Hiatal hernia Repair & Gastric Sleeve?
linah replied to MamaAsh32's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had gastric sleeve and hiatal hernia repair at the same time. The Dr also tried to convince me to do a bypass instead but I did not want to and decided to take a chance on the sleeve. I was on acid reflux medication for the first 2 months. Never had any acidity issues during that period, been off the meds for 4 months now and no issues. Took a heartburn tablet once after a very spicy dinner and that was it. I'm even able to have pickles and garlic sauce which I hadn't been able to have in years due the the horrible heartburn that would result. Very happy with everything so far. -

Osteoperosis as complication from RNY
linah replied to RXRW's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had high cholesterol, sleep apnea and bad heartburn issues due to a sliding hiatal hernia. The Dr wanted to do a RNY, I was very hesitant due to a fear of malabsorption issues. Decided to take the risk and go for gastric sleeve instead (if my heartburn issues got worse, I could then have the RNY if I had to). Had the sleeve and the hernia repair at the same time. I have been very lucky during the recovery, no major issues, relatively painless, I'm at 5 months out and no heartburn in the last 4 months :-). Sleep Apnea is gone, cholesterol has improved but I still take Lipitor (lowest dose possible though) Sent from my SM-G900FD using BariatricPal mobile app -

Increasing Calories to change set point
linah replied to Momcat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hope it works, most nutritionists sat it doesn't but a lot of people say it works. I decided on surgery instead of more dieting because I had reached stage where the food I ate was mostly healthy, low fat, I had stopped eating rice and really cut down on carbs and nothing. Final straw for me, we shifted houses, I spent weeks unpacking, cleaning etc, did not watch my food intake so well, found I had suddenly put on 6 kgs. It really depressed me. Went to a nutritionist, measure my metabolic rate and it was 1,100 calories. In other words , in order to lose weight I would have to consume less than that and exercise and it would still take ages. I knew I could not sustain that kind of calorie intake for a long period and that even if I could, I would have to maintain it for the rest if my life or I would put on weight again as I did after every diet ended. There was no way that was feasible for me and that was when I finally began to consider surgery seriously. I am hoping that with the new restriction and increasing my muscle mass, I will find a reasonable balance. Sent from my SM-G900FD using BariatricPal mobile app -
True for the most part, but this is a Harvard study. Believe me I hope a clean solution is found, I enjoy vaping too but it's not worth the risk to me. Then again I don't know how the risk would compare to smoking regular cigarettes, I'm not a smoker so it's not an issue for me. End of the day we all have to do what makes us comfortable, good luck with whatever you decide to do. Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App

The problem with vaping is the chemical additives that give it "flavour" considered carcinogenic. Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App

Did gastric sleeve, not rny, in my case, my cycle was messed up the first 2 months only, after that it stabilised and it's heavy the first 2 days (normal for me) but instead of it lasting 6 days, I'm now done in 4-5 days. Other than that , things are back to normal. Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App

Sugar free cakes, cookies, sweets in general
linah replied to tigraq08's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
4 months out, I make cakes and sweets for a living so I normally have a bite to taste and make sure all is well. The sugar doesn't bother me at all and a bite satisfies my craving (not like before where I would have a whole slice or cupcake ). I never go near sugar free foods because I try to avoid chemicals and processed foods from a health perspective http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/artificial-sweeteners-sugar-free-but-at-what-cost-201207165030 . What i have noticed is that a good night's sleep and eating a small meal every 2-3 hours stops me from craving sweets or chips or other unhealthy Snacks the way I used to pre-surgery. The days when i dont sleep well i crave chocolate and chips. The days where i forget to eat because I'm too busy, i will suddenly crash and want chocolate. As long as i pay attention to my sleep and eating habits, im much more in control of any bad cravings and I will actually go without sweets for a while (this was impossible pre-surgery). Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do, wish you all the best :-) Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App -

