I had VSG in November 2016. I never really lost the weight I had hoped (lost about 30 pounds). I'm sure a lot of it has to do with my choices because I really want to get the extra weight off. I recently met with my surgeon to discuss my options and after having a Bravo Endoscopy, we learned I have extremely bad acid reflux (I didn't need a procedure to learn that but whatever). He also stated that I have a hiatal hernia. Today he advised me to undergo gastric bypass which will completely eradicate the reflux. I was hoping to go in for a duodenal switch but he stated that wasn't a good option for me. Does anyone have any experience on vsg to rny with great weight loss results?

I would like to think MGB would be an option, the surgeon is at Duke. With that said, he didn't mention it as an option. When I think 'mini,' I would assume that wouldn't be better for weight loss but I honestly don't know. -

I love humor. I actually perform stand-up on the side. Hopefully someone won't slap me in the face while on stage. -

VSG to RNY - Not excited

I'm not excited because I know I'd get better weight loss with DS than with RNY. I'm shallow I guess but really wanted to lose the weight. He told me DS was an option if I only wanted weight loss but RNY would alleviate the acid reflux. I'm likely going to get the RNY but was hoping someone here could tell me that weight loss is also good with this procedure. -
I had gastric sleeve surgery 11/9/2016. I am 5' 4.5" and weighed 245 on the day of surgery. Fast forward nearly 10 months, I'm down 37#. I have fluctuated between 35 and 40 pounds for the past 5 months. I'm sick with disappointment. I thought this would be easier. I cashed out nearly all of my 401K to pay for this surgery because my insurance wouldn't cover it. What is wrong with me? Am I doomed to be fat forever?? I thought the purpose of WLS was to make it easier to lose weight. Can someone share experiences that helped you get back on track? What is a typical daily menu for you?

Cutting out processed things will be tough but certainly not impossible. Can you recommend a eating plan to stick to? Atkins? Paleo?

Thanks sweetie. I guess since I paid so much and felt I took a drastic measure to lose weight...I was expecting drastic results..

Hi, Thank you so much for replying to my thread. Please don't scream, but I'm not consistently eating low carb/sugar but I'm a heck of a lot better than I was a year ago. Mornings/Breakfast: 1 cup 2% Fairlife milk, with sugar free Nestle Breakfast essentials chocolate powder, 1 cup coffee. This makes my own latte-ish drink. An order of Sous Vide egg bites (egg white and red pepper) from Starbucks (170 cal). Lunch: Frozen entree with at least 15g protein but fewer than 10g of sugar. Snack: greek yogurt with fewer than 10g of sugar or starbucks frappe Dinner: whatever the family eats...last night it was spaghetti. Because of the size of my stomach, I can't eat as much as I used to so I really don't understand why I'm not losing more.

So I've been thinking I'll borrow from my 401k to pay for VSG. Now I'm thinking if I cash out the amount I need, I can itemize at tax time and claim the surgery as a deduction. Has anyone had any experience in this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

November sleevers?
stpatty replied to mimigettingskinny's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm scrolling through this post while waiting for my surgeon to do my preop!! Surgery is scheduled for 11/9!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Just had my psych evaluation and the dang psychologist is trying to convince me that I need to have bypass instead of sleeve. I've looked into this for years and she spent an hour with me. I really wanted to tell her to just shut up. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Pessimistic Psychologist

She introduced herself as a bariatric pain management psychologist. I guess that's what I get for accepting an 'alternate psychologist' to clear me for this requirement. -

I was hoping to return to work too. Maybe I can try to work from home. Mine is 10/31. That's the last requirement I have to complete. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm having my 1st appointment on Tuesday with Dr Daniel Guerron at Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery. I'm curious if anyone has used him or anyone else at their practice. Also, what is the pre-op prep at Duke in regards to the liquid diet before surgery? How long? What is allowed? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I spoke to my HR department today about them allowing our insurance company to allowed me to receive bariatric services and they said they look into it as also check to see if I can purchase the insurance rider to cover it!!! I'm so hopeful they'll value me enough to let me have it! Otherwise, I'll have to cash out most of my 401k. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I sent the HR director a plea (via email) to cover VSG last week. I've gotten no response in any form. How long should I wait to follow up or should I assume she's ignoring me and that equals a denial? I don't want to anger/annoy anyone but I'm getting a bit peeved. When should I follow up?
stpatty replied to stpatty's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My company has an exclusion in our insurance policy and only they (HR) can override the exclusion or at the very least allow me to purchase a rider to the policy. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
