I found BariatricPal after searching for answers, I have never really looked at Bariatric surgery as an option and I used to tell jokes (I have done stand up comedy and I am currently a comedic writer) about how it was purely for lazy rich people as an easy way out. About 7 years ago I really started to pack on some pounds and I acquired some health problem to go with the extra weight, things like sleep apnea, arthritis, and depression (bad combo for weight loss). As time went by I stopped being able to do the things that I enjoy doing and just plain being an active person, my energy was gone. For the last 6 years I have had multiple surgeries and every surgeon and doctor has mentioned for me to look into Bariatric surgery, I am a proud (sometimes to stupidity) woman and tried many diets and failed, I would loose 10 pounds and gain the 10 back along with 5 of their closest friends, I started only really being able to shop at Lane Bryant for clothing, I even lost a good job because I was not perceived to be able to do the work do to my size (manager was a jerk and I had no problem selling the products). In April of 2016 I sat down with my Primary care doctor and we had a talk, I explained that I can't keep on going like this, every time I lose a pound I gain it and more back, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. I showed him my food logs and everything I had eaten since January 1, 2016, he quietly look at my log and thought to himself for a minute then looked deep into my eyes (he has amazing eyes) and said the magic words "I think it is time we look into surgical options." I knew nothing about surgery and since I prefer to be an over achiever I started researching, I searched medical journals, websites, support networks, I went to multiple free seminars and on May 17, 2016 I made the choice to start this journey.
My husband is supportive and I have very few friends that I have told about it, I have 3 levels of trust: Level 1 are the ones closest to me who are supportive and excited, Level 2 are the ones who know that I am having a stomach surgery but not much else (I have Gastritis so the story is believable) but they would judge and tell me to just eat less and work out more, and Level 3 those are the people that I choose not to talk to do to but still I occasionally run into if they ask I will simply say diet and exercise maybe I will mention something strange to throw them off like I started using Preparation H as an "All Over" body cream since it is known to shrink things.
I am ready for my life to begin, I am ready to join the Losers Bench, I am ready to join the ranks of those I used to write jokes about. I don't know if I will ever be able to be completely open about surgery with people as I prefer to be somewhat of a private person, but I do know that I am ready for this.
