    Nutritional counseling

Nutrition is a HUGE part of post-op and will be for the rest of your life. You will be amazed at how little you will eat post-op. The little food you eat needs to be well balanced. It will also be critical to follow your supplement regiment (Iron, Calcium, multi and B12). I'm 17 weeks post op and became deficient in Vitamin D and iron. I began taking Vitamin D and doubled my iron. I'm feeling much better (energy wise). My nurse told me the liquid diet one week prior to surgery is to allow your liver to shrink. I have a fatty liver so my surgeon ordered a liver scan. He also looked at liver during procedure. The "fat" from liver will go away while I loose weight. United healthcare

UHC required a supervised 6 month diet through my primary. Had lots of pre-op testing including a Pysch Eval. All well worth it. Surgeon's office handled everything. Good luck. Still glad I made choice 17 weeks post-op. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. My A1C was at 7.4 pre-op and I was taking 1000mg of Metformin twice a day. One month post-op my A1C is 6.2 and my Metformin had been cut in half. I am now 17 weeks post op and will have Diabetic check with primary in Sep. I'm hoping I soon will be off meds and my A1C will be lower. My goal for having the surgery is to get off many meds and get healthy! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Allergic reaction

One year before surgery I had a reaction to an antibiotic (hives) that I had always taken. Make sure to let your surgeon know and of course your primary (all your medical doctors should be notified). Your Anesthesiologist will meet with you day of procedure and make sure to tell them. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    So weak and tired

@@baconsher, I guess I should feel a bit better knowing I'm not alone...but I don't. We have a trip planned for 3 weeks to Europe. I thought for sure I would be fit to travel but if I feel like this I won't have energy to walk about towns and cities. Ugh, I'm so frustrated. My husband says I should push myself but it takes so much energy just to do regular things. What does your surgeon have to say? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    New and anxious!

Congratulations! Your BMI is very low for weight loss surgery. In addition to a 6 mo supervised diet through my primary, I also had to have various tests (stress, pulmonary, colonoscopy) as well as a Pysch Eval to be approved by Insurance company, they are the final approval (at least from what I know here in the States). Good luck to you! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  9. I gave my Magic Bullet to Goodwill, I couldn't stand the sight of it. I use Inspire Caramel Latte whey Protein. I mix with cold decaf coffee and 1% milk no blender necessary. It's my daily special coffee drink that I have every morning. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    So weak and tired

Thanks @@KristenLe and @@Skydom for your feedback. I've been eating fruit but hardly any whole grains. I barely get to the starch after Protein, fruit and vegetables. I take Nascobal B12 nose spray once a week. My B12 was not deficient. I took Vitamins years prior to surgery. Today I worked out 30 mins with my Trainer at 9:30 AM and I was tired the remainder of day. My thyroid has been checked and is ok. I'm just so frustrated with this. I guess I need to be patient. So weak and tired

Yes! I'm 15 weeks post op and I'm still very fatiguedy. I expected to have a lot of energy and I just run out of fuel. I'm better than I was after a month and after 2 months but I'm so frustrated. I'm deficient in Iron and Vitamin D. My surgeon doubled my iron and started me on 2000 international units of Vitamin D. No change after a week. My Nutritionist told me to stay at 60g of Protein (I'm 5'2") and to increase my carbs but she didn't give me a range on carbs. A man in my monthly support group meetings said he didn't get energy until his 6 month anniversary. Both my surgeon and my Primary tell me to be patient (post op MAJOR surgery) so I'll be patient. It's extremely frustrating. A friend told me she experienced fatigue while on the Atkins diet (high protein, very low carb). Maybe some of us need more carbs? Post op gear

I've never heard of a belly band so I had to google it. I would consult your surgeon if it would be ok. I hAd very little discomfort post surgery and never had to use prescribed pain meds. Good luck to you and congrats! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. It would be tough not having fresh fruit in my diet. I'm 15 weeks out and have tried everything with no issues (all berries, melons, nectarines, peaches, cherries, etc). Go for it. I do miss fresh orange juice. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Uncooperative bowels

