Pain in left side to back
deerjay replied to asamii's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had this pain. i thought something was really wrong. I was told it was normal. It finally eased up about 3 weeks out. I'm a teacher too. Try wearing really high wasted tight pants. Compression is the only thing that helped me. -
I was miserable with this pain. If your surgeon allows it, ibuprofen liquigels on a schedule really helped me...even more than pain meds. My pain magically disappeared around 3.5 weeks out.

On Full Liquids - I found something I enjoy so there must be something wrong. Help me find it!
deerjay replied to mommafranz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have 3 scoops every single morning. 30 grams of protein! -
The one that hurt me was on my left side where they pulled the stomach out. It was awful. Then almost magically it totally stopped hurting about 3.5 weeks out.

Any 7/14's- post op?
deerjay replied to reducer623's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@reducer623 and everyone else... I'm doing very well. I'm down 30 pounds (including pre-op loss). I'm eating 3 Protein meals a day (2-3 ounces) and drinking 2-3 Protein Drinks a day. Getting all my liquids and Vitamins in too. I'm walkin 30-45 mins daily. I think I'm about ready to work strength training back in 2-3 days a week. I have had terrible side pain since surgery, but I can finally say that it is getting better! It still hurts if I bend or twist too quickly or in the wrong direction, but it is 1000 times better now. How are you all doing?! -
You are so right. I was reading into so much about how happy people are that I guess I almost forgot that it's normal to hurt this much. I had a hiatal hernia fixed as well. So swallowing is a challenge. I'm so used to chugging my liquid, and now I have to stop myself because big gulps hurt. So now I'm sipping slowly. It's challenging to do since I'm so used to drinking fast. This would be so much easier with a straw, but I'm not allowed to use one because it sends gas into the stomach. Does broth have Protein? I can't drink protein shakes until next week. Thanks for believing in us! Bone broth is high in protein. I also had a difficult time at first taking small sips (as I've always been a guzzler). I'm happy to report to you that I'm now 3 weeks out and can drink quite a bit of liquid in a short period of time. Not quite like before but close!

Protein, Bariatric Vitamin, Stall
deerjay replied to Suziesue1706's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgery was the day after yours. I too had trouble taking my Vitamins. I tried taking them before meals, after meals, in between meals, and every time I got extremely nauseated and even vomited once. Thankfully, I think I figured it out a few days ago. I eat about 1/3 of my meal, take vitamin, eat another 1/3, take rest of vitamins, finish meal. This has been working wonders! By the way, my vitamins are chewable, so I'm not drinking during meals. I left my house for vacation 4 days ago. This is the first time I haven't been weighing myself daily. I'm nervous about weighing in when I get home. I don't want to hit the dreaded 3 week stall! I hope these tips are helping and your stall ends soon! -
Left-sided abdominal pain
deerjay replied to reneemdonnell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 18 days out, and I too have this pain. I called my doctor, and they say this is totally normal. Like the poster above mentioned, this is the incision where the stomach was removed. Also some surgeons (like mine) stick the muscle to the abdominal wall from the inside just under the incision. This is what causes the pain. I've been out of pain meds for 10 days, and a few of those were the worst pain I've had since surgery. I've found that 2 things really help me: 1) wearing tight workout pants to compress the area and 2) Advil liquigels (if ok with your doctor). Especially the compression thing...I tried a binder, but the tight pants just work better for me. It's the only way that I can sit up without excruciating pain. I will say that it has been getting a tiny bit better over the last couple days. My doctor said to expect it to last 4-6 weeks. On a more positive note, everything else is going fantastically. [emoji16] -
I have a sleeve, and I was told only Advil liquigels because they dissolve quickly and move out of your stomach.

Medication for inflammation
deerjay replied to beyondgrief's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor says that it's ok to take Advil liquigels and wash them down with warm liquids so they're not in your pouch for very long. -
I don't know about biofreeze, but I can sympathize with this pain. The thing that has helped me the most is compression. I don't have a binder like others suggest on here all the time, but I have been living in really tight pants that support the muscle. The only thing is...now when I'm not wearing the tight pants it is even more sore than before. I'm two weeks out, and everything else is going wonderfully. This pain is really bringing me down though. I can't even get a good night's sleep because of it.

Just found this post and wondering how you all are doing. Do you still have this pain? If not, how long before it went away? I am 2 weeks post-op and this side pain is agonizing. Otherwise I feel great!

First week & Second week
deerjay replied to madisunshine1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm two weeks post and eating 3 meals a day (2-3 oz). I eat cottage cheese, scrambled egg, tuna salad, roasted chicken thigh, grilled pork chop, P3s, mixed nuts, beans. Basically any protein rich food as instructed by my dietician. I still drink at least 80 g. of protein supplements too. Food has been going great! I'm finding my "full signals", which are pressure in my chest and cold sweats [emoji27]. -

I do, but I'm pretty sure policies vary by state.

