  1. I've tried googling this, and I don't think it knows what I mean. We all know what it feels like to be fat (not fitting in certain spaces, moving more slowly, that general uncomfortable/flabby feeling). How does this compare to 2nd-3rd trimester pregnancy? I had a pregnant friend (who's never been overweight) tell me "Oh you'll find out when you're pregnant how the extra weight affects you" and all I could remember was how I felt 70 POUNDS AGO. Not sure if we're talking apples and oranges here.
  2. Hi all - I'm a 28 y/o F. I've been obese my whole life and over the past 5-7 years I've hovered around 200lbs. My BMI is just about 40 and I have no comorbidities. My GW is 130. I have my first appointment in the end of August - 6 weeks of waiting! And I made the appt in June! I've done a LOT of research and thinking and I think I want to pursue WLS. I think it's the only way I can really get the weight off. I checked my insurance and on paper I'd qualify. However, because my BMI is (only) 40, I'm otherwise perfectly healthy and believe it or not I DO exercise 3x/week and eat well, even cut out soda and alcohol over a year ago and haven't lost an ounce for it. I'm SO afraid they'll say I'm not a good candidate because "I'm not fat or sick enough" or "I don't have THAT much to lose". That they'll just tell me I need to be more diligent about exercise or whatever my PCP has already been telling me for years. I'm putting a lot of stake into this appointment and I just don't want to get my hopes up if I'm just going to be denied. I desperately need some help (which is hard for me to admit), and I'm so scared I won't get it. Anyone else have a similar experience? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. I had my first UTI (in about 10 years) about three months ago (finished abx course) and I’m getting one again. This one isn’t as bad and I’m on top of my fluids now. I might be able to get rid of it without antibiotics. I don’t know why I’m getting another one. I was sick last week and I’ve been severely lacking in hydration, so not sure if not peeing as often has something to do with it. Anyone else experience this?
  4. I'm applying to increase my life insurance policy and need to complete a form. It asks if I've had any treatment or observation in the last 5 years, and I'm wondering how honest I should be. I had a coworker denied d/t prior back surgery, so I'm worried I'll be denied if I say I had VSG. They can always ask for my medical records or a physical and then they'll find out anyway and deny me. Anyone have experience with this?
  5. I'm sure you're right - It's supplemental anyway and I'm guaranteed at least 1x my salary. I'm opting for more since it's open enrollment, but for anything more than 1x salary, you need this stupid form...
  6. I'm 11 months out from my sleeve. The past week I've been following a strict keto diet but today I broke down. I was stressed out and I ate 3/4 a bacon egg and cheese sandwich. I've never done that since surgery and I'm so mad that I let myself emotionally eat. Ugh. Have I lost restriction? I'm so surprised by how much I was able to eat.
  7. I'm 10mo out and I can eat 5-6oz at a time depending on what it is. Bfast: iced coffee followed by 2 hard boiled eggs Mid morning snack: One whole sliced cucumber, no skin Lunch: 3oz grilled chicken breast w/ ketchup (don't judge lol) Mid afternoon snack: baby bell light cheese with handful of almonds and a rice cake Dinner: mixed green salad with tuna and light dressing. Had a sprinkling of dried cranberries and walnuts in it. Dessert: a few spoonfuls of halo top ice cream

    Sleeping on your side?

As soon as it's comfortable, you can sleep on your side
  10. Hi all, Past few weeks I've been feeling bloaty but without excess gas. I'm about 9mos post op so I should still be losing, but I've been stuck at same weight for a few weeks. I'm even up 1lb this week from last week. Aside from increasing fluids, what can I do?

    Bloated without gas

You think I'm not "getting it all out", so-to-speak? lol

    Bloated without gas

Pretty regular. I do take a colace every other day as a prophylactic measure. I'm bloated today, but I did go #2, albeit it was a small one... they have been pretty small lately.
  13. @enngeecee Yeah that's the joy of living in the US. You're only as sick as you can afford to be! Fortunately I have good insurance that I pay out the nose for, so I better have qualified!
  14. Hi everyone, I'm about a week shy from being 6mos post-op from VSG. I've lost about 45lbs so far but my weight loss has slowed dramatically. I haven't had a stall yet (didn't even have the infamous 3-week stall) and I'm really lucky for that, but I've been hovering at 155 for about 6 weeks now. It's really frustrating and I don't know what to do differently. I'm staying in my calories (about 1100/day at this point) and trying to stay active and hydrated. Am I just DONE losing weight at 6 months post op???! I still have 30lbs to goal!
  15. November 2016 sleever here (so pretty close to you). I've lost like 45lbs, have 25-30 to go.

