If I had known then what I know now about my DS...
dragonfly2u replied to jessgnc's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I had the ds on 4/14/17. I feel great. I have lost a total of 41 pounds. 26 since my surgery. I still can't eat much and I am taking my vitamins. My bathroom issues haven't been a problem. Maybe because I'm not eating much. I have my labs done tomorrow. -
Last week I spoke with my Surgeon. I'm scheduled for March 14. He asked if I wanted the sleeve or sleeve plus. I asked what is the difference? He explained that the plus was quicker weight loss with better long term results. Of course I immediately said the plus. It was thru my insurance company that I found out plus was the duodenal switch. Not many surgeons do this. Can anyone tell me about the pros and cons with this surgery? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

I baked 4 split chicken breast today. Topped with garlic and pepper. After dividing into 3 ounce portions. I have twelve meals. I froze some for next week. One 3 ounce portion filled me up. Hopefully, the next two weeks will fly by. I have my chicken, green vegetable, Greek yogurt, hard boiled eggs and protein shakes all on hand. I'm taking my vitamins and my juice plus chewables that my surgeon wants me to take. -
I've heard and read stories on both reasons. What ever surgery a person chooses, it's a big decision. The medical staff and Surgeon are the best people to give advise before surgery After surgery, I think the support groups advise will be priceless. I'm new to this. I'm learning more and more each day. God be will us all on our journey to good health and happiness.

I'm 55 years old. I'm in good health. My Surgeon is a specialist in this procedure. Often times the sleeve needs revised. This surgery is more efficient and will benefit me the best in the long run. After 40 years of yo-yo dieting. I'm ready to commit myself to a new lifestyle and to be a healthier me. I have no choice after this surgery. The success rate is high and the complications risk is worth the success rate.

I too have bmi of 40.7. I have no other medical qualifications for surgery. I have lost and regained weight for 40 years. My surgery date is March 14. I started my protein diet today. I hope beyond words that I do it correctly. I had my protein shake for breakfast. I am drinking plenty of water. Lunch will be green beans and small broiled piece of chicken. I am in the process of writing up my daily menu for the next two weeks. I could use a mentor as well. By the way, I live in Jonesboro GA -
My surgeon has me taking juiceplus beginning today. They too will be a daily requirement. Not the best tasting but could be a lot worse.

I am nervous about all the vitamin requirements. I know that it will be a lifetime commitment. I have a great nutritional adviser. I keep reading more and more about the experiences of people who have had this procedure. Some scare the devil out of me. What other forums are you reading?
-
Annie, it started off as the sleeve then my Surgeon asked if I wanted the sleeve plus. I choose the plus. It's the sleeve plus ds and sips. I am prepared for the vitamins. I am considering the patches when possible. I need to lose 120 pounds. I am ready to face the challenges ahead with exercise, eating habits and with all the vitamin requirements. I heard that the vitamins can be expensive but so we're all the sweets and chips I consumed. Just giving up soda was a Hugh accomplishment. What I need most is support and as much knowledge as possible. Recipes and advice is welcomed. This is new to me and even this 2 week protein diet is learning something new. I'm glad I enjoy premier protein shakes. I'd love to hear from others with suggestions.

You can read about the SIPS procedure, not all surgeons do this. It is said to solve bowel issues. I at least hope so. Im glad that is being done with my procedure.

Well I did get a new approval letter where my surgeon upgraded my surgery. I will be in the hospital two days. I start my protein diet today. My doctor says shake for breakfast and snack. Protein and green vegetable for lunch and dinner. Lots of water.
-
What vitamins and amount do you take daily?

I had an EGD done today. I met another lady at the hospital and she said she was having the sleeve plus done. I knew immediately that she was using the same surgeon. We talked about it in depth. I did find out i will be staying over night 1 night. I think the insurance company said out patient with option of being admitted if needed.

Since first posting my uncertainty on surgery type, I have done a lot of reading up on the subject. My Surgeon Dr Tuggle turned me over to Dr Duncan who specializes in preforming the sleeve with the addition of the ds then adding on the sips procedure. The sleeve pouch is a little larger than the regular sleeve. You can eat 4 to 6 ounces verses the 2 with the regular sleeve. However, what you eat passes thru your system with less calories and less nutrition being absorbed. But, by having the sips procedure you have less bowel and smelly gas issues. I researched my surgeon. He speciAlice's in this type of combined surgery. Yes, I'm nervous about doing outpatient. The insurance company approved it that way, but they can always admit me if there are complications. Part of the criteria for doing outpatient is your bmi. Mine is 41. I have my edg on Tuesday maybe they will decide to change it from outpatient to hospital stay after that.

I go Monday morning to speak to anesthesiologist. I will find out more information on Monday.
-
Honestly..scheduled as out patient but if complications then will be admitted. I was under the impression that it was always 2 days in the hospital.
-
Well the orders say sleeve with duodenal switch with sips.
-
I found out my orders include sips.
-
Oh by the way, it's out patient no hospital stay.

I don't know exactly the ds was not an.option when I was first asked if I wanted the band or sleeve. But after the surgeon reviewed all my test and paperwork he decided to offer the sleeve plus. When the insurance sent my approval letter it was for either the sleeve.or the ds.
