It finally clicked! I get it now.

I know exactly what you mean...or at least I know it in the dispassionate/reasonable side of my brain. Now, if I could just get my emotional/social brain, AND my stomach to the same place, I'd be far better off! It is early days yet for me, and wisdom comes with time...I hope!
  2. I am relatively new (banded since Feb), so I don't have a wealth of experience. However, for me, I am trying to not respond with food to cravings. I am trying to 'break' the need to feed and that includes crunching ice chips . It is TOO easy for me to slip - munch on ice...sip of a Protein drink..then a taste of this or that. Instead, I try to distract myself. I have gone to the closet and put on an article of clothing that was too small...and say, THIS is why you should not have X. I have picked up some sewing to be done, or ironing, or vacuuming, or dusting - sadly, there is always housework! While at work, I have gone to the ladies room and brushed my teeth - I love the feeling of clean teeth! I take a walk...distraction is my action. Good luck.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

I gave myself the lap band as my 50th birthday present! And as a self-pay, it was an expensive one! However, I do not regret it, and (bless his heart) DH has been supportive. Our original plan was to take the $15K and have a wonderful overseas vacation, but as he said, Australia/Japan/India/Africa will always be there, your health will not. I was banded Feb 21st, and no glitches/concerns since. I have my 2nd fill next week, and I am hoping it will give me some restriction...but even if it takes 10, I will succeed. I spent several months lurking on lapband site, but sadly, never scrolled down to this section...I was focussed on the pre and post groups. I am thankful for all the insights and opinions) even the contradictory ones! Now that I have found this group, I hope to become a regular. So, Hi and it is nice to meet you all.

    most ignorant reply

jtag...I gave exactly the same response and this was pre-drugs. I mean seriously, why else would I have the surgery? I had lots of money and nothing to spend it on? Thought it might be a fun thing to do? I thought it would eliminate facial hair and wrinkles??? Thankfully, the nurse laughed...and said 'Best answer yet'. Oddly enough she didn't respond when I asked why she would ask such a question. From reading the above posts, this has confirmed that not telling anyone (other than DH) was the right decision for me. I wouldn't have the patience to respond with eloqunce and calmness, and my tolerance for fools is..well,...limited.
  5. Does anyone know of a dr doing fills in London Ontario?
  6. As a recent bandster, first let me thank everyone for the wonderful advice, companionship and laughs this forum has provided...you are fabulous! My question: when that urge to have a snack, rather than giving into it, what non-food substitute do you use? I realize that Snacks are not inherently 'bad', but I am more interested in trying to retrain my body from always adressing a munchie urge with food. So far, I have used these techniques...if at work, I brush my teeth (I like the feeling of clean teeth and therefore won't eat for while). If at home, I go to my closet and try to put on an article of clothing kept from a previous lower weight...that quickly curbs my appetite. :confused2:

    Your favorite pre-band meal

My fav meal pre-banding... Start with Caesar salad with lots of homemade garlic croutons and homemade garlic dressing made with real mayo. Entree - homemade 5 layer lasagna with full fat cottage cheese, mozzarella, parmesan, regular ground beef plus veggies dessert - Thin slice of a seasonally approriate cheesecake All served with full bodied Italian wines, crusty homemade rolls with garlic butter, and ending with brandy and coffee. Ahhhhhh.............:huh2:
  9. I am recently banded (not yet had a fill). Without wanting to appear stupid, what is the size of a 'sip' of liquid? As someone who normally consumes 3 litres of Water a day (I LIKE water), I can consume 1 litre in an hour without even being aware of drinking. Can the pouch stretch with too much water at one time (my sense is that it would)? Is a sip enough only to wet your lips? or to have an amount to swallow? or what? I know 'chugging' would be too much, but other than that I don't know what the measure would be. Thanks :confused2:

How big is a sip of liquid?

Thanks for the feedback...although 2 or 3 sips to empty a medicine cup...good heavens no wonder some people find it a challenge to consume all their water every day! At that rate, it would take an hour to drink a cup. Oh well, if I must, I shall.
  11. I was banded at 1200 on Friday and walking (albeit slowly) on Sunday. I was back to my desk job on Monday, and walking from work (about 30 min normally, 45 min that first week) that same day. I was not on any pain meds, and the gas pains were gone by Tuesday.

    Left shoulder pain??

As someone who has had multiple abdominal surgeries starting when I was in my teens, the left shoulder pain has always been a post-op effect I have experienced. It usually lasts for 2weeks (although less every day). I was expecting it after the banding, and sure enough it is here. My husband understands that one of his many roles is 'burping' me - gently rubbing the left shoulder area does work to relieve the gas pressure. That, and walking work wonders. Im now on my second day post op - up and about, sipping fluids and burping regularly!

    equivalencies

thanks. that was more or else my approach, so apple juice, water and broth it is...not particularly appetizing, but I will follow the rules to a 't'.