    Hairloss

I'm about 6mos out and I'd say I have mild- to moderate- hair loss. It's not coming out in chunks like some people, but it's just falling out in strands almost constantly. No bald spots or anything it's just annoying.

    Question about expected percentage lost

I find it amazing how everyone is so different with their weight loss. I started at 200lbs (I'm 4' 10"). Currently sitting at 157lbs, so I've lost around 50% of my excess weight at about 5 months post-op. My surgeon earlier this month said I was ahead of the curve for where I am post-op, which is great, but I have the feeling things are going to slow down quite a bit. I've only lost 5lbs in the month of March.

    3 weeks post op cheat

I think you're OK. Anyone who says this surgery "fixes" any sort of food cravings is crazy. I crave sweets all the time still. If it makes you feel better, about 5 weeks after surgery I had alcohol. It was Christmas time and I come from a heavy-drinking Irish family that doesn't take "no" for an answer when they offer you food/drink. And I survived. This is going to be the reality of the rest of our lives. You're going to have good days, and bad days, just like if you were trying to lose weight the "normal" way. The only big difference is now you have a tool to help you, like using the bumpers in bowling Good luck! And don't beat yourself up!

    Mistake??

Girl, buyers' remorse is so common. I promise this will pass. Focus on walking around, fluid intake and protein intake. That's the recipe for success. You need to move around to work the gas through your body. You can't really burp or fart it out since they used it to inflate your abdominal cavity to make the procedure easier. I was in tremendous pain for about 3-4 days but it passed very quickly.

    Insurance Approval

That language makes it sound like cosmetic surgery isn't covered - like excess skin removal. May want to call and ask specifically about the weight loss surgery itself. The "not limited to" part can get kind of tricky and they may try to pull a fast one on you with an initial denial, which can always be appealed by your surgeon.

    Abnormal lab results

Probably will not delay surgery for you. My vitamin D was very low as well and they asked me to start taking supplements prior to surgery, but would not have held anything up. My insulin levels were also crazy high but it didn't hold anything up either.
  22. How do you get over the guilt of being fat? For those of you who used to be thin, and gradually gained weight over the years, how did you handle this? For those of you who were overweight or obese as children, what is the point where you stop blaming your parents for "making you fat", and actually take personal responsibility? How do you handle comments from others who simply think that if you "just put down the fork", you can lose all the weight you need?
  23. Hi all, So I have a tentative surgery date of 11/11! My first visit w/ my wlc, my BMI was 41.2 (something like that). I met with the surgeon on Tuesday and my BMI was 39.8 (no comorbids). He's going to submit my paperwork and they are using the first weight. I asked if I might get denied by my insurance because the BMI went down. And he said "it depends, I'm wording my note a certain way and I don't think it'll be a problem". He didn't even feel the need to order a sleep apnea test, which I have no idea if I have or not. He said I have "the best" insurance in terms of requirements, etc, whatever that means. He was very nice, almost TOO chill for a surgeon... So at the time he put my mind at ease but now I'm freaking out! Good old anxiety strikes again! Meanwhile, I scheduled ALL my pre-op appointments and told my boss about the surgery since it's only 2 months away and I'll be out of the office for a bit. Man I just hope the rug doesn't get pulled from under me after all this! Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Like your BMI went down at some point during the process? 24. Hi everyone. What is the best form of contraception you've been recommended? Or, what have you been using that has been effective? I have been on the pill for 11 years, no problems, ever. Came off it for one month prior to surgery and re-started again this month. My surgeon didn't mention anything else in regards to contraceptives, but I've seen a lot of stories of women who get pregnant soon after surgery. I'm sort of worried that my go-to method might suddenly not work. They say the pill is like 99% effective if taken correctly. Does WLS decrease the effectiveness?
