  1. CBT research is proving quite successful with certain addictive behaviors, that would be my first stop if I were looking into professional help. Remember that dysfunctional behaviors need to be replaced with new behaviors and that setbacks do not equal failure. Good luck to you!

    C25K

I started with this app and I did it every day until I hit week 4, then I needed a day in between. It does start easy but gets way harder!!

    For the 45+ crowd

when I was losing I thought the surgery aged me, especially when I started to lose hair. I'm at gw now and I do look better than when I was losing. I notice it most on my neck and upper chest area. On the bright side I have a visible collarbone for the first time in my adult life so may be it distracts people from my old neck!
  5. If you can continue down the road you're on, then you should absolutely do that!! Surgery was my last resort. Good for you!

Don't be the Chicken & Cheetos Lady

Thank you for the post. Did the clients that you discuss give permission to post their anecdotal stories here? This concerns me.

    Mom or Dad sleevers?

I had surgery last summer and at the time had two boys going into 11th grade, a freshman in high school, and a 5th grader. They all know. They have encouraged me to be active and have been cheerleaders for me every step. My kids all do sports (cross country, soccer, swimming, basketball) and before wls I spent a lot of time taking them to the gym...now I go with them. it's strengthened my relationship with the older kids for sure. I can keep up with them!
  8. My emotional eating was always the product of stress. Exercise is a great safeguard against stress, even if you don't really like it. I took up running, which I never thought I'd enjoy. I also knit, which keeps me busy when I might otherwise be bored. I am almost a year post op and below gw for some time (I haven't updated my stats but I'm at 142 now, size 8). Staying busy is key. After wls you control food, not the other way around, if you work at it.
  9. Glad it went well!! I teach psychology and even I was nervous about the idea of an evaluation!
  10. You are right that ketosis throws everything off balance; that is how you lose weight, by upsetting homeostasis. There are multiple ways to do that, ketosis is one. When I opted to have wls I was choosing to put my life in the hands of my surgical team, made up of experts. I follow the plan they've established will work for me. If I could lose weight and keep it off on my own I would have, but I failed at it. I'm happy to leave it to the experts.

    Skinny Bucket List

Great idea!! The last thing on my list is to take salsa dance lessons. The nsvs are very rewarding!
  12. Hi all. I'm close to the 1 year mark for surgery. I'm at my goal weight and I'm working on my stretch goal (which has to do with fitness but will result in a few more lbs gone). Since surgery I've eliminated some foods (no fries since June of last year!) and I typically hit my protein and carb goals. I've had great success but I find myself craving fruits and veggies and I don't have room for them. Two of my children are vegetarians and I've been giving serious thought of eliminating red meat, chicken from my diet. Much of my protein intake now is not animal-based so it would not be a huge stretch. I would love to hear from anyone who is at gw and has a plant-based diet. I'm looking at ways to figure out the transition as well as how to limit carbs...and cook for a blended family (omnivores and vegetarians!). I do cook now for the family but definitely could expand my menu.

    Stall at 8 months WTH

600 calories seems far too low. How are you able to get that much protein in with so few calories? I hit a stall at 8 months as well and increased calories (I eat 1300 a day, average) and really focused on water intake. I was able to get over the stall but it took a few weeks. Good luck!

How do you view overweight people now that your thin?

I didn't change friends when I lost weight. Weight doesn't define who we are, people are complex. As for dating, my husband has never been overweight and is fit. He has loved and supported me when I was fat and still does now that I'm healthy. I feel empathy for overweight but I also feel sad when people I know pursue fad diets that I know will not yield long term results. Wls stopped the crazy train of desperate attempts and I wish other people would be more open minded about wls.

    Thoughts and fears

It sounds as if you have a good handle on this. I'm 10 months post op and would do it again, but years earlier than I did. I had surgery on a Tuesday and returned to work the following Monday. My work is also cognitively demanding and I was tired the first week, but able to keep up. I believe staying busy helps me heal and it was a good decision for me; although your caloric intake will be dramatically reduced if you have surgery, you will be able to feed your brain. You will notice a reduction in energy level, which will increase over time. With weight loss you will be able to participate in exercise as your body mass becomes more manageable for your joints. The amount of exercise will depend a lot on your discipline and commitment. I had a very easy recovery and was able to achieve a healthy BMI with surgery, diet, and exercise. For me, the surgery wasn't a magic trick but the tool I needed to be successful with diet and exercise. Unfortunately I still have high blood pressure but it is lower than it was before surgery. My other health related issues have resolved. Good luck!
  16. I'm in maintainance phase and learning how to consume more normal meals. I usually drink protein shake in the morning for the reason you've stated-- frees up some real estate in my stomach. Lunch is often tuna salad or lentil soup, and maybe veggies and hummus. Dinner is whatever my family has, but I adjust amounts accordingly. I use an app to track my protein, carbs, etc. As per my plan, I adjust protein and carbs as needed to stay at my current weight and this allows me more ways to eat a healthy variety of food than when I was in the wl stages.
  17. Oh wow! I went to the doctor today and she told me to stay away from the gym today. After seeing your pics I am definitely getting myself up early to hit it hard. Looking tough!!
  18. My family knows- husband and 4 kids. My sister, my mom, and two friends. We recently had one of those slim-down contests at work and two teams approached me to be on their teams and I declined. Losing weight is hard and I don't want to give someone a sense of false hope. Lots of people ask me how I lost weight and after I tell them my dietary habits (which are pretty much like every other wls patient, low carb and high protein), most people announce they aren't disciplined enough. One person asked me outright if I'd had surgery; she's my wbff and I told her the truth. She hasn't told anyone. I may tell others eventually but for now this is it.

    Best Weight Chart

I just used the Smart BMI calculator and it says that because I'm in a normal range for my age and height, there is no benefit to pursuing further weight loss. Very interesting as it's the only calculator that I've seen that allows me to input my age.
  20. This is a reminder to me to treasure my second chance through wls, I wanted to share. A.coworker needed to lose 17 lbs in five weeks in order to qualify for special training (she's in the military). She dropped the weight through plastic wraps, zero carbs, steam room, something called laser Lipo, and a weight loss drug she bought in Mexico-- some kind of amphetamine . She met the weight but was unable to do complete her physical training because she collapsed. She went to the hospital and her heart is arrythmic and the IVs for fluid have been difficult because she is dehydrated. She had a staph infection and developed energy to the antibiotic she was given. It's awful! Before wls I did several unhealthy things to lose weight. If I hadn't had wls I might still be trying things that I knew wouldn't work. If you are thinking about wls, please know that it can finally end the crazy train of fad diets and desperation if you use it as it was meant to be used.

    Bariatric tools?

I bought a plate for bariatric patients but never used it. I do use my kitchen scale every day.

    Ladies only please!!!!!!

What about a mirena IUD? I have one and don't have periods anymore, just light spotting a few times a year. I initially got it because of heavy periods. It's been great for me.
  23. When I got married I dieted my way to 155 and was a size 14 (I am 5 5). After wls when I hit 155 I was a size 10. At 145 I'm an 8. If I get to 135 I'm guessing I would be a 6, whereas if I hadn't had wls I think at the same weights I would be bigger sizes.

    Low BMI sleevers... results?

I was BMI 34 and am normal range now. The lower your initial weight is, the more likely you are to be in a healthy weight range. No regrets here!
