Getting Family Support for surgery in Mexico
jban0307 replied to nerd_is_inferred's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Yeah, I am in the opposite kind of, ha-ha! My husband is ALL about me doing it. He knows I have been thinking this over for about a year, But the the family I have told, are the ones who seems so scared for me and don't really understand. I am in Marietta, Chattanooga isn't too far way! My MIL is from Chattaboogie! I know Marietta very well! I grew up in Kennesaw! I'm there all the time, my parents and my sisters family all still live there! Small world! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

I went to Dollywood several years ago with my husband. We got on one ride that I just couldn't lower the lap bar on so that it would click into place. After everyone else was locked in and ready to go, here I was still struggling. There were 3 people working that ride at the time, and all 3 gathered around me to make the lap bar lock in. All this while people waited and watched. Then, to my horror, the worker lady says to me "honey, I need you to lift up your belly, it's getting in the way". I was absolutely mortified. I told her to just let me up, and I literally ran down the ramp crying, and all the way to the bathrooms, leaving my hubby behind. We left immediately and I haven't set foot in another amusement park since. My surgery is at the end of July, and I can't wait until I'm able to take my 3 year old to Six Flags and ride the rides with her. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Getting Family Support for surgery in Mexico
jban0307 replied to nerd_is_inferred's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I'm scheduled for July 29 in Tijuana. I'm lucky that most of my family is very supportive of my decision. My husband, however, is very much not. He's got a large and in charge personality and he's convinced that if I drink a cup of Metamucil before every meal, I'll accomplish the same effect that the surgery has. I have tried until I'm blue in the face to explain why that won't work for me but he won't hear it. So, after a year of him telling me to wait, I took matters into my own hands and booked surgery in Mexico. I am very excited about it, and my amazing mom will be coming with me. She didn't even hesitate to say yes when I approached her about coming. I'm so lucky to have that, because even though I'm excited about it, it's a topic that can't be discussed at home without a fuss. I'm confident he'll change his mind though as I get smaller and smaller. He may even be a future patient of Dr Illan too, he just doesn't know it yet P.S. Where in GA are you? I live in Chattanooga now but I'll always be a GA girl -

Are Your Family Members Overweight and Which of Them Supported You?
jban0307 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Mom and Dad are both overweight, brother and sister are both healthy and in shape. My aunt on my dads side had gastric bypass 10 years ago and has recently started gaining back a little. I have 2 cousins (her daughters) that have been sleeved and are both doing fantastic. Everyone- family, friends, coworkers- are extremely supportive of my decision to get WLS, except for my husband. It's a financial thing to him, and he doesn't think it will work. He hasn't said that, but I can read between the lines. He kept promising to pay for it if I jumped through all these hoops. See a doctor, check. Talk to a nutritionist, check. Get a personal trainer, check. Try everything else first, check check check (since I was 16). Now he's still giving me the run around a year later and I've decided to take matters into my own hands. I'm going to Mexico and he is NOT happy. I wish he was onboard to share in my excitement, but I gotta help myself here. I'm so grateful for the support from the rest of my family though. After reading these responses, it appears not everyone is so lucky. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
