10/5 surgery AND Split pea soup is AWESOME
SusieT replied to perspectiveiseverything's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had RnY on 6/20. Turned 64 a month later. Only stayed one night in the hospital. Had no nausea, but did have pervasive back pain. Asked for a heating pad when I got to my room and they brought a water-filled one that was marvelous. Did not use the PCA pump at all, but did use the liquid Tylenol with hydrocodone script once or twice at home to be able to sleep comfortably in my recliner, due to all the distention in my gut due to the gas. Use your phone as a timer for your 1 oz liquids every 15 min. I kept bottled Water, SF tea, Protein shots in a small cooler by my chair and decaf coffee in a thermos. Used a jigger to measure the 1 oz. That first 10 days ain't no picnic, but mine was made worse by the fact that my father died 5 days after my surgery and I had to deal with his funeral planning and service. You do what you gotta do. I will tell you, nothing tasted as good as that first scrambled egg I had on Stage 3! I took 30 min to eat it and it was cold by then, but, oh, man! I have been off Metformin since I started the pre-surgery liquid diet, and am off one of my 2 blood pressure meds totally. My BP is in the normal range and resting heart rate is in the 60s now. Best thing I ever did for myself! 75 lbs down from HW, 40 from SW. You may have weight loss "stalls" at about 3 weeks and 6 wks, but everyone is different. Best of luck to you! Need bariatric vitamin suggestions- HELP NEEDED

I take Optisource Bariatric Chewable. 2 in am, 2 in pm. Don't need to take calcium or B 12 supplements with these, but I do take Biotin to hopefully guard against extreme hair loss. I am set up on automatic monthly shipments on Amazon, so no way I will run out or forget. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App -
I stalled at 3 weeks and again about 6 wks. Almost 3 months out now and losing pretty quickly. It is different for every patient, but the stalls are normal. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

We are told even small amounts of alcohol could cause major dumping, so not worth that chance. Have dumped before. Don't care to repeat it. Did I have a period of mourning for "lost" foods? Yes. Am I over it? Yes! Hubby and I go to a Mexican place and he orders steak/chicken fajitas. I scrape about 2/3 c of meat and veggies onto an extra plate. He eats the rest and we are both satisfied. I might eat some of the refried Beans and cheese, if there are any. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

Eating at 5 weeks post op
SusieT replied to Anabean's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just be very careful with the Premier Protein shakes. They do give you a slug of protein (30g)and are tasty. However, I've never been so constipated in my life as the time of pre-surgery liquid fast and the first month after, due to those shakes. I learned to add 3 scoops of Benefiber Clear to my shakes, along with crushed ice and shake them well, and they went down nicely. Note: You might not be able to drink all 16 oz without feeling queasy. We were told to try half at a time, if that's the case. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App -
Jitters are normal, I think. I even second-guessed my decision for a while afterwards. I had RnY on 6/20. Down 70 lbs from highest weight one year ago. Best decision I ever made for my health. First month is kinda rough, but by the end of the second month, it's a new normal. ????Totally off Metformin and off one of 2 BP meds. More energy and stamina and mobility. Can I eat whatever I want, how much I want, whenever I want? Course not! But that's kind of the point, isn't it? Best wishes today and in your healthy future! Keep us posted. No one warned me about weight stalls, but they sure do happen. Mine were at about 3 weeks and again at 6 weeks. But I agree with the poster who said only pay attention to reaching another "decade" down. Those zeros are magical! So is entering "onederland"! I probably weigh too often, but 3 months out with RnY tomorrow, and I don't get discouraged if the scale doesn't move as fast as I'd like. Instead, I celebrate" "NSV" (Non-academic Victories) : looser clothes/smaller sizes, more mobility and stamina, better emotional outlook about the future. You will make it! We are here for you! I would warn your friend about possible constipation issues with all protein. I never had issues with it in my life til after my RnY on 6/20. While still on liquids, I had to use Benefiber, Fiber Gummies, and/or stool softeners due to the effects of the Protein shakes. As long as I get in fresh or steamed veggies everyday, I'm golden. Waiting for weightloss
SusieT replied to pcosleever's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told by my Bariatric Center that "most" lose 9-15 lbs in the 2 week liver-shrinking pre-op liquid diet required by my surgeon. I did not cheat one bit. I lost 9. So there you go. Sounds like on the the same track as your 4.4 lbs for Week 1. Hang in there! Week 2 was easier for me to do, except for the terrible constipation from all the protein! Be sure to add Benefiber Clear to your shakes or chew Fiber Gummies. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App -
I only had to do a 2 week liquid pre-op to shrink my liver in prep for RnY. I drank Protein shakes, broth, tea, Water, SF Jello and SF Popsicles. The first 3 days weren't too bad. On Day 4 I was ready to gnaw my arm off and beat everyone around me with it! When I made it to Week 2, it was much better. Was told by my NP that most lose 9-15 lbs during this time, and I lost 9 lbs. Now down 30 lbs more since surgery date 6/20. Oh! Be sure to add Fiber to your Protein Shakes. ( I like Benefiber clear--no color, no taste. Or fiber gummies.) Otherwise, all that protein will really make you constipated! I ended up drinking all of my magnesium citrate meant for the day before surgery, in the middle of Week 2. It was THAT bad. Had trouble again the first 2 months after surgery and had to use stool softeners in addition to fiber. Never had this problem in my life! However, since I graduated to Stage 4 of the eating plan, eating fresh or steamed veggies every day does the trick. Yay! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

Sure hope so! 44 oz of sugar would be a lot! I used to think I was getting a SF vanilla latte at McDonald's when I asked for one, til one day a worker there told me they don't have SF syrups. What the what? Back to Starbucks. Pay more, but at least I can get a true "skinny" latte! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

I did not have sleep apnea... yet. Had a study done about 10 years ago that was "inconclusive". I was not required to attend NUT classes, but our Bariatric Care Center offers free twice-monthly support group meetings with the staff Nutritionist and monthly info mtgs with the surgeon. I voluntarily attended these for almost a year, just to learn as much as I could. At the end of the 6 mo dr-supervised wt loss requirement, BCBS issued a "certification" that was valid for 13 months. Oh, dear. I am 2 mo out with RnY and have followed my surgeon's instructions since Day 1. I am taking a supplement for skin, hair, nails and my Optisource Bariatric Chewables daily. Try mightily to meet my Protein goals, but don't always. My is thin, especially on top and especially since menopause, and fine-textured, even slick. I've always been able style it well enough that I get compliments. Most WLS friends report that their loss was concentrated on the crown. I have never looked good in hats or headscarves, so, short of staying home, not sure how to avoid stares and questions when it inevitably happens. Never thought of myself as being particularly vain, but I won't lie, this has me worried. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

I am RnY 7 wks out on Monday. On Stage 3. We are told no Pasta, bread, rice, corn, peas ever again! They are big causes dumping. I am too scared of that to even try. Still on eggs, chicken, deli meats, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, soft cooked veggies, hot cereals. No issues yet. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App