I'm 14 weeks post op. I was constipated too during first month but it lasted only a week or so. I increased my Water and that seemed to do the trick. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

"You had that fat people surgery"

I was worried that people would think that so I've told just a few close friends and family. My husband who is a wonderful supporter tells me all the time that he doesn't know how I do it. I don't care at this point what people say or think, I did this for me and I'm so glad I did. I've lost 48% of fat and I'm so proud. 52% to go! Stay focused. 16. I hit 3 months on Jul-13 and I'm doing fine EXCEPT for low energy. It's so frustrating but my surgeon and my primary Doctor both tell me to be patient. I'm deficient in D and Iron so increasing supplements. My Nut told me to stay at 60 grams of Protein since I'm only 5'2". Also was told to increase carbs for energy. So, my portion sizes are about 1/4 cup each of protein and veg/fruit and IF I can get in a starch but rarely. I know I can eat more but I still eat faster than I should so I get full fast. 18. I just had labs done at 3 months. Deficient in D and Iron, B12 was good. Have to take extra Iron Vitamin and add Vitamin D. Still low energy. Have to increase carbs. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I'm 11 weeks post RNY tomorrow. I've noticed that I'm developing a taste or a craving for carbs. I've been eating lots of fresh berries and melons and the luscious in season cherries but I'm starting to crave the bad carbs (mashed potatoes, Pasta, tortilla chips, etc). I rarely have an appetite but was wondering if others had this or any cravings. With meals I eat Protein first then veggies or fruit and get full before having a starch. 20. What Protein shake are you using? I'm 3 months post-op and still drink one Protein Shake a day. I used Shaklee pre-op found it chalky. Nurse gave me a sample of unjury which mixes beautifully but find it a bit sweet. I'm currently using Inspire Caramel Latte mixed with coffee and 1% milk but I'm getting bored with it.... Coke zero

I agree with pammieanne and wolfgirl78. Think we all had to do some real soul searching before we made our life changing decisions. I'm not a soda/pop drinker so it's not an issue with me. I did give up drinking alcohol 2 months pre-op and that has been difficult but very manageable. I'm in this for health. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Home!

I'm going to my 3 month post-op appointment next week. I vaguely remember the first weeks of special foods and diets. I am able to eat most everything on eligible food lists. I love being able to have a taste (bite) of well seasoned and flavorful foods. This was so much worth it. Can't wait to tell the Psychiatrist (psych Eval) that I am happy! He said surgery wouldn't make me happy!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My new beginning is OVER [emoji22]

My insurance "approved" surgery and it was covered. However, my deductibles are high and my insurance covers 90%. I've already paid about $3,000 out of pocket. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Surgery Date was 6/27-6 Days Out

I had RNY Apr-13. No pain and didn't experience gas and I did not have a drain. I did feel terribly uncomfortable trying to get Protein drinks in. But that is all in the past. My only complaint is I feel like I should have more energy since I've lost 38lbs since procedure. I haven't been able to do lots of walking (excise choice) since I have a very painful sciatica (going to PT). My surgeon and primary tells me I need to be patient up to 6 months post-op for energy to increase. I'm so happy I made this choice!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. I only told a few close friends and a few family members prior to surgery. Once it was over I told my remaining family (siblings). They have all been extremely supportive. It's funny because I've lost over 50lbs and when I encounter friends I haven't seen in awhile, there is no mention of a weight loss. Did they not notice or are they not saying anything? Which is frustrating but then I don't need to explain. For the majority of friends I will say that I've made a life style change (which is the truth). However, if I have dinner or lunch with friends, it's pretty evident that I'm simply not eating much. Of course, I'm not drinking either but I did have a liver issue (fatty liver) so I've quit due to a high enzyme issue. So, I've decided to play it situation by situation.