I'd love to hear some success stories for joint pain medications......
deerjay replied to Dub's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Along the same lines as the gelatin recommendation, I've been hearing great things about Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. I've heard it works wonders for joint pain. -
Anyone in education getting sleeved?
deerjay replied to almost_sleeved123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a high school teacher. I was sleeved on 7/14/16 and I return to school on 8/4. My energy level was pretty low week 1, but now almost 2 weeks out it's pretty normal. My only concern about going back is the pain I am having on my left side. It's pretty severe when I am in a sitting position. While I spend most of the day on my feet teaching anyway, I am concerned about sitting through 2 days of PD and not being able to sit and plan like I need to be doing right now. While my team assures me that this pain is normal, I think mine is a bit more extreme than most or I'm being a baby about it. -
Any 7/14's- post op?
deerjay replied to reducer623's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on the 14th! Mostly everything is going well for me. I'm drinking 60-80 ounces of Fluid daily and getting about 80-100 g Protein. I've also been eating 3 Tbsp of very soft Proteins (egg, cottage cheese, chili, tuna salad, mashed Beans, etc.) 3 times a day since Tuesday. I had my first follow up today and got my staples out, and all seems well. I haven't had a bowel movement yet but also not feeling constipated...yet. My pain in my left side is still crippling when I am in a sitting position. I do feel hungry sometimes, which is puzzling since my NUT said this would definitely not happen. I am 33 years old. HW: 267 SW: 252 CW: 246 -
Between bites of solid food? I don't really time it. I just chew, chew, chew until there's nothing left to chew. I make whatever I am eating take 20 minutes. Right now I only eat 3 Tbsp, and I've only tried scrambled egg, cottage cheese, pimiento cheese, and tuna with mayo. My diet only allows Proteins for the first 2 months. How's your pain? Most of my gas pain is totally gone, but I've got a spot under one particular incision on the left side that still hurts pretty bad. It's like a stabbing pain that goes through my back. It only hurts when I'm in a bent position though, so laying flat and standing is almost painless. I can't sit though, and it's frustrating.

I was sleeved on the same day as you! I am 33 and my SW was 252 (After losing 15 lbs on the pre-op diet). I feel like my protein intake is going extremely well, so I want to share the things I'm using. 1)Every morning I start the day with 2 servings of ProtiDiet Hot Cocoa. 30 g 2) I use Premier Protein (cheap at Costco). I use vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, but chocolate tastes the best. 30 g. 3) another shake type protein I use is Muscle Pharm's Combat Cookies n cream powder. Best powder I've had. Also from costco. 25 g. 4) unjury unflavored powder. I buy this through my dr. It works very well in chicken broth! I made Jell-O shots with it too, but they were a little weird. 21 g. 5) Protidiet juice concentrates. These are by far the most "normal" tasting Protein Drink I've tried. Very easy to drink! 15 g.

Dreading the Nausea!
deerjay replied to NewAdventure2016's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
WARM LiQUIDS!!!!!!!!!!! I had some major nausea in the middle of the night directly following my surgery. They gave me Zofran, but that didn't help either. The following morning I got to drink my first liquid, and I chose hot tea. It helped with the nausea almost immediately. Today I am one week out, and I've only had one other bout of nausea. It only lasted for about 20 mins. I took a Zofran and drank warm broth. I think the warm liquids help the most with nausea. The big culprit for nausea is getting your pouch full of mucus (for me it's a post-nasal drip thing). The warm liquids help that mucus to pass through. I drink something hot every morning and every night. -
Favorite Protein Drinks

Getting sleeved July 12
deerjay replied to ehedary's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is Day 4 for me. I am getting in around 80 oz of liquid and 70 G protein. I am literally sipping all day long. While my sips are still small, I'm starting to be able to sip more frequently (between air bubbles) and also tolerating thicker liquids (like Premier Protein.) I have been able to sleep on my right side since Day 1. My main complaint is the soreness on my big incision on the left side. The pain shoots all the way through my back, and it's agonizing at times even with the pain medication. Also, my right thigh is very sore and tender. I think it's from laying on it so much but am slightly paranoid that it's a blood clot. -
Getting sick of protein shakes--literally
deerjay replied to magoosmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I really like the ProtiDiet juice concentrates. They are 15 g of protein but a nice tasty summery drink. Not thick at all or too sweet. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
CALLING ALL JULY 2016 SLEEVERS
deerjay replied to Tresa Embil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Walking helped the most! I took four walks up and down my hallway on the day of surgery. On the second day, they gave me a chewable gas tablet that helped a lot too. I got some of these for home, and they work wonders. Cheap too! I just got them from Walmart for like 88¢. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
