Worried-People Trying To Talk Me Out of Surgery
Nikkoli110 replied to Nikkoli110's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks so much everyone, all your posts are great! I feel so great being able to come here for support! Thank you really so much. I did talk more with my mom and even showed her some statistics online, showing her that after the band I'll be much more healthy and future pregnancies would be better than me at my weight now. I know what I want, and I know the band is right for me. I just need to show my mom and DH the good things about it and not to worry about the dangerous complications, seeing as though they are very unlikely to happen. Thank you guys so much!!! -
Worried-People Trying To Talk Me Out of Surgery

Hello everyone, I'm not banded yet, but in the pre-op testing stage. I've just done the sleep test and found out I have sleep apnea. I'm 5'4" and 246 lbs. I'm 24 years old. Just married, too! My doctor back in May discussed my options and suggested I have lap band sugery. So now I have done some of the tests, and told some family members about my desicion. My dad is extremly excited, my mom is too but also a little nervous about it. Now a family friend who is an RN wants to talk to me about it, and was all over my mom about it on Saturday night. She was telling me she's seen 3 patients die from the surgery (didn't hear if it was the surgery or afterwards) and that the band can cause scar tissue around where they place the band, and that the stomach will stay that way, and that you can't get the proper nutrition. I was extremly excited about the band, and now I'm extremly worried!! Anyone hear about issues like that? TIA!! -

Thank you everyone for your responses! I also thought that she may be exagerating or something, I find it strange too, but she seemed really concerned and wanted to talk to me so badly about it. Her main concern that she told me was something to the effect of the scar tissue building up around the band and then it staying that way, and because I do want to have children in the future, she said I may have issues getting enough nutrition and then having issues with being pregnant, but I've researched it and see that they can take the fill out and things would be fine. I do feel better "talking" with you guys, thank you so much!! Now I just need to get my mom back on board! -
female only Really Personal Question - TMI - Incontinence?
Nikkoli110 posted a topic in The Gals' Room
I really have no place to ask this, I'm super embarassed, and have been on webmd all night, and I feel so weird! First off, I'm 24, and in the testing stages before lapband. For a while, I've always had that "need to pee NOW" issue. A few times, I've accidently slightly peed my pants on the way to the bathroom, before I could get my pants down. Now tonight for the first time since I was say, maybe 4, I peed my pants, like, totally. Thank God I was outside and no one saw it. I've had some tiny pain in my lower abdomen, but I have IBS and I've had ovarian cysts my whole life, and I've kind of gotten used to it. I'm going to be calling my doc on Monday and trying to get in right away, but I just feel totally ashamed, astonished, and embarased. I'm only 24, I would think, ok maybe if I've had a baby, thats expected, maybe if I was much older, than its ok, but I'm 24?? I just was wondering if there is anyone on here who has ever had the issue or has any advice, I just don't have anywhere to ask this because I'm so embarrased! Thanks for listening! -
Really Personal Question - TMI - Incontinence?
Nikkoli110 replied to Nikkoli110's topic in The Gals' Room
Thanks. I actually have been thinking about it more for a few minutes, and I've really noticed that lately (past few months) I've started having to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, not in the "oh no i have to go now" but just going. Strange. -
Thanks for the welcome! Kim...that is so great to hear someone else going to Dr. Roye! I'm going to have a ton of questions for you! I did have my appointment today, it went well. They are suposed to be contacting Blue Cross tomorow, and she said we will hopefully hear back in a few days to a week. She said she's pretty sure I'll be covered just fine, since I have some issues due to my weight. I definatly don't like driving to RIH though, I got lost, went into the wrong parking garage, and drove around for 10 minutes waiting to find a spot! Auuh I hate driving in Providence! I did get the small ammount of info that she gave me today, which most of it I already knew. I did have one question, what the heck is the phsych evaluation for? What do they do? And also, what is the pre-op diet like for him? Thanks!!

Hi my name is Nikki and I'm new here. I've been lurking since February when my primary care doc recomended Lap Band to me. I was shocked at first, didn't think I was even close to being a canidate for surgery for my weight, but I am! I have my first appointment with the surgeon today. I'm extremly nervous, but excited at the same time. I have my whole family and future husband's support, but I'm just very nervous. I'm not sure what to expect for the first meeting. I'm going to be seeing Dr. Roye through Rhode Island Hospital. Right now my weight is at 246, and I'm 5'4", so totally looking to get down to at least 160, I would be extremly happy with that. I miss being able to play soccer and softball, and I know I need to loose weight before we even start to think about having children. Any tips for the first appointment? What to expect?
