  1. I am not sure why all the negativity seems to prevail here, and that people constantly say "well I'll just leave the group, then". Expecting respectful and civil behavior from adults is not unreasonable! No one should be treated poorly because they lack information or describe an experience that differs from another. I don't think being a "veteran" should be an excuse to be mean or condescending. It's not that hard to be supportive or simply ignore something that you find offensive or ignorant. If I have ever offended anyone with an insensitive remark, I readily accept responsibility for my comments and offer my apologies. Just *another* opinion.

    NSAIDs or no NSAIDs?

I am not disputing the fact that "stomachs don't vary based on who cuts it out". What I mean when I say to go by what your doctor wants is this: Stomachs may not vary, but treatment options do. Some doctors will let you take NSAIDs occasionally if there is no other alternative. Usually, there are other options for pain relief and reduction of inflammation, but you will need the guidance and supervision of your doctor in order to explore those other options and be monitored while doing so.

    NSAIDs or no NSAIDs?

You have to go by what your surgeon wants. I have a sleeve and was told no NSAIDs. I get by, but sometimes I have to take Norco to take the edge off of my pain. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis in my back. I get the 5/325 dose, and usually half a pill makes me feel better without feeling loopy. You will just need to work with your doctors on this. And I do have a medic alert with "no blind NG tube and no NSAIDs" Good luck to you.

    Just feeling down

I am so sorry you're feeling down. Life definitely has a way of knocking us down sometimes. Try to remember that you are not worth any less because your ex is seeing someone else. She's not better, just different. You will need time to come to terms with everything; divorce is a life-changing event that most people need therapy to get over. Focus on taking good care of yourself. Eat well, try to get some exercise, get enough sleep and keep telling yourself that this will not last forever. You will feel better. Just don't give up.

    Sugar

I have to avoid sugar like the plague...it does awful things to me! I can't stress enough to anyone trying to lose weight: Sugar is only going to cause you heartache. It causes inflammation and really messes up weight loss. Try to keep it very limited...

    I'm so hungry! (pre-op diet)

They don't dissolve well. My surgeon has seen some labwork come back with some deficiencies with Gummies so he stopped allowing them.

What’s the Most Awkward Part of WLS?

This may sound stupid, but I find it hard to go out to a bar (my husband and I don't drink but we play darts a lot) and I just order Water. Sometimes I get a feeling that they think I am just being cheap. So sometimes, if I get a reaction I will just politely let them know that I had surgery on my stomach and water is all I can have. Plus I always tip for the service, not a percentage of the tab. Seems to work well, but I always dread a new place where they aren't familiar with me.

    Current Weight July 18, 2016

@@jaimelu I have Blue Cross. I got referred early and they approved me after three months because I had done all the classes and was already diagnosed with sleep apnea. I think Blue Cross is pretty supportive of WLS. They know it lowers future claims for diabetes and other obesity related issues. Glad you got approved! Is your pre-op diet bad? Mine was 2 weeks of nothing but liquids...it was rough but I would do it again!

    Current Weight July 18, 2016

Insurance usually goes by your starting weight to qualify you. Then you may be asked to lose a certain amount to prove that you can make the necessary changes for success with the surgery. I will tell you that every insurance policy is different, so please verify what is expected in order to qualify. I was told to only lose 5% of my weight and they went with my starting weight to qualify me.Biggest thing is not to gain. This is very important. Good luck to you!

    Slow Loss

Steady loss is a gift from the weight loss Gods...you could be like me and not losing anything for 3 weeks. Be glad you're not stalled! I'm sure what you're eating is fine; that's good loss.

    Regret

You need some nausea meds. I understand the nausea; I still get it sometimes. It will get better, but only if you manage to stay hydrated and get some nourishment. Your body has been through a lot. Be patient with yourself, but don't be afraid to let your doctor know that you are struggling. Good luck, and feel better soon!

