What I wish I had known...

@@Ale Nunez so sorry you have had a painful experience. It just takes time, and you will be feeling better soon. I know that sounds lame, but it really is true. Keep posting and let us know how it's going for you.
  3. It will get better! Surgery is hard on your body, and it's been some time since you had solid food. Keep working on the Protein and make sure you get as much Water as you possibly can. You'll feel better as time passes and your body adjusts. Keep posting and let us know how you're doing.

    Suggestions and Motivation

Sometimes you just need to give yourself a break. I am not very far out yet, but I have found that my weight loss tends to go better when I keep my metabolism guessing a little. Change up your exercise, be sure you get your protein and water, and rest when you need to. It's a long haul, and I imagine we all get a little weary from time to time. Hang in there. Keep us posted.

So glad to see the update! I am happy for you. Sounds like you're going to be just fine!
  10. Congratulations! Nerves are normal, so just keep thinking about all of the reasons you decided to have surgery. I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas morning!! The first days can get rough, but luckily it all improves rather quickly for most. The best bit of advice I ever got was to keep sipping fluids and walk walk walk! It will help your soreness to go away so much faster when you walk. I didn't even have pain on the ride home from the hospital, so it works! Also it helps keep your blood moving so you have less risk for blood clots. Stay positive and be patient with yourself. Best wishes, and keep posting to let us know how you are doing.

    Advice from ex smokers?

My experience is slightly different, but I think it will still translate. I quit cigarettes a couple of years before I made the decision to have WLS, but I used e-cigarettes to do it. I still had the addiction to nicotine, and had merely traded one addiction for what was pretty much the same habit. When I learned that I had to be free of nicotine to qualify for surgery, I became so determined to have the surgery that I immediately bought zero-nicotine juice for my e-cig and set my mind to quitting. I made it through the nicotine withdrawal on sheer determination. Then I decided it was stupid to continue using my e-cig with no nicotine, so I eventually quit that, too. I am certainly not giving you a recommendation to just pick up a different habit, but trying to explain how I got it done. I just had to decide what was most important to me. What do you want more? I wanted this surgery more than I had wanted almost anything in my life. I struggled for a year to lose the weight on my own and simply could not do it. It helped me to visualize myself having reached my weight loss goal. Also, there is no shame in getting help. I had a severe sugar addiction also, and I spent some stressful days and nights really pissed off that I had to give up the things I loved. I was pretty bitter about the fact that I essentially had no more vices. I had to learn to cope without my addictions. It was so very hard, but so very worthwhile. You CAN do this. I have now learned to face my emotions and allow myself to feel them. I still cry. I still get cranky. It does take less time to get over it, though. I have had some pretty wicked mood swings, but I know why I have them and I know they won't last forever. I hope you find your answer. You are stronger than you think you are. Good luck to you!

  15. I am the first to admit that sometimes the truth hurts! Some situations just can't be supported. I would want to know the truth if I were doing something to hurt myself.

    How to quit sugar ?!?!?!?

I was the world's worst sugar addict!!! I have learned along the way that my body does not do well with sugar. It makes me hungry and tired and fat. I went through a LOT of worry and uncertainty about how I would ever let it go, though. I honestly tried to just love myself fat and accept my body, etc. etc. All just so I could keep my beloved sugar. When it became a health issue, I had to face it head on. I became prediabetic and just could not get the weight off. I had to do a lot of work on my issues with food; it was my favorite way to cope. Fast-forward to today, and I can honestly say that I am so happy to have made peace with giving up the sugar. It takes a while, it's hard, but SO worth it. You will feel better, I promise. Your palate will change over time. I recently ate a couple of bites of Key Lime pie on vacation, and I felt ill afterward. I couldn't wait to get back to my sugar-free self again! I was so shocked! The sugar sacrifice became my preference, not a punishment. I feel free. I enjoy fruit a great deal (still limited, but it's my treat now) because I still love sweet things, just not cane sugar. Be patient with it, and know that you will succeed if you keep trying! Sugar free popsicles are very good when cravings hit, by the way. Hang in there!!

    Just the beginning...

All insurance is different, but I hope you are pleasantly surprised with a fast approval. It's a very exciting journey, isn't it? Take the pre-op preparation time to make some changes if you haven't yet. Drink lots of Water and practice eating more slowly and chewing a lot. The time will pass pretty fast. Soak it all in; you are on your way to a new life!

I don't seem to be losing very much...

You are doing great. I know exactly what you are feeling, though. I expected this to happen much faster for me, too. I have learned a lot about my body and what I respond to better and what I don't respond to at all, etc. Sometimes we feel as though nothing is happening, when in fact our body is working pretty hard at making huge changes. These things take time, but you will get there if you stick with it. Best wishes to you! Keep the faith!

What I wish I had known...

That's awesome. It's good to share your good experience as well, so that people are aware that it may not suck as much as it possibly can, LOL! I wish I had come here before my surgery...I would have had so much more wisdom when I needed it most. I really enjoy the vast variety of information here.

What I wish I had known...

I am really glad you had a great experience. But yours is the experience I had been led to believe that I would have, and when it was nothing like that, I have to admit that it hit me pretty hard. I am definitely doing much better now, but I felt really mislead because I wasn't warned of other difficult circumstances that might arise as a result of the surgery. I certainly don't think that my experience is the "gold standard", but I really don't want pre-ops to assume that everything is going to be ideal. I wish everyone could have a recovery without difficulties, but it's just not going to work that way for some. Thanks for your comment; it's inspiring! I hope the rest of your journey is great, too!

How Has Your Food Budget Changed?

I have spent a small fortune on vitamins, protein powder and protein bars. I think I spend less at the grocery and more at the bariatric clinic. I find it a worthwhile investment.
  22. I have gone back and re-read the thread here, and I really need to call myself out and apologize! I never wanted to come across as such a bitch. I really do respect all of you, I am grateful for your wisdom, and I just realized I did the very thing that I was complaining about. I really need to get a handle on my attitude (I keep blaming it on hormones, but that's pretty weak!) Let me just say that I now realize it is our differences that make us so valuable to each other. I am sincere when I say that I really hope to be more tolerant and respectful to all of you. There was no need for me to stir the pot.

  25. There is a difference between a "Fake, warm fuzzy persona" and just being a mature, civil human being. How sad is the world where people can't be nice without being called fake. I simply expressed how silly I think it is that we can't seem to make this work without people getting pissed and "leaving" every other day.
