It is ultimately up to you. We can't sugar coat it for you and say it's going to be easy. I'm just a week out so I'm going through the grunt work of the progressive diet and I'm still on 'mush'. If you have seriously tried and tried and you feel you NEED to lose the weight to really advanced your health, then the sleeve is a good option but you do have to work with your troubled relationship with food if you have one. If you feel making the necessary dietary adjustments will be doable, the surgery is no huge detriment in the grand scheme. Do you know exactly what has you scared? The diet? Pain? Recovery? If you can pin point or give us a little more direct issue to work with, that could help. At the end of the day, don't feel pressured by either side. This decision has to be yours. I think either way you'll be happy but if you go with the surgery maybe you can be a "little more happy" or maybe not. It all depends. I hope someone can come in with some better advice. Good luck!

The statistic I saw was the mortality rate was like, 0.01% for sleeve. A little less for band and a little more for bypass.

Bariatric weightloss medications
Kaze replied to Mapleleaves Welch's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Very few weight loss medications are actually safe and effective from what I've heard, nor are appetite suppressants. You'd be best off asking your doctor. But as far as your age, there are some older people who have had sleeve or bypass, so you're not necessarily alone in that venture. Hope you can find the answers you're looking for! -
My pre-op diet consisted of restricted meals. But my last "splurge" meal was at a restaurant called Fogo de Chao which my friends had planned to take me to at some point. It's a Brazilian steakhouse and they literally bring meat on skewers continuously while you have your little "chip" flipped to the green side. Flip it to the red side and they stop. It was sooooo good. I tried hard to avoid anything that wasn't Protein just because it was technically my first day of the pre-op diet.

Which food stage is cheese considered a part of? That's about the only thing I've been "craving". xD

@ Yeah, I'm living at home. My mom and I both cook sometimes here and there. I figured beyond just the consistency of hot dogs that them being processed would be a little "hefty" on the sleeve so thanks for the input! I definitely want to get some hummus, I looooove it. Lentils are suggested in my book, I'll try and get some of them and for sure eggs. I'm not a huge fan of greek yogurt though, especially not savory ones, but maybe my taste has changed. I'll have to try it. I do like this one yogurt I get at Aldi's that's salted caramel and honey greek yogurt but they don't always have it. I'm going to go see if they do.

Very normal. Seen that same amount mentioned several times before. About a quarter of an egg. I'm kind of nervous for when I start my soft foods because up until now soups have made me feel kind of satisfied but not quite "full" (but I'm not hungry in general) so I'm not sure what to expect yet!

I'm a week post-op and I am "interested" in foods but I'm not hungry nor am I craving anything. I guess by interested I mean there's foods I know I love that I'd love to take a bite of because I know I like them but I don't actually feel like I need to eat anything. It's pretty neat how the surgery helped me differentiate between head hunger ("desire") vs actual physical hunger.

Butter chicken after gastric sleeve
Kaze replied to SammyVP's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In response to the person mentioning it's not a good weight loss food, I think one thing that gets lost on people like us really trying to diet is that anything in moderation is acceptable. It's knowing when you're having too much. Considering it's chicken, you can still count it as high Protein so you know, trading off less nutritional benefit for some in another area. As long as you're not overindulging and having things every day, you'll do A-OK. We shouldn't convince ourselves that there are things we just can't have because we're trying to lose weight. I think that's a bad relationship to have with food personally. I think it's far more mature to know your restrictions with certain less-than-ideal foods and learn how to eat them within your guidelines than it is to say no way Jose flat out. But that's me, I've always held a "nothing is not allowed" perspective and I know I abused it sometimes, but I think this is a great time to work on it and be responsible with that motto. -
Is anyone required to go to therapy weekly by your surgeon?
Kaze replied to TanairyVSG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They're not necessary, but a doctor's input is always one to consider. My doctor's nurse suggested going to the support meetings and I might try and make it out to some and I electively want to continue to see my therapist (who is my therapist from dialysis and transplant, as well). -
After surgery, when did....
Kaze replied to bini120's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 days post op as well and I haven't taken any of my bandages off yet...I'm a worry-wart like that. My incisions themselves don't hurt at all, but my abdomen is still sore but noticeably better with each sleep. I'm not sure if you can notice swelling in the sleeve? Can you? I know I feel good other than I have some rumblies some times that are uncomfortable. I wouldn't be surprised if by a week or so I'll be back to feeling as normal as pre-op. This seems like a pretty simple recovering procedure. -
I feel "social media bullies" is a bit of a stretch. But yeah, I'd really just follow your doc's plan. It doesn't hurt to ask them though. Letting them know you're feeling up to it does help them gauge healing and what not I'm sure to some degree. But yeah, for the first few months post op, I feel it's super important to baby our sleeves just so they get the healing time they need. You can probably be a little "riskier" (for lack of a better word) when you're 3, 4, 5, 6+ months out.