3 Weeks Post Op...What meats to try? Recipes? Ideas?
linah replied to NCGURL's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would advise that you stay away from canned chicken. I find chicken specifically needs to be very soft and preferably with a sauce, for me to be able to eat it. If you cook for more than one person, make a whole chicken. Clean then rub with vinegar and salt, add lemon slices and one stick cinnamon, leave to drain in a colander in the fridge for one hour. Discard lemon and cinnamon, make a rub of any spices that you like (1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp cardamom, 1.5 tsp salt, 1 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp allspice ) rub the spices all over the chicken and add 1-2 bay leaves inside the chicken. Prepare a pan, cover with aluminum foil, add olive oil and some yoghurt to the chicken, place in the foil, add some chicken stock with a little of the rub spices, seal the chicken and wrap in another piece of foil, make sure the chicken is completely sealed, bake in lower third of oven at 350 F for 3 hours. Will be extremely tender, tasty and can be eaten as is, or shredded and kept in portions in the freezer. You can then use the shredded chicken in any recipe (sandwiches, Pasta, baked in tomato sauce with veggies etc) Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App -

Relatively low BMI results
linah replied to WillWorkForShoes's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@emmapat14 My Dr had explained that it was safer to do a bypass because of my acidity issues. I chose to go with the sleeve because I was very worried about my body's ability to gain nutrition if I had a bypass. Also if the acidity became worse with the sleeve, I could have a revision to a bypass if it became absolutely necessary . I decided to risk that the hiatal hernia repair would get rid of the reflux issues, it was a gamble and i got lucky. Hope that helps, all the best :-) Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App -
Yes, I use to love canned tuna, can't stand it now. Foods that have heavier (cream based versus tomato) sauces don't taste good to me anymore Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App

Relatively low BMI results
linah replied to WillWorkForShoes's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had a BMI of 36, I also had a hiatal hernia repair same time as the sleeve. Recovery was fine, I would say normal for such an operation. Lost 33 pounds till date, mostly during the first 2 months, things have really slowed down and I hit another stall about 1 week ago. Doesn’t matter, I know it will take its time since my BMI is considered "lower". Doesn’t bother me, this operation has saved my life, I feel so much better, have more energy, no longer have sleep apnea, and for the first time in 10 years I'm off heart burn medication and can drink fresh orange juice and have a pickle once in a while without dying from heartburn. I do need to start working out properly, so far I'm only walking for 1/2 an hour per day and that's not enough. Still this operation has turned my life around and I'm very grateful for it. Sadly true that people react more positively to you when you are thinner. That being said we are all capable of flash judgements even when we try to be as fair as possible. Just be open minded and friendly and people will respond in kind, good luck and all the best :-) Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App

I still can't eat a full salad, just a few bites, don't have the space for it and my priority is Protein. Since I was worried about receiving enough nutrients every day and even if I could eat , I couldn't eat enough of a variety to really help, I went back to juicing. Every afternoon when I go pick up my daughter from school I have my juice on the way as my snack, I do have varieties but my favourite : 3 cucumbers, 1 green apple, one slice of lime with the rind on, 1 carrot. If I have fresh herbs: coriander, basil etc, I blend with some of the juice and add it. Feeling great and since I started, no more issues with constipation. If you will start exercising, take your body measurements for a comparison. I build muscle very easily so my weight started to go up initially with exercising, drove me nuts till I started comparing my measurements and realised I was losing inches so the weight gain was pure muscle ????. Also, if I don't eat enough Protein, I do not lose weight. It's very confusing mentally since we've all been programmed to "just eat less to lose weight" even though that never worked for me, I still had a mental block against eating MORE ???? hardest part is rewiring the brain. I vomited some blood the first few days , this is normal due the blood in the stomach after the surgery. Blood in your stool is not normal, don't think the surgery touches any area that should put blood in your stool. Get a second opinion to be safe. Good luck. Internal bleeding after Gastric Sleeve Surgery
linah replied to L.T.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like she had a horrible doctor, would definitely make a complaint and switch to someone else. Thank God you didn't listen to his advice and followed your instincts, best wishes for a speedy recovery for your daughter, sorry she had to go through this. Water retention is very normal at this stage, don't weigh yourself for the first 2 weeks and then only once a week or less if you can control it, otherwise it will take over your life. Take body measurements once a month for comparison. Sometimes even if the number on the scale doesn't change your measurements will ???? Sent from my SM-G900FD using the BariatricPal App
