  1. My surgery is on June 3rd. I started my diet this past Friday and gosh it is so hard at times. Food has been my comfort and my friend for so long this is a challange. But I am also struggling so bad because I have been a smoker for years and having to give them up has been nearly impossilbe. Has anyone else had to give up these two things at the same time? How bad does it hurt if I cheat every couple of days and have a smoke?

If you smoke, you are at risk of having your surgery cancelled. I can't imagine how hard it is to quit smoking and try eating healthy at the same time - but you've got to stay strong and not cave in. What's more important - smoking or having surgery?

Oh KristenLe, I am trying my best because knowing that I am going to have this surgery is giving me hope to keep going. I just don't know why it is necessary to stop completely, because every day smokers are going through life or death surgeries without having a chance to stop smoking at all. I understand how unhealthy it is, that is why I do want to stop, and I am doing unbelievably well to go from smoking 1 1/2 packs a day to practically none. I shouldn't have to worry about being turned down to have the surgery if do give in to the additional a time or two.

Nicotine effects blood flow and healing. There's a greater risk of complications - especially with major surgery (and requiring healing). I know it sucks - but you having a successful surgery is important. Hang in there! I know it won't help - but have a sugar free popsicle instead of a cigarette.
