    Life After My Sleeve

@@CarlAllen_95, fantastic new hobby. I'm also spending so much more time exercising -- because I finally can. My family is very active and being able to keep up with them is a joy. I'm sad that you've lost some of your social circle but you will develop a new one. One side effect of wls that I didn't know about was the social aspect. My good friends are still there of course, but there is a category of people who seem uncomfortable with me now that I've lost weight and another category of people who now want to hang out when they didn't before. People are pretty complicated sometimes. So glad that you are doing well and putting those new kicks to good use. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. My loss is about the same. I'm very happy with my slower rate of loss now, 2-3 lbs a week. It's fun to lost 9 lbs in one week but now that I've slowed I feel confident that slow and steady wins the race. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Any 7/14's- post op?

The exchange student is great. He's really friendly and is getting along great with all of my kids... Going to be a great year. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Any 7/14's- post op?

I weighed in yesterday at my one month anniversary. I'm down a total of 24.6 lbs which includes 4 lbs lost on my pre op diet. First two weeks or so I lost a little more than a pound a day. I'm at a good rate of 2-3 lbs/week right now, and so happy with that rate. I'm exercising (ran/walked 4 miles this morning-- I could walk 10-12 miles before surgery but could not jog to the end of the street, so this is big!). I have acid almost daily and am taking Prilosec. When I've lost 30 lbs my primary doctor will see if I can get off my BP meds. Lab work shows I'm not insulin resistant anymore. I'm grateful beyond my ability to express for this surgery and for this forum. Plus-- we have a German exchange student who is living with us this year, he arrived earlier this week and is super athletic. He hugged me at the airport and said "you don't look much like your photo from June. I was expecting someone rounder. You are really quite pretty in a mom way!" This is the best thing I've ever done done for myself. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Liquid Diet Tips?

My pre op diet helped shrink my liver for surgery, sure, but even more it helped me psychologically move away from food. I stuck with clear broth and Protein shakes. It wasn't pleasant but it wasn't impossible. My post op diet was very easy because I practiced compliance in the pre op stage. My tip is to embrace it and use it as a starting place for your new relationship with food. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I'm not a runner-- yet! After being cleared for exercise I'm alternating swimming and attempting to run. The first day I could jog for one tenth of a mile. Now I can jog a third of a mile. I alternate walking and jogging... I'm stupid slow but I enjoy it and will get better. My issue is that I am not sure how to coordinate my breathing and I think I'm losing oxygen because I am breathing in through my mouth. Do you breathe, hold, exhale? 9. Yesterday I took my kids to buy some things at Old Navy. I did not know my size, because most of my clothes prior to surgery (7/12) had elastic which is quite forgiving (pants at least). Earlier that day I culled my closet and got rid of two bags of size 18,20,22. 1X, 2x that are too big. Other things I can pin or alter. Anyway....at ON my daughter told me I should try on some jeans that were on clearance and... For really the first time in a decade..:. I can wear a size not followed by an X!! I'm comfortably in a regular size! I bought the $10 clearance jeans and felt like amazing. Can't tell you my actual weight loss because I only weigh twice a month but I'm losing well! Any runners?

My surgeon's office provided the c25k app! Yes, it is great for someone like me who has never run before! I have been doing my own thing, so to speak, wrt running, but after previewing the app I'm planning to start that to build to a sustained level of activity. Did you use it? My surgeon's office suggests every other day with the app and doing either flexibility or strength on the days between. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Any 7/14's- post op?