Hello friendlies, I was sleeved on June 21st and boy was I not expecting the level of discomfort it brings to the table while recuperating. I've had plenty-a-surgery in my day and this one is just awkward because it feels like pressure in the abdomen/diaphragm area. It's starting to get better, though, so that's good and per my scale I've already lost 20 pounds somehow. My only complaint is I'm still not getting in a lot of Water and I'm not up to food right now. Also, my Protein powder is the ONE thing so far that I believe this surgery has affected the taste of. It's vanilla and it's just baaad right now. Does anyone have any pureed high protein recipes they could link me to? I hope once I can do milks (almond, soy, skim) after about two weeks than it'll be more tolerable. My doctor said my sleeve was very successful but also difficult because we went into it knowing I've got a ton of abdominal scarring from previous surgeries...I originally had told him that if he couldn't do it laprascopically than he shouldn't do it at all because I need to put as little risk to my kidney transplant as possible. He said it took about an hour and forty five minutes. Now that I'm post, I'm focusing on getting in AT LEAST my 64oz of water (and protein when I can get something better) so I can keep my transplant nice and happy. Food noticeably made me "non-hungry" but water just feels weird going down. Anyway, thanks all for the pre-op stories and tips and tricks and all that stuff! This forum is super helpful and I hope to stay on it for a while if not indefinitely.

Does anyone's goal weight still leave them "overweight" or "obese"?
Kaze replied to provenzee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unless you don't follow your plan or put in the work to be more active there is no reason to settle for less this early out. I believe I hit my goal in part because I saw no reason why I couldn't. Stay focused and positive. Oh I'm just talking about some people's "goal weight" as in where their body naturally stalls towards the end of the journey is highly variable on the BMI scale, and yet they're perfectly healthy at that weight. I imagine my ideal weight will be closer to overweight rather than smack dab in the middle of the good BMI scale. The BMI scale isn't too flexible in that regard. Yeah, I hate sleeping on my back for extended periods of time but it is uncomfortable right now any other way. 4 days post here. I'm sure within a few weeks it'll be good...probably going to wait until the all clear at 6 weeks to try stomach sleeping. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

When you can take pills again?
Kaze replied to specialkiddomom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have immunosuppressants to take so I literally had to take horse pills a few hours after surgery. Made me nauseous but it was doable. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I'm 4 days post op and I'm fairly confident I can be drinking more Water. I take it slow knowing the capacity isn't there but it is definitely a 3 on the scale of difficulty. If you're like me and really babying your sleeve, you have to consciously think to drink every 10-15 minutes or so. But it is definitely feasible! 3) Not quite at a food stage where I can address that question. 4) I have not, I still love my water! 5) 1 being super simple and 10 being the hardest ever, a 3-4. Does anyone's goal weight still leave them "overweight" or "obese"?
Kaze replied to provenzee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I thought most people set their own goal weight...do your surgeons help you come up with one? Mine didn't. I arrived at my goal weight based on a BMI of 24.5 which is right there in healthy territory but I'm sure I may have to live with being "overweight". Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

If it makes you feel any better, I did it and I'm 19. I know this will be good for me in the long run towards better health. Also you don't have to completely cut out those things, but you do have to focus on Protein as much as possible. You'll be able to enjoy foo, just in restricted and more reasonable proportions...in my opinion, having to cherish what little portions we have will allow us to enjoy food even more.
