  1. IF my insurance covered WLS, my max out of pocket would have been $6000. That's a $3500 deductible plus 20% of the rest until it hit $6000. But instead, I had to self pay because my insurance (which costs me $350/month) doesn't cover WLS. So I saved every penny I Could, including forgoing vacations for 2 1/2 years, went to Mexico and paid $6500.

    Obamacare sucks @ss.

I know someone personally that is getting surgery through the Affordable care act! Her surgery is this month. She asked which plan covers weight loss surgery before she purchased insurance. It does pay, you just have to pick the right coverage.

No, it doesn't always pay. There are absolutely NO individual ACA policies that cover WLS in Idaho. And before ACA I had $30 dr visit copays, my deductible was $1500 and my monthly premium was $220. So I stand by my original sentiment.
It's your state's fault. If the law in your state says bariatric surgery is considered an essential health benefit than it must be covered under your obamacare health insurance. Idaho doesn't consider it an essential health benefit. Talk to your lawmakers.

The real problem is the fact that the people deciding healthcare policies that impact you and me don't have the faintest notion what they are doing. It's the most predictable thing in the world that a bunch of knucklehead politicians monkeying around with healthcare can only make things less efficient, more expensive, and overall progressively crappier. It's like asking your surgeon to run an airline, or like asking a chef to do surgery. Predictably disastrous.

That said, my insurance was great, although I suspect that had a lot to do with the surgeon's staff knowing the plans and other clearing doctors, and how to expedite the process. I had surgery 2 weeks ago and haven't even paid a copay yet. So I'm not complaining personally. I'm thankful

  2. I'm 15 days out, and I haven't felt this good in years. I'm down 33 lbs from my highest weight, and had no complications or tolerance issues. Very little actual hunger lets me eat what I need to and I'm not a slave to my stomach anymore. For almost all of us (excluding car wrecks, plane crashes and lightning strikes) this surgery means we're going to live longer and healthier lives!

  3. @@KristenLe No - but I think I am going to make one. I don't want to start off on the wrong foot. I have a heart condition and was seeing their nutritionist during preop stuff so I didn't have to see the one at the bariatric clinic.

Good idea if you really feel confused, but remember that the point of the diet is to shrink your liver. So do your best, stay away from fatty stuff, and don't stress. I think a lot fewer people are actually "perfect" on their pre-surgery diet than those who claim to have been. I sure wasn't and I still lost about 18 lbs. before surgery.

But seriously, do try your best because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Good luck on your surgery!

  4. I was eating mashed cauliflower about 3 days out of surgery. Almost always do that at home and, if you add a little cream cheese, butter and blend it well enough, it tastes almost indistinguishable from potatoes.

Had a couple bites of the real stuff the other day in the IKEA cafeteria. Came with my salmon. Good idea to go slow...whether potatoes expand in your stomach or not, it sure feels like they do

  5. My favorite right now is to get spicy Thai fish from my neighborhood Chinese place (I know, but they do a great Thai fish). That has veggies I can't eat, but if I put it all in a blender, it comes out great, and it doesn't even need rice. Great way to get my veggies without a problem.

I think you could do that with most Chinese dishes.

  6. FYI -

"In a 2013 study, researchers wanted to find out if there is an ideal bougie size. To do this, they did a search of medical literature published in the last 5 years and analyzed 32 publications involving 4,999 patients.

    What they found:

The use of bougies 40F and larger had a leak rate of 0.92% and excess weight loss of 69.2%.

The use of bougies smaller than 40F had a leak rate of 2.67% and excess weight loss of 60.7%."

  7. I got sleeved on the 8th. I'm feeling pretty darn good and finding I can eat pretty much anything, just a lot less of it. My surgeon ok'ed pretty much anything mash-able with a fork, and so far I've tolerated everything I've tried pretty well. Except a beef skewer I tried, which wasn't mash-able and which tasted great but went down like shoe leather.

  8. I am trying to only weigh the 16th an 1st of the month. I know if I am not careful, I can become obsessive and be disappointed easily in the scales. I am hoping I will see progress.

I think that's a good idea. I'm 8 days out, and Mon, Tues, and We'd this week I got heavier. Stressed me out, but I KNOW I can't be putting on fat, because I'm eating about 900 cals/day. So now I'm only going to weigh once a week.

Ok ok ok....I'll TRY to only weigh once a week

  9. I'm doing well on both I think. I started tracking everything 2 days ago, and I've been just over 100g Protein. I've been drinking shakes and Protein Water. They said if it has Water in it, it counts as water. So on that basis (16oz Protein drinks, etc) I'm hitting 70oz or so.

And good luck with your sleeve! Every day I wake up feeling a little better
