U can get a large can at sam's club! You'll use after surgery too. I like chocolate, vanilla, be creative with artificial flavoring. Make big bowl sugar free Jello to snack on plus after surgery. Just remember to make ur Protein daily, very important

    Quick start

No! I did classes at Mayo for over 2 1/2 months before surgery. Sessions with psych & nutrition. I believe the classes are essential, there is so much to learn. Plus it's a requirement by Mayo bariactric & general surgery. Personally I have never heard of anyone seeing the Dr & scheduling surgery 10 days later. Here's a great web site by Tufts Medical Center. It tells you the diet you need to follow from surgery day to 6 months. https://www.tuftsmedicalcenter.org/~/media/Brochures/TuftsMC/Patient Care Services/Departments and Services/Weight and Wellness Center/GBP Diet Manual12611.ashx Best of luck to you!

    Losing Weight Pre-Op

My requirement was to do a liquid diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery. I had to use Opitfast 500. I lost 12lbs. It's expensive but really works. The least expensive place to buy was EBay. You can do it! You can lose 15lbs in 3 months!!! The more you lose helps you after surgery. Plus gets you mentally prepared for your new beginning in your life. Its not easy after surgery. In my case the first 2 months were very difficult. I had a hard time getting in all my Protein & liquids. Now I feel great & finally feel human. I've lost 42lbs & go to the gym 3 times a week & PT 2 x week. YOU CAN DO IT & YOU'LL REAP THE REWARDS!!!!

    Alcohol

I was told before & after by surgeon to not have carbonated drinks. I could however have a glass of diet ginger ale BUT you need to pour & set for an hour & then drink. It's the same premise as using a straw, air bubbles which can be very painful & expands pouch. Can cause stomach upset, nausea, and excess gas. You can damage your stomach pouch if extreme nausea occurs immediately after the operation

    Straws...

Just found this The reason we aren’t allowed to use straws or chew gum (I don’t know about you, but I was big on BOTH), is that it causes air to enter our pouch. Doesn’t seem detrimental… until you get the teeniest, most painful air bubbles in your pouch & have to wait for them to either come up or work their way down & out.Another reason is that the air takes up space in our pouch which we could be filling with Protein, but we feel full, so we don’t get that extra bit of protein.Even if your straw is in your cup & you have plenty of liquid as well, when you draw on that straw, before the liquid makes its way into your mouth, you’d think there’s nothing in there, but that “nothing” is AIR. I’ve had my surgery (6 wks ago) & yes, I’ve cheated with a straw several times, usually while driving. Sometimes I get lucky, but it’s the times I suffered that air that has made me swear off my beloved straws FOR GOOD. That pain made me feel like a gassy, colicky baby. As for gum, once in a great while & ONLY to try & calm nausea & if a mint is not available… and I only chew it long enough to get the calming effect of the mint, then I just kind of tuck it between my cheek & gums.Carbonated drinks are also off limits for the same reason: air. (Yes, once in a while I’ll also self-torture & sneak a sip or two…but not via straws! LOL).I don’t understand why your doc didn’t explain all this, but I hope I was able to help.Best of luck on your surgery! And if they happen to send a straw on your trays – there was one on EVERY tray I got, despite the sign on the door

    Straws...

I had my bypass 11/28 it took a 6+ weeks before I felt somewhat normal. Doing well now I do gym 3 times week & physical therapy 2 week. I've lost 41lbs, 35 to go to meet goal. It's slot harder than I thought it would be

    Straws...

Just found on google Also, avoid carbonated beverages during the first six months or so after your surgery. Carbonation does not stretch out your stomach, but it can cause gas that may be painful. Avoid the use of straws. With a straw, you can drink large amounts of Fluid without realizing it and overfill your stomach pouch.

    Straws...

I wonder too, didn't ask just accepted. I do know it has to do about air.. I'm going to email them tomorrow & ask! How r u doing overall

    Straws...

I was told never to use a straw because of air intake in your pouch, I know if I drink too much, gulp I will really get air. Did they tell u it was ok to use a straw??
  21. Normal, it took me 2 months before I started feeling normal. My surgeon said it was normal & some people take severl months. You have to realize they took your insides and twisted them all around! I also had a hard time with Protein intake, took a hile to get in because after surgery I could not stand the sight, smell of protein shakes! Actually I did not like anything which is strange because before surgery I loved everything! Baby steps you have the rest of your life!! Take it slow, it will be worth it.

What did you ask the surgeon?

My husband asked how many surgeries he had done when he was in Chicago & at MAYO where he currently resides, he had done over 400. I wanted a surgeon who did the procedure robotically, which he did. I asked Dr Eilli to explain exactly what he was going to do. I obviously knew I was having bypass but did not know details. He showed me pictures & explained the procedure in detail. He did not rush the visit and explained everything thoroughly..

    Extreme Weight Loss

I am 10 weeks post op, I've lost 42 lbs. it has been a lot more difficult than I anticipated. I got really sick 1 month out & had to go to ER. The Dr was fabulous, I told him about feeling awful all time. I couldn't drink or eat. I loved all food, now I basically do not like anything?!? He explained I would feel this way for at least 4+ months. Also said my new pouch & brain are also adjusting to the changes. My biggest issue is getting enough Fluid. Sipping takes forever, if I try to take a normal drink it upsets my stomach, too much air. I had my 2 month visit with general surgery & nutrition. Labs are great inflammation down. Started exercising at the gym 3 times a week, PT twice a week. Good news is I was size XXL, size 20, now a L size 14! Its a learning process!
