About Me

  • Gender
    Female
  1. I was sleeved on 17/08. I never had a single thought of regret but I have never been "not overweight" in my life. Carrying all that fat with me all the time nearly destroyed my back, I probably would be diabetic in the next couple of years not to mention psychological damage caused by being "the fat girl". Before the surgery I was fully aware of the risks and how my life will change but I never expected being actually proud of myself every single day just for doing something drastic to improve my life. I'm really happy (even without looking at the scale... which makes me even happier ) that I did it.

    Some pre-op advice :)

Yup, I walked home. It was only 30 minutes. I'm NOT saying anyone else should do it.
  3. Hello, I'm 8 days post-op and wanted to share some tips that might help others survive the surgery and recovery without stress, complications and pain. My surgery was 45 minutes long, I had no pain or nausea, I walked and sipped Water the same day, walked home on day three and never took any of prescribed pain meds. I must've done something well, so... Pre-op 1) Stay well hydrated! After the surgery you will be able only to sip water so drink as much as you can until the last moment; 2) Stay active! Get your cardiovascular system in shape, it really makes a difference in your recovery time; You might also consider doing some respiratory exercises or respiratory joga; 3) Stick to your diet! No cheating, seriously! It might be hard, unpleasant and boring but your surgeon knows better. It will speed up your recovery and reduce the risk of complications- totally worth it! 4) Most important- stay POSITIVE! If you are struggling don't be ashamed to seek professional help. Bonus tip Quit sugar- it was recommended by my surgeon, I have no idea if it helped during the surgery but my skin looks great, and I'm full of energy. Post-op 1) Start moving around as soon as possible; Walk a lot- it will also ease digestion. 2) Sip water constantly... I used to drink 2-3 liters of water, now I'm down to 1,5 which is quite hard to get in, staying hydrated is very important; 3) Take your time, you will probably want to eat food you shouldn't- don't! I ate one shrimp- dumb idea. 4) Appreciate yourself more- You did it! You made a decision to change your life, be confident and proud of yourself... 5) Get a hobby- you will have plenty of time to think about food, so it's better to keep yourself busy. Bonus tip: Ask your surgeon for a letter that explains simply the surgery and post-op care. You can share it with your family members and GP. In case of emergency it's important that somebody knows what was the exact procedure. I also found that people understand my surgeon better than my explanations. I really hope that my personal experiences will help. I was also scared and going through this forum over and over again obsessing about pain and complications. Thankfully I did not experience either so far. I wish you all the best on your weight loss journeys A.
  4. Mine were great! I had no pain or nausea and I walked around a couple hours after the surgery. I was discharged on 3rd day, walked 5 miles home, never took any pain meds. I'm 8 days post-op now, the only thing I regret is stupidly eating some (murderous) shrimp and vomiting. Thankfully nothing happened, it was just unpleasant.

    Pre-Op diet and exercise

Hello, I had the same liquid diet although only one week long. I walked a lot 3 weeks before surgery (6-7 miles a day). I'm one day post op, don't have any pain except for some gas discomfort so I must've done something that minimised the pain. My advice would be- stick to your diet, do some cardio and respiratory exercises (they are really helpful).

    Big day tomorrow! :)

Actually it was great. No pain, the medical staff was great. I barely remember anything- last thing joking about "air mask". Today I will have my leak x-ray and tomorrow I'm going home. I think that sticking strictly to my liquid diet and being active really helped a lot. That's great!! U n i will be 2 weeks apart ???? this liquid diet is soooo hard. I'm only 2 days in and it feels like an eternity. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App Try walking a lot and drink lots of Water. I also tried every possible kind of green tea I could find not to get bored. I really think it helped a lot. You will be just fine! PS. They didn't give me the traditional xray leak test. I have a drain in my stomach and they gave me blue Fluid to drink. It didn't end up in the drain so there are no leaks. My doctor said that the contrast used for xrays is hard to digest an can upset my stomach- I didn't know that.

I'm a day after the surgery. Everything went super smooth! I'm sure yours will also be painless and complication free! Good luck, let us know how you are doing!

    Big day tomorrow! :)

Hello everyone, I'm 12h after! I slept all day, had no pain whatsoever, though I felt a little bit gassy. I don't remember much of the operation, they sedated me a bit before and gave me Xanax to sleep the night. I have a drain on the biggest incision and was allowed to drink some Water and go to the toilet. My experience so far- no need to stress about pain, your medical team will do everything in order for you to be comfortable.

    Big day tomorrow! :)

Best of luck with your surgery. As to food, no, Inwas required to be on clear liquids 24 hours before surgery and nothing by mouth after midnight the day before surgery. You were sooooo lucky. I basically starved myself on one Protein shake a day, Water, green tea an some diet sodas (I might have overdone it ;D). I will be super upset if it turns out I will be in a lot of pain or have complications.

    Big day tomorrow! :)

Well I'm having my surgery in Belgium, so I guess the rules are a bit different. I didn't eat the food although it wasn't looking bad (there was butter and fluffy bread... :c). I also got a blood thinning shot in my leg and I'm supposed to shower with antiseptic soap today and tomorrow morning. Thank you all for your support!
  12. In 12 hours I will be sleeved. I'm already in the hospital (surgery is at 7:45 tomorrow) and feeling a bit anxious. I was also given real food! Did anyone else got food day before surgery? It's really confusing...

    Questions For The Surgeon

I wrote a list of 20+ questions before consultation with my surgeon. I mostly asked about technical things- diet pre and post op, leave from work, mobility after the surgery, medications and Vitamins etc. He did more than 25000 WLS so I felt I didn't need to ask about his qualifications. I choose the surgery for myself (VSG) before my consultation. If you can have both the surgeon will advise you the best option but ultimately you will have to live with it.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

It all depends on you. The procedure is just a tool to help you loose weight. If you are willing to change your lifestyle, eating habits and the way you think about food you will succeed, no matter what you choose. Sounds silly but before I started I had a lot of misconceptions about portion sizes and "healthy" food. After meeting my surgeon I started doing small changes to see if I can survive post-op diet. Gradually I quit sugar, coffeine, started eating more lean protein and veggies and it seems to be working just fine. It's also important to have support. Your family and friends can really help with keeping you on track. You are doing a positive change to improve and prolong your life, don't let anyone tell you it's a bad idea and you are lazy/selfish/look just fine/whatever. It's your decision and your life. Stay strong (and fierce )!

    Sleeve or Bypass?

I was also thinking about getting a bypass because it's more effective than sleeve but decided against (my VSG is on August 17th). Bypass is recommended for patients who have higher BMI and/or high blood pressure/diabetes/sleep apnea/etc (I'm BMI 40 and no other conditions). You have to do your research about this procedure, it will drastically change your life (I'm not saying VSG doesn't ). There will be "dumping syndrome" and you will need to take supplements for the rest of your life but you can loose more weight. You will also need regular blood tests so choose your hospital carefully. However in your place I would definitely get a bypass. Good luck with your journey I'm sure you will make the right choice.