    So impatient

When I started out in February, I was told by my insurance company that I had to wait 6 months. I had a lot of appointments to do, so I was really busy for the first 3 months. Then, at my 3rd appointment with the doctor at the weight management center, I was informed that since I had everything done that I was being referred to the surgeon early. I had NO hope that I would get my surgery before August. My first appointment with the surgeon had to be rescheduled because he had been called into emergency surgery. I was crushed, but figured I would have to wait til August anyway. But, I saw him about 10 days later and my insurance approved me after 3 days! I got scheduled and started my pre-op liquid diet a few days later. Longest 2 weeks of the entire process...but I made it and was sleeved 5/23! You ladies will make it too!!! Hang in there...
  17. I am a 46 year old female living in NC, and really need someone who has been through this process to help me through mine. I am a slow loser. HW 235 SW 219 CW 203. I have identified a few areas that needed some change--I was taking in too much sugar for about 2-3 weeks (hidden in my greek yogurt) and I felt pretty stupid for missing that. I desperately need to break out of this stall I have been dealing with for 3 weeks. I can't seem to get under 200 to save my soul...even after reducing the sugar--I read every label carefully these days!! I never thought it would be harder to lose after surgery. I really expected my weight loss to just be automatic as long as I followed my plan. Nothing could be further from the truth! I am trying to get more exercise, but I have fibromyalgia, so I have to be very careful or I can land myself in bed for three days. I think my body is just holding on for dear life; afraid I will starve so it won't let go of too much weight yet. Anyway, if we have anything in common, or if you think you might be able to help me, please get in touch. Thank you!

Oh, how easily we sabotage ourselves...

I just have an observation about my journey (short as it might be: I was sleeved on 5/23/16). I had to go through a comprehensive program before I could get a referral to the surgeon. Nutrition classes, support groups, psych eval, exercise classes, smoking cessation lectures, monthly weigh-ins...pretty much the whole shootin' match. I was explicitly instructed on every aspect of the surgery of my choosing. I was given a goal weight to reach and was not to gain ANY weight or I got to go back to the beginning and do it all again. Once I completed all of this "stuff", I would advance to the next phase. I am sure this is no surprise to anyone here by now; it's pretty much the gold standard in weight loss centers of excellence. So here's the part I am finding the most fascinating and INFURIATING: I did it all flawlessly. I sailed through that program and got approved for surgery in three months. Then, I endured my two week pre-op liquid diet like a champ. Never cheated once. I reached my surgery goal weight and all was well! Fast-forward to today. I have done everything by the book...and NOW I can't seem to lose ONE damn pound? Wasn't the surgery supposed to make things happen? Wasn't it supposed to be a great tool that might even make things a little easier? I am so disappointed in myself and the "process". The thing I hate most of all is this: I can't seem to relax and let this happen. I just wake up every morning, still at the same weight, and keep on keepin' on. And I ask myself: What have I done ANY of this for? I am so afraid I will end up the same fat person with the same fat problems, only my insides got rearranged and I went through a lot of sh*t to lose 30 pounds. And then I pray. I pray for success. I pray for patience. I need this to work. Is it going to work? Disclaimer: I am in no way meaning this to be a pity party, and I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me. I just needed to get this off my chest, and maybe hear from someone who also struggled like I am. Nothing more, nothing less. Thanks for listening.

    First Time Out Drinking

Nobody is obligated to weigh in on every topic or coddle anyone. If someone wants to post something ridiculous, let them, and learn to ignore it. Take what you want and leave the rest.

    So impatient

I felt that way, too. What you can do is work on making some changes that you will need to make for surgery. If you drink soda--even diet--quit now. Get used to drinking water a LOT. Increase your protein intake. You can research procedures and get an idea of which surgery you think is better for you. Start gathering bariatric recipes, if you like to cook. It's good that you are so focused on the surgery, because it's a huge life change. And you have to change forever, so build your good habits now. It's hard to wait, but it will go by faster than you think. Best wishes to you as you begin your journey!