Sleeved 7/12. At my two week weigh in I was down 16 (lost 3 of the lbs the week before surgery). Am not weighing more than once a week. I hit a stall last week, I think. Will find out for certain on Aug 12 when I weigh again My plan is 2 weeks full liquids, 1 week mushies, then "anything you can cut with a fork" and as of this week, introducing new foods to see what I tolerate. I am wanting to eat carrots and raw bell peppers but worry my stomach won't like that. Otherwise I am between 60-85 grams of Protein and less than 25 carbs/day. Most days I'm between 600-750 calories. I was cleared for exercise at two weeks and have been alternating swimming and trying to jog . I am using the c25k app which my surgeon's office provided and I'm making progress. I am weight training but nothing more than 30 pounds. I was off work for a week and a day before I chose to go back. I'm a teacher so thus far I've been attending or presenting workshops. I hope when the students return I can stay focused on hydration! My energy is great and I feel really good. It's been really easy to walk away from unhealthy foods, probably because I feel so much better about myself. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  12. I take the Vitamins at night and the calcium in the morning and late afternoon. Does anyone take B1? The ones I have make me gag, pills are large and smelly. I'm thinking of B multi Patches if they have B12 and 1. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Eating out

My husband accepted an invitation to eat out with some family friends at an Italian place (he accepted for the whole fam). I'm not on any food restrictions but Pasta, pizza seems like an enormously bad idea. They have wings on the menu that I can order without sauce, and salads topped with chicken. No kids' menu. Wings or salad? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. My nut says most meats have roughly 7g protein/ ounce but some cuts of beef have more. I never ate much beef before surgery so I stick with a lot of chicken and fish. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. Did you use a food processor or blender? I found that meats were much easier when ground. I had a week of serious food aversions after surgery (July 12) but made myself eat and got over it. What about Beans, yogurt, etc? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Ok so how bad is this gonna hurt?

@@DaisyAmy, sounds like you didn't have morphine. I'm allergic to morphine so I had Tylenol 3 given to me the night of surgery. It was awful and I was more worried about not keeping it down than about the pain. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

First post op appointment with surgeon

Great news! I love hearing that people are recovering nicely. As for Protein, I'd check with your nut. My plan is 65-80 grams a day. It took me 3 days to work up to that amount but now it's easy. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Ok so how bad is this gonna hurt?

On a scale of 1-10, a 4 the day of surgery, then a 3 for a couple of days. I didn't need pain meds (they gave them the first night once and that was it). I walked around within an hour of coming out of anasthesia and followed my surgeon's order to the letter. He specifically told me to do as much as I could when I had energy, rest when fatigued, and resume normal walking etc within 4 days. I had two natural childbirths, a c-section, gallbladder removal, and ovarian surgery prior to this. I am no stranger to pain. I think that your own level of anxiety has a lot to do with pain threshold. I'm not fearful of pain but I was fearful of complications so I did all I could to minimize the risk of something happening. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. In the pureed stage I wouldn't eat more than 2 oz. If you eat too much, you will know. It's important to eat slowly, and when you start to feel uncomfortable, stop (for me, if I get a tightness in my throat- not heartburn- I'm full)...overeating is awful.

    Length of hospital stay?

One night. Surgery at 2 PM, went home at 8 PM the next day. Recovery was really fast and I was back at work after taking off 6 days.

    Telling coworkers and friends

I don't think you need to provide any information to someone who may not be supportive at this point. I am down 2 dress sizes since being sleeved 7/12 but it's not such a huge change that people are shocked. The bariatric team told me I'll likely level out at 2-3 lb/week once the rapid loss slows, and that's a nice, healthy rate of loss. Someone today did ask me what dietary changes.. and I told her no sugar, no rice, no bread, 80 g protein/day, etc. She shrugged and said, "that seems like way too much work!" The truth is that after surgery you will have to work at it, and telling people it's diet and exercise is not a lie- the surgery is a tool that has to be used correctly.
  25. I was also insulin resistant before surgery and my BP was out of control. I was sleeved 7/12 weighing right at 202, after losing some weight on pre op diet. The last time I weighed was 186. I won't weigh again until Aug 12. Weighing obsessively was not mentally healthy for me, so twice a month is it for now. I have energy and I feel great; I started exercising as soon as I was cleared to do so and love that I can do more. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
