    Minimizing complications

My personal story I had RNY bypass on 10/10/16 following every rule to the T! 13 days post op I woke up in tears Saturday morning, was not able to tolerate a protein shake for the first time and it was accompanied by nausea, no vomiting. I went to the gym thinking it was gas pains, nope it got worse. I called my surgeon in tears and he told me to immediately go to the ER. I get to the ER I was in so much pain I was in fetal position and no pain killer would take my pain away! At this point they did blood work and a CT scan of my abdomen everything came back NORMAL! The doctor started saying it was something I had eaten wrong! (I was following my plan to the T) Well the doctor in the ER wanted to discharge me and send me home. I'm a nurse, I said no, something is wrong! Well the surgeon decided to keep me over night just for "observation" I slept the night pain free, when I woke up in the morning the pain had come back. At 12 o'clock the surgeon finally came to see me. At 4:30 in the afternoon I was being prepared for emergency surgery for a diagnostic laparotomy with possible vowel resection. Well it took the surgeon to open me up, to find that I had an intestinal stenosis....he had to reroute my entire bypass! Moral of the story, listen to your body! I could have died from that complication! And with every procedure there is always a risk of complication! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hair loss!

Hey all! A little about me, I started out at 325lbs. I'm currently 3 months post op gastric Bypass surgery! I'm down 70lbs weighing in at 255lbs! I feel amazing, I'm loving the process, BUT I can't deal with this hair loss! It's making me depressed! I used to have this beautiful long black hair and now it's short and dried out and falling out by the pounds Someone please tell me this gets better!!! Anyone have any solutions to this problem? I take my Vitamins every single day and doing great with my Water intake and protein! Any suggestions?! Thank you in advance! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. Hey all! I'm 10 weeks post op. I had my surgery Rou en Y Gastric Bypass on 10/10. 12 days later I was in the emergency room with severe abdominal pain, nothing relieved my pain! They did CT scan and everything was normal including my labs. The following day I was back in surgery due to an intestinal stenosis (that was completely overlooked in the ct scan) and my bypass had to be re routed. And since that last surgery I've been hospitalized 4 times, including 2 endogastricduodenoscopies because of abdominal pain! I'm down 60lbs and I'm happy with my results. I'm just not happy with all these hospital admissions and the pain I've been experiencing! At one point I was kind of regretting having this surgery done. I wonder what it would have been like to have lost the weight on my own! At this point I'm able to eat what I want except raw vegetables, steak, carbs and anything high in sugar! I guess I'm just going through this kind of depressive state! Anyone else had these problems post surgery? I need advice! Thank you! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Stool

I just went 5 days without a bowel movement and as I was talking to my mom on the phone I felt the urge!!! Thank God! Either way I'm going to take a stool softener! Be careful with laxatives, they can deplete you of nutrients (the very little we get) and can dehydrate you! Stool softener is a better route! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. Hi! I'm 2.5 weeks post op from my bypass and 3 days post op from my complication surgery. Today is just one of those days where I haven't wanted to drink any Water and don't have the urge to eat at all! Does anyone else experience these "bad days" I had NO desire to drink a Protein shake tonight so I'm having a yogurt instead? I guess it's better than nothing I really need some motivation to keep going and not let this bring me down! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Pain question

Hi! I was just in the ER for the same pain and ended up undergoing a second surgery because my bypass was too narrow causing me all the pain! Consult your surgeon! I had two surgeries in less than two weeks! Listen to your body, only you know what you're feeling! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. Hey everyone! So I had the bypass on 10/10, everything went amazing! Had barely no pain, except the occasional gas pain and came out of surgery with a drain! 2 days later I got discharged from the hospital. I was able to tolerate everything I drank! The week after surgery I had my follow up visit with the surgeon, he cleared me to resume my activity and to advance to the next diet phase. Well, I did. This past Saturday I woke up in excruciating pain. I tried going to the gym to walk it off thinking it was "gas pain" nope, I couldn't finish because the pain was getting worse and worse. I got home from the gym and tried having a Protein shake and nope, that for the first time didn't go down! At this point, I tried to rest it off and fell asleep and when I woke up I was in tears of how much pain I was in! I called the surgeon which happened to be on call and immediately he told me to go to the Emergency Room. They drew labs and the surgeon decided to do a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis. Labs came back perfect not anemic or anything. The results of the CT scan came back and said I had free Fluid in my abdomen. The surgeon thought it was residual from my surgery last Monday. Well the pain was so severe that they had to give me morphine and dilaudid and it was barely touching me! The surgeon came in and told me that he was admitting me into the hospital and if the pain didn't go away that I would have to have surgery again the following day. So, it was late night when I got my room, I slept the entire night with not a single pain in my abdomen! I woke up actually happy thinking that I wouldn't have to have surgery AGAIN! Around noon yesterday the pain came back so bad that I was in tears once again. The surgeon came in and said that he wasn't sure what was going on that he wants to open me back up and put a camera in to see what's going on! At around 5pm yesterday I was back in surgery. The surgeon was suspecting I had some scar tissue from my bypass that was messing around with the small intestine. Long and behold he found that I had a narrowing in my small intestine and that he had to do a bowel resection (cut that portion of the intestine and reattach it) because I was all backed up! My advice to everyone here: listen to your bodies! Everyone kept telling me it was just gas pain! NO! I knew the difference between a gas pain and the true pain I was having! So here I am now recovering from my second surgery! Today is two weeks since my bypass! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

2 surgeries in less than 2 weeks!

Hi everyone! Finally made it home today after being in the hospital for 4 days! Listen to your bodies! That's all I can say! For all of us who have undergone the bypass or the sleeve, no one knows the huge change we have endured! Everyone kept telling me it was gas when In fact I KNEW it was not! I knew something was wrong! Although I was upset about having to go through with another surgery, im in positive spirits and looking forward to recovering once again! Hugs and kisses to all of you that have reached out! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. Hi everyone! I'm 11 days out of from surgery, I had the Gastric Bypass and I'm feeling a little frustrated because I haven't lost anymore weight since that first week of surgery! I just had surgery, I'm weak, I don't feel well enough to get up and walk in this hot sunny south Florida! I want them to let me do what I feel comfortable in doing and stay out of my business! I'm tired of it! Anyone else deal with this? Any advice? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Water intake

It takes me like 30 min to drink a 16oz bottle LOL! And if it's cold, I can go through almost in one sitting! I was just wondering being only 8 days post op if that was normal! I feel no pain, no pressure, cramps, nothing LOL Cold Water taste SOOOOO good to me haha Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Im out! and at day 4 :)

I'm also 5 days post op! Luckily for me, I haven't experienced any pain except for gas pains and when the doctor removed my drain from my abdomen! ( I nearly passed out for that one)!!! My days at home have been good, still getting adjusted to drinking all my fluids and trying to get more Protein in! But I also do feel really tired at times to the point where I can just sleep all day! Luckily for me I've been able to tolerate everything I've been drinking and eating. My second day home I had an episode of where I got really hot, my heart rate spiked and I felt pale! It was very weird for me, I got scared and almost called rescue! First time I had felt that! Anyone else experienced this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
