery awhile ago, also gave me some of the nectar protein that you can just add to drinks. I have the lemon-flavored one. I use some of that and add a little crystal light to a Water bottle. -

Hi everyone! I'm a week out and I'm starting to feel a lot better. yesterday I was able to get in two 1-mile walks. Doing good with my Water, but struggling with Protein. My other main issue is sleep. After the first few days where I was groggy and tired all the time, now I'm just not tired at all. i haven't been falling asleep until almost 1 in the morning and then I'm up at eight. I need to get this fixed before I return to work on Thursday (if all goes well) -

When I went to my pre-op class this past Wednesday with one of the nurses, I was told that I would be given a tray with an assortment of liquids - one Water, one liquid Protein, one broth, and one Jell-o...each 4oz. and I would need to slowly go through each of those. She said I'll also be doing a lot of walking, but that I had read and heard from others. Last year I had started changing my living habits to lose weight while I researched weight loss surgery, so I went into my appointment with the surgeon down about fifty pounds and then since April I've lost about thirty more (20 of it was this two week period before surgery). Anyway, i report to the hospital tomorrow morning at 10am. -

I had a few moments last night where I was like, "is it too late to cancel? am I sure I should do this?" Of course I am, but I'm freaking out slightly and surgery is always slightly scary. I'm also excited and ready (especially after these two weeks pre-op). I realize I'll have more emotional moments in the next few weeks, but I'm ready. went to store tonight to pick up some things to have at home when I get back from the hospital. Bought myself two new books and did a bunch of laundry. Tomorrow I was told i could have one Protein shake early morning, but then it was just clear liquids until 10pm. Tomorrow will be a fun birthday. How about you? You ready for this thing? -

Some pre-op advice :)
maredarlin replied to Alexandra85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for sharing your experiences. My surgery is on Monday and I'm both excited and terrified. I've been very good about sticking to my pre-op diet. First four days were the hardest, but I'm just trying to focus on the good and why. -
Having to lose 14-20lbs before surgery
maredarlin replied to BeautifulSharifah's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second the person who said to talk to your nutritionist/doctor. I asked my nutrition for tips for someone like me who is on the go a lot and hates cooking. She gave me this long list of options that came in really handy and it helped me stay in my set calorie range. I also use sparkpeople to track everything I eat and its synced with my fitbit, so I know what I burned and what I ate. Even when I slipped up, I tracked...because it forced me to be accountable, but it also kept me from sliding as my brain always imagines much worse than the reality. You can do it! -
BCBS requirements
maredarlin replied to mommabear2311's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm pretty sure it differs between the plans within BCBS. I have BCBS in New Jersey and it took me a little more than three months to complete all the pre-cert requirements. The Doctor told me it could take anywhere from 5 - 15 business days at that point for Horizon to make a decision, but it only took them five days. So It moved along pretty fast for me. It's just a matter of getting all of your pre-cert work done, showing your committed to the process, and doing what needs to be done. Good luck! -

Tomorrow is my surgery :) :(
maredarlin replied to frozengrapes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck with everything! I'm sending good vibes your way. And hey, who you tell is up to you...and I wouldn't blame you for being selective about talking about it when you're getting negative reactions. As long as you're doing what you need to for yourself, you can't go wrong. -
Hi everyone! So I'm slightly freaking out as last night I started to get the scratchy throat that usually means I'm getting sick. Last night I drank some Water with Braggs Apple Cider vinegar (so gross) and it seemed to help a little, but my question is this... I'm on day six of pre-op liquid diet and I've been very good, but I really need to use some honey in my tea as I think it will help. Think this is okay? I'll call the doctor tomorrow if I'm still feeling scratchy and go from there as I'm a week out from surgery...but I know we're supposed to avoid sugar. However, I know that honey really helps. Any thoughts?

Pre-Op diet & start of cold
maredarlin replied to maredarlin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you. I had one teaspoon of honey, so that's 1/3 of a normal serving, but I won't do anymore. I pulled out my neti pot and used more apple cider vinegar. I just went to store and picked up some sugar-free Halls Defense Vitamin C drops. I looked at Airborne, but it has a few things my doctor put on the list to not have in the two weeks prior to surgery, so I'll check with him on that first. But again, thanks. I'm just going to do everything I can to squash this. -
JUST starting my journey. Soo anxious!
maredarlin replied to trailaur's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first visit to my surgeon was on April 28th and I was approved for surgery on August 10th. I was given a list of appointments and doctors that I needed to see, along with the need to show that I was losing weight (no amount, just had to be going down). At least with Horizon, I had to take three nutrition classes spaced one month apart, so that was about as fast as I could do it. However, once all the appointments were done, it was a superfast turnaround for me. Good luck! -

Mine is on August 29th. I'm feeling slightly anxious too. Don't fret too much on the liquid diet. The first day is hard, but I found either having a little chicken broth or a sugar free popsicle helped to satisfy my need to eat. I've just avoided being around other people eating at the moment. Good luck! -

6 day of pre op and going crazy
maredarlin replied to Patchakc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on Protein shakes too for two weeks (this is middle of day four for me). My doctor said I could add some low-sodium chicken broth if I needed to. Day one was hard - hence the looking into broth. But mostly I'm doing okay except today I have been craving a soft pretzel like no one's business. I just keep telling myself to focus and stay on track. Good luck! -

MIne is on August 29th and I'm currently pushing my way through the liquid diet. Today I have been so badly craving a pretzel, but I just chug more Water and tell myself to focus on why I'm doing this. Good luck!
